If we are going back to the gilded age with robber barons and child labor and zero regulations on food safety and other things.

Can we at least get cocaine back in the soft drinks?

wakko 103 points 5 months ago

Just remember - we'll get out of this the same way we got out of it the last time.

We'll do it just as soon as enough folks realize last time wasn't resolved peacefully.

The saddest thing, and excuse me if I’m sounding blunt or flippant. But as I shake my head, what low levels of ok’ness so many American people have been conditioned & duped into believing that “as long as I’m not bothered” then it’s all good mentality. Given the current & recent optics, gas prices are getting some a little worked up about stuff. But sadly I digress.

I think that might be the human condition in general, and why huge problems like climate change and economic collapse keep happening (almost) everywhere.

America has the problem all conqueror cultures have - they exist only as long as there are things to conquer.

The history of itself that America tells itself is a long series of self-serving revisionist narratives about how we're justified in our unjustifiable actions. White Americans tell themselves its totally okay to appropriate from other cultures what is lacking in their own. Whiteness is not a cultural identity and that inherent hollowness produces what we see around us. There is no community of whites like there is community within the cultures the white identity seeks to oppress (while admiring and stealing from). If left unchecked, white supremacist identity seeks to stamp out the oppressed they've exploited (then tell themselves all of that stolen culture was rightfully theirs all along).

The whole "bootstraps" culture is a community-destroying myth that Americans have perpetrated upon themselves solely to keep rich pedophiles in power.

and they have no ability to do anything about it. how exactly is your average working person going to change gas prices? best they can do is try to drive less.

If last time's violence was so great, why did we still get this time? And every other time before that where violence bought a reprieve during which evil was given every advantage to regain what it lost and more? It has never solved anything for longer than a generation, and even then deals were being made in secret to preserve the evil, by the very champions of "good".

Because people stopped doing violence and said “violence is wrong, we can resolve the system through the system” except the system was captured by the rulers.

No solution is permanent. And violence isn't technically the fix either.

The problem is you can't solve certain problems from within the broken system. It's possible to go outside the system but without violence but it's rare. The violence is what enables outside system fixes to be possible and those have been of varied quality.

It's not what we do when we're violent, it's what we do immediately afterwards that matters.

Nonviolence often just means you don't get to make any meaningful changes at all, because they aren't going to just let you vote them out of power and into to jail.

Violence is that system.

Thanks. It's a lonely life sometimes.

The violence is what enables outside system fixes to be possible and those have been of varied quality.

To me it's rather that the would-be fixers have just been tricked into thinking this violence is the solution when it's not, causing their efforts to be short circuited. They might seem to get somewhere, but only far enough to satisfy their sense of victory or tire their whole generation out. Then the system which was never really beaten to begin with slides right back into our lives, putting the lie to the idea that violence was ever a useful solution.

I mean peaceful solutions seem to have the same problem. It'll seem like it works for awhile and then later generations realize that that issue was never really resolved. Just look at the civil rights movement. Supposedly solved 'peacefully' by MLK, but as we've all come to learn, the only thing that happened was that racists just grew quiet for awhile and waited for a chance to be racists again.

There is no system you can set up that will not eventually become corrupt or compromised. Even the word "revolution" suggests its cyclical nature. It must periodically happen.

I agree. I then surmise that earnest efforts to avoid periodic systemic violence are the doings of the portion of humanity which is both capable of utilizing their prefrontal cortex, and have had occasion to develop it. They are a minority, a condition partly reinforced by said periodic violence. We need more time - time enough to evolve out of it before we render the Earth uninhabitable.

Idk if it's indicative of ADHD, but i know that many neurodivergent people report a unique, or even paradoxical relationship with stimulants (myself included, obviously).

However, standard disclaimers apply: this is anecdotal evidence, I'm not a doctor, and definitely not your doctor. Check with them, there are usually quick easy screeners available to see if further evaluation is recommended.

This is sensationalism. Are people actually getting sick or hurt? One or two deaths is really not worth worrying about in the scheme of things. I'm more worried when over regulation means we can't have drugs or new drugs are delayed. It's just harder to point out the deaths from the lack of a drug than from the presence of something bad.

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
