The book I borrowed and was reading became unavailable in the US *while I was reading it*

i was about to say this is a job for anna's-archive.
im so happy to find someone else already linked it because i came in here ready to drop a link lol.
I love how that's just a normal thing to do here. One of the first green flags I ever got about this site
Exhibit A for "If buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing."
To be totally fair, they didn't buy this book, they borrowed it. Still a good reason to use other libraries
Well, true. But it sounds like the library didn't own the book either, all things considered.
Piracy is a service problem.
I'm not advocating for piracy, but they're doing it to themselves.
Honestly I just want to bitcoin/zelle/venmo/whatever the author a little money for his awesome book and shortcut everything
His website does have a contact form if you want to reach out to him https://www.edwardashton.com/
This is why I just pirate whatever music I want, then go to shows and hand the musicians cash. Never gotten a bad reaction, everybody wins this way.
Yes, pirating to cut all the middle leeches then sending the artist money directly seems like the most sensible way to me.
I'm not advocating for piracy
I am. Don't put up with bullshit like this, just pirate the damn thing.
Super easy way to solve that problem:

Side note: you know what is fucking wild about bibles? It's an amalgamation of some really, really old shit, and despite that, there are numerous copyrighted versions. King James is not one of them, but there are a lot.
They get around being Public Domain by virtue of being "novel translations", but when you see the differences between them, it seems like largely bullshit.
I had that exact problem with Netflix, now I have Jellyfin
Jellyfin?
Kodi?
From what I understand, no it doesn't. You still need a personal library for it to work. With Nuvio, you don't need anything at all. Just pick a show/movie you want to watch, and watch it.
With Jellyfin, you have to take the time to rip your discs (or pirate them), then add them to your Jellyfin library. There is no such issue with Nuvio. It's basically Netflix + Prime + Disney + HBO + Peacock + Crunchyroll + everything else combined into a single app. No "personal library" required.
You point jellyfin at a folder with media, and press a button. Ideally you separate them into tv and movies, but you can absolutely just lazily point and shoot.
General improvements upon stremio in various aspects. Stremio's Android TV app just constantly crashes or fails to get sources for me, so I switched.
This one has stuff like separate profiles w/pin passwords, (imo) nicer and faster UI, and has integrations like aniskip.
It also can directly use stremio's addons and there are ways to import your watch history, addons and libraries, so it is super easy to migrate
You're welcome.
Shadow Library Uptime Monitor (SLUM)
Tracking public availability status for shadow library services
When libgen went down and I wanted to keep reading the uncle festers guides, I came across this one.
Doesn't seem to be accurate, I can only reach the first zlibrary link. It may be my ISP 🤷♂️. Very cool project though.
Very cool project though.
I thank the person or people who's created it too.
I have no part in the creation or ownership of that site. I have no idea who created or owns the site.
I just spread the site whenever I have the opportunity.
Wait. @Mickey7@lemmy.world the c/shitpost grandpa?
Who knew he had a biography
Yeah I'm gonna guess it's based on whatever service you are using losing distribution rights to it, because the book is available in the US pretty much everywhere.
My local library 😪
Ohhh don't tell anyone but I get all my ebooks from my cities library with Calibre. There's an extension you can add that removes the drm (afaicr it was made by the same guy that created drm) and now you have the full ebook.
I know ;)
I still want to give the author money for an excellent book though. I'll find a way to buy it.
They’re showing a UK edition. British books arent generally available in the US or vice versa when a domestic edition is available.
That's the original US book version. The UK version is white and yellow.

Note the pull quote at the top is attributed to The Times. This is the current UK edition cover.
Why we have to sail the high seas.
I have dropped a book into the bath. Strictly speaking it wasn't unavailable, but it was unreadable.
But at least it was your own fault. Much easier to forgive yourself than a global kafkaesque system of greed-driven bureaucracy.
Yes. Bezos didn't slap the book out of my hand into the water, and threaten to remove my entire bookshelf.
No kidding, at least from OPs title they were only borrowing and hadn’t purchased it. If a company did that to me after I bought a book I’d be skipping my merry way to Z-Library and never touching that company again :)
It's actually pretty awesome.
This is the central problem with digital ownership. It isn't real. You don't own anything.
If you have a file which contains the book and has no Digital Restrictions Management on it then you own the book in the same way as if you have the physical book.
If you borrow a book from the library you could make a copy by scanning all the pages and then give the original back. Alternatively you could refuse to return it and pay the replacement cost. In either case you actually had the book with full access.
If you "borrow" the book in apps like this you are not getting the whole thing unencumbered, you are getting something more similar to a webcam view of a page turning robot. Yes you can read the text, but you can't make any changes, mark a spot, read it offline, take a photocopy, and so on. Many of these apps block screenshots, and many also block copy and paste.
It is crazy to me that in order to have reasonable access to a book you have no legal option in many cases. I recently bought Azalea Ellis' books and they are all in a plain eBook format or in a plain audio book format. No DRM, no limits. That means I can use the audio book as I want, which in my case means adding it to my AudioBookShelf server. I can cache it to my phone one book at a time or even the whole series in one go. I can play it at whatever speed I like, 2x is my normal, and nobody can stop me. I can listen to it as many times as I like.
If nobody will sell me the book without DRM I don't consider it buying. They are leasing the book, renting access to it, but I never fool myself into thinking I own it. I don't actually own anything on a PS5, nor on Steam. While Steam has not turned evil yet it is always a possibility, so I treat those licences as access rentals and assume they are temporary.
From a moral perspective if you van have it taken away you don't own it, and if you buying isn't owning then piracy isn't theft. Any claims that someone stole from a publisher when the publisher was claiming they were selling the game are bunk. If they actually sold the game, as GOG does, then it would be theft. But if they only sell a licence for access then it isn't selling the game, and it is therefore not theft.
Okay, now if you could explain it to my "But no, they're on my Google account" sister, and preferably before she loses interest and starts talking about something else...
Is there any chance it's showing as unavailable because they've renamed it to Mickey 17? I'm sure you've checked that, but just in case...
The book is still Mickey7. The movie they released based on it is Mickey 17.
Oh yeah, I know - I just meant that someone might have (erroneously) changed it in the backend of whatever site that is. Was always a long shot though.
You do know that the people in charge of America currently, may never have read a book.
I am confused what that has to do with this at all??
It's someone's alt created three years ago, probably getting dusted off for the midterms.
For myself, I've blocked it. I don't need that intrusive political shit.
... I had not. But no.
Ah well, that sucks. Sorry, hope you can find a way to read it again 👍
They were reading a UK edition, which has never been available in the US.
We need to talk about the 10 missing Mickeys.
They're all dead, nobody cares. It's the central plot of the book.
Kavita
It's software for hosting your eBooks. I have it on my Debian server and can grab it from any device with a browser. (on network or tunneling in).
Wasn't aware of calibre's network capabilities so I can't say.

Still works for me. But I also posted the shadow library uptime monitor site, which contains all the free library sites that are up and running in real time. So if the link I posted no longer works you're welcome to try one of the other free libraries:

I’m not necessarily against the gradual removal of physical media, and that’s not because I’m defending Sony or anything like that. We’ve been downloading games digitally for decades, and physical media has increasingly gone the way of the DVD. That transition itself doesn’t really bother me.
That said, I absolutely agree that what they’re doing here is bullshit, and physical media is objectively more consumer-friendly in a lot of ways. I’m just saying I understand the argument from a different perspective.
Because when it comes to books, I’m exactly the opposite.
I want an actual physical book. Paper pages, a cover, the whole thing. I’ve tried reading digitally, and I just can’t get into it. Something about reading a book on a screen feels completely wrong to me.
So I guess I understand the attachment to physical media more than I initially thought. I just happen to draw the line in a very different place.
🏴☠️ to the high seas my friends!
Makes you wonder what they didn't want you to see. Guess you'll never know now. They probably already removed the juicy bits.
