Calling Collect

Opening for the Matrix. Sitting in a packed theater. Phone rings, Trinity dashes for it, picks up the line and the truck smashes through the booth.

Theater was dead silent, everyone was in awe.

I called out damn, should have used *69 got a decent uproar of laughter.

(iykyk, iydk, *69 on a landline used to call back the last person that called you. It was all over commercials.)

I also have theatre joke story.

Opening for Jurassic Park. Packed theatre too. Triceratops is sick scene where they go to look at the droppings.

This scene comes up:

My younger brother who was probably 6 or 7 yells out "That's even bigger than mine!" and the whole theatre bursts out laughing!

Lol, kids are funny like that. I went to a museum this weekend. It was kinda boring for the kids, but the tour guide tried to include them as much as possible. At one point, this kid also made a funny comment, I can't recall it,but it's funny in how genuine it was.

Similar experience: Watching The Matrix in theatre. Neo and Agent Smith face off in the subway.

Right as the newspaper blows by, someone let out an absolutely perfect Ennio Morricone whistle from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Legitimately impressive whistling skills, great volume, perfect pitch. Got a huge laugh.

Watching LotR in a packed theater, get to the part where Frodo gets just speared in the back by that bigass spider. I wasn’t prepared for that fatality so I let out an involuntary mini-laugh/snort. Guy directly behind me, as loud as he can, screams “Shut the fuck up!” directly into my ear. Murmurs of agreement all around.

Dude just basically assaulted a kid who was quiet the whole rest of the movie, but OK.

Pet Semetary, 1989, packed theater. During the scene where the resurrected toddler is chasing Fred Gwynne with a scalpel, a baby suddenly cries out in the back of the theater. The entire audience jumped then burst out in laughter.

Who brings a baby to a Stephen King movie?

I have a couple theater stories:

1986, The Fly. Movie starts, title sequence comes up, "The Fly". Guy in the back of the theater lets out a huge, throaty "YEEAAHH!". Whole theater cracks up.

1996, Independence Day opening day (July 4). Audience is totally engrossed, edge of their seats. The explosion is racing through the tunnel, the dog jumps through the door just in time, and screen goes black: "July 3". Audience goes fucking APESHIT, the highest energy I've ever felt in a crowd in my life.

Isn't The Matrix just an allegory about being transgender?

Fully intentional:

The Matrix films are about being transgender, the trilogy's co-director says.

"That was the original intention but the world wasn't quite ready," says Lilly Wachowski, who came out as trans along with her sister Lana after the films came out.

https://www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-53692435

path: 0 25343530 25343666 25345909, hotness: undefined, score: 1, children: 5
cannedtuna 9 points 3 days ago

Except:

Speaking with Them: Wachowski clarifies her previous comments, explaining that The Matrix was not intended to be a trans allegory when it was in production. While she acknowledges the movie’s strong trans themes, she says the ideas came about naturally, without intention on her or co-director Lana Wachowski’s part. Check out what Wachowski had to say below:

No, I didn’t [confirm The Matrix is a trans allegory].

Yeah, so that came from an interview I did for Disclosure. They had a bunch of Matrix questions. And the question they asked me was about Switch, who was originally written as a trans character who was male in the real world and female in the matrix. And they took that response and attached the question that everyone now references that it’s a trans allegory. And so it was slightly out of context, but I don’t sit here and put a stink up about it, because it is a trans allegory in that it was written by two closeted trans women. And so all of the things that are in it are super-duper trans. The idea of transformation, even the whole “My name is Neo, Mr. Anderson —” that idea of claiming identity, it’s undeniable.

Yeah, with all the decisions we made with that film, there’s just this burbling transness simmering below everything. So when I look back at the way that we cast those two parts, I can see how obvious it is that they’re one part in a lot of ways; that they’re two sides of the same coin. It’s not like these were conscious decisions, but more like we’re finding our way instinctively as these two closeted trans women. So all those things that your receptors are buzzing about are completely valid. When people say, “Oh, it’s a trans allegory,” it’s like, “Yeah… it is, but we weren’t like, Hey, let’s write a trans allegory.” That’s not how it started. We were like, “Hey, let’s write this action film,” and then we got our trans all over it. [laughs]

Whatever, it's a better retcon than everything J.K.Rowling said about Harry Potter.

The Matrix having a bunch of trans themes > Dumbledore having a throbbing gay sex backstory and the 1 jewish student being named Goldstein.

The Matrix actually supports those themes and readings within the work.

No, there was reading material attached to the script and it was mostly metaphysical and philosophy. Not sure the watchowskis actually understood what they wrote by the end of 3, they maintained it wasn't ALL the matrix even though that seems to be what they wrote and fits with the books they pulled inspiration from

Even most landlines today just relay to a fully digitalized VoIP infrastructure. The new stuff is just way more economical to run, even if the residences still run kilometers of old copper wire, the hubs have changed to microwave antennas or satellite uplinks, as they are much cheaper to maintain.

Cheaper and a lot more flexible. If you abstract the actual call into packets sent over the internet, you can make use of routing and redundant links that are already in place, or easier to build.
