I know it is probably a bit delusional, but I am hoping it will prompt a lot of people to question why they are actually using these services and whether they really want carbon copies or something different. All of these services are designed to pull our attention and consume our time, and when you are used to spending hours a day scrolling content it can feel like a loss not having it, but I don't think it is actually what we want or need.

Services like Twitter and Reddit have trained people to be mostly passive consumers of fairly shallow content. We are constantly looking for fast moving and new content, even though that is not where the valule is. A large portion of users "lurk" instead of participating, and I believe that has largely been trained into us by using platforms where priority is given to "new" content (most of which is actually reposts and repeats of what has been said before) and where big is seen as better.

My belief is that the real value is in deeper discussions that can occur over time, and in smaller groups with engaged users who know each other. I'm not on Lemmy because I hope it will eventually become more like Reddit, I'm here because I hope it won't.

Funniest thing for me so far has been the excited tweet about branding and copyrighting "X Japan!" as part of their regional i don't even fucking know why am i trying to ascribe logic here. Look, they got excited and started screaming about owning the brand name x japan.

Don't be like me. I didn't realise I left my garage door open all day. Thankfully no humans entered or stole anything but a neighbourhood cat got in and didn't leave until 2 days later.

On the positive side, you have your glasses, even if they are a bit janky. Waking up without your glasses and having to try to find them whilst not able to see anything clearly due to lack of said glasses is never a life highlight. Realising that you cannot drive without your glasses, and that you cannot get to work without driving, also not fun. Rusty Raven's Reason #473 why drinking was not a good option.

Glasses shops are surprisingly helpful with that sort of thing.

That's me on night shift, half asleep at my desk come clock off but the minute I hop in the car I feel like I could stay awake all day.

It started out hard, then got easier with experience, but became hard again over the last 18 months as I became increasingly burnt out and sapped of energy (not to mention my appetite dropped a lot).

Frozen veg is a lifesaver. Tinned beans, as well as any premade stir fry sauces (which you can make once at home). Ginger garlic paste as mentioned in yesterday's thread. Makes all the difference between "ugh what a fiddly job this will take forever" to "okay I can do this quick" and actually getting into a flow.

An air fryer has hugely expanded options as I don't like using an oven (fiddly, takes too long to heat up) but it makes cooking a frozen crumbed fish or whatever a nice quick meal.

But yeah, the biggest thing that has helped my whole life is meal prep/bulk cooking. Fuck weekday cooking (usually). Whenever I do have the energy I'll power through and make enough to last a while, freeze anything I can't eat in the week, and thank myself when cooking is hard but there's something ready to go. When I'm tired or can't concentrate I don't mind eating the same thing for days on end.

(Anything that can be eaten with rice is much more versatile and worth cooking in bulk and freezing - mainly if you use a rice cooker.)

It takes a long time to become proficient at cooking, like at least ten years , so don't stress, accept you're on a learning curve

I agree with @Seagoon_@aussie.zone quick meals during the week. Pick up some pre-packed salads or frozen mix veg. Pair them with a protein or roast vegetables. Keep it simple. On the weekend spend time making more elaborate meals in larger quantities and freeze some.

It can take a while, especially when you are trying new things. I do pre-prepare a lot of things, but not all the sort of all-in-on batch cooking on the weekend. More cutting up vegies for a few days in advance. I do also make things like stews in larger quanties when I am making them so I often just have to prepare side dishes and not the full meal.

I plan meals in advance and have a basic template I follow so I don't have to start from scratch - nothing fancy, for example lunches are basically a repeat of toastie, sandwich, soup, sandwich & I just have to work out which specific type for each day. I write it on a whiteboard on my kitchen wall, which is directly in front of where I do food preparation. So I don't have to remember what is coming up & what I need to do, it is right in front of me. Then for example if I am cutting up a salad to go with dinner, I will look at the board and see I have two more salads planned in future, so I will get out two containers plus the plate for dinner, and fill them all at the same time.

I can hyperfixate and cook all afternoon, but then I make a lot of food to last me days. Otherwise, I keep things boring and simple.

Aah another Mighty Mite fan! My elder minipeeler likes it because it's just not quite as full on as Vegemite and is a helluva lot easier to spread evenly (for a child making their own sandwich with very soft fresh bread this is a bonus). Health care cards are awesome for the concessions. I'm glad your new job is a much better fit for you. We potentially spend so much of our lives at work and life's too short to be spending it with jerks, even for a modicum of financial security. And good on you for scoring some grocery bargains! I've been cruising by my local supermarkets at a certain time of day and have managed to nab some cheap fruit and veges this way. Especially handy when it's stuff that's normally a bit expensive like Brussels sprouts and snow peas.

I explained the reason for this on reddit. TL;DR African farmers have better access to refrigeration and transport, and as a result have switched to more profitable crops than cacao (the reason they were growing cacao specifically was because it can be dried and stored without refrigeration until transport is available and demand is present). The price of chocolate has to increase substantially. There’s no point stockpiling it.

This graph is a reflection of African farmers’ lives improving playing out in global supply/demand economics. It’s only “depressing” if the only thing you care about is your access to cheap chocolate.

Dinner is easy.. first you make some toast, or toast some english muffins if you're fancy, then you heat up the baked beans in the microwave. Then you simply pour the baked beans over the toast/muffins. Done! Make your meal international by adding a dab of hot sauce to take your tastebuds on a spicy Mexican adventure.
