Battle.net's discord permissions

I'm sure there are perfectly valid reasons for them to take full control of our discord accounts and this won't be abused.
Right? This is Mussolini trying to get admin permissions on the third Reich. I don't have a dog in this one.
The intent is almost strictly for WoW, discord is advertising that it's to allow for merging of WoW clan chat and discord messages, I would assume via the discord client which is why it asks for so many intents. Screw that regardless though.
presume the plan is for the battle net app to act as a pseudo discord app and let you control everything on your discord account through it.
Yeah, to me that sounds like what's going on. They're trying to implement a Discord client within their game, and to really do that successfully, it needs permissions to do all the Discord things.
I would do anything for battle dot net, but I won't do that
They profiled you based on your activity and algorithmically decided you probably weren't a kid
Same aura as: "I'm white so they wount do anything to me"
Good luck getting people to move
Hasn't happened to me yet do i don't care
It likely already has, IIRC they assume age based on message content and account history, even if you haven't explicitly given them a birthdate
I did also use that command in the browser that claimed to autoverify you for the age check.
What do you mean, this is to improve user experience!
Maybe this time [no cake] is the lie. I'm willing to bet a cake on the outcome

I mean, it's trying to integrate itself into Discord at a high level, so much so that you can see if a friend is online to send them an invite or message without needing to open the app.
The only odd thing is to join servers in your behalf, but if you wanted to join a server without opening Discord directly, wouldn't it need that permission?
This doesn't seem that egregious, and the long list is quite informative of exactly what it can do.
Join servers on your behalf would be required to do something like "Join the World of Warcraft community server" or "join your guild's Discord server" buttons. Theoretically permanent links could work here, but Discord has made permanent linking harder to do for legitimate reasons, and it wouldn't work for smaller servers.
Email and third-party connections seem questionable. Why should Blizzard need to know my Discord account's email?
email would be to associate the account with an email. most services do this.
Yeah, why is this even mildly infuriating? If anything, it's good to see transparency like this.
It's not saying the program will do any of those things without your input. It's just letting you know that your input in one program is using another programs data.
No, rich presence is some sort of status that any app can change and says "hey i am playing XYZ, i am in the lobby etc etc" can't do anything else
On one hand, it could be useful with the likes of WoW to have a better chat app with guild servers and rooms. I think many players are already there. Blizz adapts to what is still hot.
But on the other, one's personal discord account can hold a bit more value than an addon to BattleNet, it may have it's secrets, even in the list of servers you joined, and it probably have friends not interested in that at all. I'd probably create a new acc if I need one for that purpose.
I am surprised Discord didn't do something to sandbox Blizzard's integration. Like creating a user who have access to these and those servers with these permissions. Probably they didn't thought about that, but it could've made integrations more safe and viable.
Integrations can be made by anyone and discord moderate only abuses IIRC so they won't bother with it and it's probably in their interests too
Man...
When Discord tightens the screws, it is going to be pain in a lot of communities.
Like, technically these permissions make sense now, but some day they will bite users in the butt.
What are the third party connections? This could literally be anything.
IIRC this means that the Battle.net app would be able to see the details of a connected Twitch account, for example. I think I've seen this used in certain situations for things like account management apps or in a few servers that want to verify the identity of people, e.g. creator communities.
Til battle.net still exists and didn't die with wc3.
Why are some of them duplicated?
the scrolling screenshot function on my phone is... imperfect
Not enough cake
Gotta water down the TOS list to the point where reading it will take a year. /s
at least the cake isn't a lie this time
Discord malware needs fewer permissions than this /s
Just wait until battle[.]net gets pwded
Youre getting downvoted but Blizzard really has gone into the shitter since... Uhh... Wrath of the Lich King? Maybe like 2 weeks into Overwatch?
mods help i'm being cyberbullied :(
Internet 3 is growing hungry.
At this point why wonβt they just create an AI that mimics me across multiple social media platforms? If theyβre stealing my data they should at least do the honors of posting for me
i actually exported my discord messages last year to do this for myself locally but it was too much effort
honestly I see only reasonable requests (plus selling your data if you didn't check that off). These look all like needed features to interact with friends between battle net and discord, they're a lot because discord made them "granular"
Guess how they can allow you to do that from battle net
And with those permissions they can also do it themselves whenever they see fit from their systems without asking you about it or informing you about it.
Mind you, the really juicy stuff that can be used to make money from is all the information about anything and everything you might be doing in Discord which can be sold to, amongst others, advertisers, rather than the active management stuff.
Somebody in Blizzard activelly decided that merelly letting you post in and read posts from Discord via Battle.Net wasn't enough and it's pretty valid to wonder if the decision path was "let's do a full Discord client in Battle.Net to make it even better for our customers and for that we need permissions for just about everything in Discord" or "let's get access to information about just about everything our customers do in Discord and we need to make a full Discord client in Battle.net to justify that".
I know that the answer I would bet on 2 decades ago before the enshittification era isn't the same I would bet on now.
You can just not connect the two.
If you're connecting them I suppose you want to use discord through battle net, so these permissions are needed.
As for the advertising stuff, go through discord and battle net and disable everything you can. BattleNet is not selling anything discord isn't already selling.

Can you do all of those on a battle net account? I would, in good faith, presume the plan is for the battle net app to act as a pseudo discord app and let you control everything on your discord account through it.
PS: I searched very hard for that good faith.
Edit: Know what? Discord ain't exactly known for its ethical behaviour, so fuck em.
