The problem is that Reddit NSFW is an extremely broad category that doesn't only include porn. So many posts and memes are tagged with it. Realizing that I'm now seeing a censored, inauthentic version of Reddit made me delete the app.

Even if you do, RedLib let's you access all that without any ads, trackers, or signing in.
Better really, really late than never.
Not only are they not necessary, they're actually harmful to existence. Admittedly I use YouTube somewhat through privacy front ends, but quitting all the others has been great for my health. Using nebula has also minimised my use of YouTube.
Peertube is probably the closest. I don't really use either, but I've understood that peertube is a bit lacking in content.
As you're here on lemmy.ml, I doubt it, but if you happen to be a "cryptocurrency enthusiast", then odysee might also be an option, though I'm not sure hiw much of it is open-source.
odyssey (keep in mind, no 1-1 alternative for youtube exists, yet)
YouTube is problematic because it isn't really the platform that is valuable, it is the content creators.
A more appropriate alternative to it is GrayJay app, which tries to remove YouTube monopoly by supporting multiple platforms. If enough people would use that, content creators could really migrate from one platform to another.
This is my dream but content creators want the mist exposure so they go to yt which is understandable. I just wished they also uploaded their stuff to multiple platforms. Though knowing how evil google is they probably have some bs no monetization if not exclusive to their platform policy or some garbage
If longform video is your thing, I would highly suggest Nebula. I've paid £27.30 for a years subscription. Creators say they get paid fairly and can make content without censorship. It has been exactly what I'm into.
YouTube is the only one left for me as well and I’ve been considering Nebula myself. One thing I do try to avoid though is all of the rage bait stuff. I actively filter it out and focus only on videos that teach me things. So a lot of science, food, carpentry, and other crafty kind of channels and videos. Oh, and a lot of animal ones.
I love nebula for a lot of the topics you listed, highly recommend it!
Why would you pay for a YouTube replacement with far less content? Just use an ad-blocker, sponsor blocker or a private frontend. Maybe even torrent-tube if your into that kind of thing.
"They already have all my data anyway"
The same people when I was trying to warn them in like 2012 - "They don't want my data, I'm not that interesting"
A guy was saying to me how much he likes it. I said they sell your data, track your typing, create a profile and use you to sell you stuff etf.
He says yeah, I love that! It makes my life so much easier and I don't care about being sold stuff I probably want.
Idk what to say to that.
It’s true. There’s a whole chunk of mainstream users that won’t think twice about it. I don’t blame them though. Most people aren’t educated on the negatives and our government and tech oligarchs aren’t about to teach them. I work in tech and am terminally online, so I’m acutely aware of this stuff.
Even people who are don't seam to care. One of my local revolutionary socialist org's still uses WhatsApp for there general communication. I think it takes a special kind of nerdyness and neurodivergence.
If you absolutely have to scan a face, apparently this works: nofacescan.app
didnt work for me
thank god we can still scan our face for lemmy
hey it's big dan halfbyte
The only pic anyone gets of me is my dick pic.
yeah doesnt everybody have to send the mods one every few weeks??
Uh. I had a very lovely chat with someone, then I looked at their profile and saw many different angles of their dick. I was hoping to discover new subs and I discovered their dick instead. I’m not checking out your profile.
But the president is a pedofile protector, it doesn't make any sense!
Lol yes, just wanted to bring the same energy from that Simpsons lady.
Because we have reached some sort of critical mass of ad blocking and anonymization online, enough that it's starting to hurt the bottom line, so they need a solid way to track people for that shit.
Also, the US is currently being run by a rabid pack of puritan Christo fascists, ie Project 2025. Right now it's "protect the children", but ultimately the idea is to track and sensor and "reeducate" people.
"Oh, you search for 'signs I am gay'? Better report to God Camp."
Don't even think about trying to be anything that does not fit in the box.
They want to be able to link web fingerprints to childre n so they can target and exploit them.
too late i just scanned my whole body into club penguin
Meanwhile their CEO loves republicans and supports fascist influencers through money and by meeting up with them for videos.
Fuck Proton.
Sadly if you want to travel these days face scans are unavoidable. I still avoid them for commercial services, but yeah. Fly to europe or any major US city and you are going to be made to submit to a face scan to get through security.
The last time I went through TSA (earlier this year), I no longer saw the signs saying you could opt-out, but I was still able to opt out.
The TSA agent got annoyed at me for not leading with that, though. Like... buddy... We exchanged greetings, and then I said no thank you to the face scan. It's not my fault that you jumped the gun. I'm trying to not be rude about another unnecessary invasion of privacy.
Some of them they don't even ask anymore. When you enter the US at certain ports of entry now they scan everyone as you walk up and they won't even ask to see your passport because they know who you are and will just wave you through. Because that's not fucking creepy at all.
Yes, but at the very LEAST, it's being done by a government controlled entity that's subject to data security auditing and some sort of regulated process for handling that data.
These social media services are going to hold on to those scans, sell them for advertising data, and store them on dubiously secured servers.
Oh for sure I just wouldn't want anyone having my face scan personally. I'd love to have a law passed that designated biometric data as personal property requiring a warrant or explicit consent to collect.
Sadly, that government body pays private companies (palantier, cough cough) on the back end. They combine the data with a gazillion other datasets paid for by taxpayers. Since this is what they call "model training" you can't unring that bell from that point on. Immutable data on an evil corporation's dataset, for as long as data can be stored.
without telling me you’re from the US.
I... mentioned the US in my comment?
Well I can't speak to what its like in places I've never been.
Are Americans the only non-EU nationals that have to go through EES biometrics when traveling into EU/Schengen zone? I'm pretty sure that's not the case.
Now, I wouldn't be surprised if many Americans don't know we've been doing this to non-US nationals visiting the US for years via our US-VISIT program.
Americans are the only ones who fly to American cities without getting scanned... Because it's an internal flight.
I don't think there's a corner left in the industrialized world where you can go through passport control at the airport without getting your face scanned. At least as a foreigner.
I've always obsessively kept my photos off any cloud provider for years only to discover that the entire rest of the family have a treasure trove of fully tagged pictures of me uploaded to every major provider out there. In most cases I think it even ties the tag to my phone/email/birthday entry in their Contacts list.
Always wondered about this, if they receive a GDPR request from you do they have to delete others tagged pictures of you and your contact details? I mean it is your personal data technically.
Yeah, they do. AIUI there's some nuance about what constitutes "legitimate interest" so it's possible (probable in fact) they might only delete pictures where you're the main subject but not e.g. group photos from events
Policy goes into effect end of the month.
Instagram banned me when i started using a VPN and i never looked back, delete your account
However: none of my friends contact me now that i dont use META
Why would you be so stupid to scan your face?
Would you rob a bank too, if they asked you to? Because that's what you'll have done if your biometrical data gets sold into the wrong hands.
Don't pay for a VPN using your bank or credit card
roblox enforces age verification and separates users into age groups. yet, moderation is in shambles (did i mention ai-assisted?) and separating the kids in one bunch and the teenagers in another basically is just a feast for pedos and groomers
Putting "DON'T scan your face for X." at the very end would be even stronger.
Why? They did not mention the reason. What do these companies do with our face scans?
Who cares, they shouldnt have it or need it
They leak them to bad actors on the internet
If only the shareholders had a say in their incompetence lol
Good advice
Don't scan your face for Insta,
The influencers want your polaroid.
Don't scan your face for Twitter,
Elon wants your dogecoin.
Don't scan your face for YouTube,
The vloggers want your shorts.
Don't scan your face for Twitch,
The Slime Ranchers want your plorts.
too late I signed up for Revolut.
I had to scan my face a hundred times already for a hundred different places...
Hell, I live in a closed colony and the only way in is with a face scan. My biometric data is surely for sale in a hundred different places by now, so I guess I don't really care anymore
Its not like I have an option if I still want to get home
Yeah same here. I mean you're getting scanned everywhere now, like the grocery store, but I'm not linking my computer to my face. I will say going through the airport in Japan is a breeze compared to the shit show in US airports.
I get off the plane, get in line to check in and get my sticker, set up luggage delivery, and walk out.
I will scan my face and rub it all over the internet
Some people on Lemmy are retarded. They think saying things without justifying it means that people should care.
Nothing. There is a large contingent of anti Proton misinformation bots and uninformed laymen on Lemmy.
If you dig too much into it, it invariably ends up with a bunch of hearsay, very little to no evidence, and misunderstanding of rudimentary functions of the internet and international law.

Three comments by this account total and they’re all on this post.
As if there were any doubt
First off, proton accepts blacklists as doctrine, even though israel is in it.
Second, they removed a bunch of accounts the US demanded they remove, without cause. Proton is GARBAGE! They are the enemy.
Does Proton give its users data and internet history to Israel? GhostVPN for example was founded by Mossad Unit 8200, even caught luring and offering ludicrous sponsorship deals to all anti-zionism youtube channels, to spy and report all its users database to israel. Is Proton the same?!
Can you post the evidence against Proton?
Check out NymVPN. Far superior.
My face gets scanned by city run cameras everytime i go to the super market, and then the supermarket scans my face as well, not to mention smart passports with face scanning or whatever were introduced pre 2010. It's too late
I mean...they already have thousands of images and video on us. Not saying we should give it to them willingly but yeah we have already been cooked. If they wanted to generate a video of you doing illegal things they could and youd be jailed in an instant.
Thats why on the surface its good to pretend to support the maga regime so youre not on their radar. Then dismantle it from underneath. Thats how I look at it.
They don't have their own ai, they have an ai frontend which runs preexisting open weight ai models.
Proton does have a lot of fans probably because they are the most well known 'privacy' company and a lot of people set and forget without reading into them.
they have their own ai
They don't make it:
https://proton.me/blog/lumo-ai
Lumo is based upon open-source language models and operates from Proton’s European datacenters. This gives you much greater transparency into the way Lumo works than any other major AI assistant. Unlike Apple Intelligence and others, Lumo is not a partnership with OpenAI or other American or Chinese AI companies, and your queries are never sent to any third parties. Our research and development will remain focused on open models, which we will continuously improve and augment.
Per discussions online, it seems to be a mix of small Mistral and Olmo models, and GLM for the max tier.
This'd be like arguing a company hosting database software to serve a product is a "database software company." They are a hosting some tool made by someone else, with a sticker.
they also have the most ridiculous brand fans.
Perhaps. I'm a bit scared of how much critical mass they have, TBH. But this does not make them an AI company.
"Meet Lumo, the zero-access encrypted AI assistant by Proton"
I had a 2 year subscription with proton, I walked away from it with more than a year remaining. The ai and the right wing thing is just the tip of the iceberg, but I don't live to supply links and proof to proton fanboys (which is how this always goes), so all I suggest is that people pay attention to protons social media (reddit in particular) for a while before giving them your money and trusting them with your details, emails etc. If people cannot be bothered putting some effort into their choices, so be it, not my problem.
thanks for using Leebra!

Deleted Reddit after I got asked to do this to Confirm my age.
I didn’t need ro access any 18+ content on that platform but for me this was the alarm bell that made me actually delete my account.
