I made a seed screening and winnowing device for my soybeans

Seeing this as an IT guy is more science fiction to me than Star Trek

It's not too complicated. You use a wire mesh to sieve the seeds to separate the ones you want from the ones you don't. Beans are big, but grass seeds are small. I need to do a lot, so I made a big thing for it. I made it spin so I can do more in one batch. The small stuff drops out and a fan below the main part blows away the chaff by using the "wind" which is called "winnowing".

Imagine setting your iptables to only accept a certain ip4 range to exclude countries which tend to probe servers. Then you blow away small port access requests you don't want which you have tunnelled to larger numbers e.g. reject 22 and accept 6622.

Nature’s the only thing that doesn’t throw a shit fit when their branch gets moved.

I had a Corn kernel burning stove (similar to a wood pellet stove, but less mess). I had a screen on a 45 angle. Out a recycle bin at the bottom, pour the corn at the top, as it slides down all the dust, tiny stones and chaff fall through the screen and corn slides to the bottom into the bin

How could soybeans use this contraption without any arms and hands?

My arm moves that way. The wood is cut. We are both happy with this arrangement.

That's what those are called! I always see them on wood working channels and most of the time if they're specifically mentioned at all it's just "Hand Saw" lol. Thanks!

More efficient than western hand saws in similar contexts in my experience.

Thanks. Most of the time was making a decent pillow block when I didn't have the right metric drill for my bearings.

Seed shakers are a thing. Dont forget that plenty of rocks are the same size as soy beans. Don't want to blow a tooth.

Yes, and I would love to have one. This cost me only parts from the shed.

The rocks are pretty easy to remove during the soaking step.

This took me a long time to get. Not because I haven't joked about it looking like a bingo tumbler but because B27 is not a valid bingo number.

This is super cool!

Do you throw the pods in dried & whole or do they need breaking up first? Are you growing these for personal food, and if so, what size of plot do you usually cultivate them on?

path: 0 26130901, hotness: undefined, score: 3, children: 1
dialectalraveling 8 points 17 days ago

Most of the pods were removed.

I bought a half ton from my partner's family. Their plot is like 40 acres, but everybody around grows them too. These are the sweepings from the bottom of the grain silo after they ship the bulk to asia. Hence, they are a bit dirtier and need winnowed again.

I make and sell soy sauce, miso, tofu, and vegan meats among other things.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:
