Sony/Yoti reporting users to authorities for using GrapheneOS
2 months ago by RobotToaster to c/technology
To be completely honest with you, Sony hasn't released an interesting product in about 20 years anyway
Sony makes some of the best full frame cameras on the market. Granted it’ll cost you like $6k but Sony still makes some really good tech. I do not own a Sony products btw. In regards to cameras, I’m using Fujifilm, but they aren’t even close to Sony tech wise.
I thought so too but recently I actually met a professional photographer who works in marketing, and he told me that Sony cameras produced terrible colours across the board and recommended I go with Canon instead.
I've got no experience with either brands so no idea, my go-to was always Nikon.
Their OLED TVs have the best upscaling tech and I am glad they still support 4K Blu-rays because physical media is important to me. Otherwise most of their products have better alternatives.
It's somewhat interesting as a case study, how they break standards compliance to enforce proprietary lock-in.
Probably has more to do with the fact that GrapheneOS doesn't implement age verification thinking about it, I'm still gonna hold a grudge about SecuROM and XCP though
Till today you could flash Jolla’s SailfishOS on their devices.
Pretty sure that's still possible. I mean this whole post is about someone flashing an alternative ROM to their Sony device.
Your system experienced an unexpected error. Please reboot your computer. Thank you,
The peeps at Sony (™️)
All these scumbag companies are making it easier and easier for me to avoid their products.
I've pretty much gone back to my 2000s era mindset of "I don't need a smart phone when I have PCs in front of me at work and at home."
But really it's more like I already have an old smart phone but hate using it and never want to have to upgrade. We'll see what Motorola can make happen.
It is only a couple years ago that I bought my first iPhone. I still hate it.
You just have to get creative and shop around. I've had a full journey since the beginning of Android starting with HTC. Used Sony, Samsung, Razer... all went to shit one way or another.
Nowadays very happy with Redmi and Oneplus. I got a Redmi watch and it's battery lasts nearly a month!
Wow that's pretty fucked.
After going through the linked threads. Discussing graphene OS or any other ROM on r/privacy will get you banned. WTF‽
Because the person who makes it gets touchy on some things and started drama with someone or doxxed them or whatever type deal. It’s not like you can’t talk about it you just can’t use the word because he was going through and being weird about conversations about it. It’s nothing against him or them it’s just one of those developers being a unique type of person - which makes sense in the hyper privacy space.
He's certainly "unique".
I feel like he only gets away with it because people find the Dev of a privacy OS being incredibly paranoid somewhat reassuring...
There are other reasons to not use Linux, but Linux (+glibc +systemd +libinput...) is basically "the Unix" nowadays...
Pretty sure that is it. A lotta people in response to seeing him decry certain technologies tend to say, "that uncompromising nature on privacy is why GrapheneOS holds up so well." Which I gotta be real when I say that it really does make me feel more comfortable with GrapheneOS' development. I can't keep up with all news on it, I'm not wanting to completely audit all the source code, but having a development team led by someone like that does bring a sense of ease toward my phone.
Well all that would be great, but we all know none of that will happen. We can (and should) just stop buying Sony items however as they are not doing so great on that front already. This is the issue when brands do stupid shit, no one seems to want to just stop buying.
Ngl we basically can't buy anything anymore
I'ma have to re-remember a facet of my life where "I'll make do" was a thing. I mean, it still very much so is... but fuck, I could be "making do" even more if I tried just a little. I don't wanna, because comfortability and all that, but I've done more with less in my past. I'm tired, but I guess it is what it is for the time being. Really wish I didn't have to because of greedy evil, but fuck 'em... good luck in your bunker, I'll smile at the sun instead
We can (and should) just stop buying Sony items however as they are not doing so great on that front already.
Waaay ahead of ya there, buddy. I've been deliberately boycotting Sony since at least the rootkit in 2005, and I think the newest Sony product I actually bought was a Walkman cassette player.
Trouble is, Sony somehow still went right on existing as a huge multinational corporation for the last 20 years anyway. It's almost as if boycotts aren't enough and we actually need consumer protection law. 🤔
Gaming then: Three decent games a year
Gaming now: One decent game every three years.
Big budget exclusives sure, plenty of good games to play every year, and many "old" games get updates every year keeping them fresh, you would only buy expansions back then, while a 6/10 game 5 years after release can become a 8-9/10
Your comment does apply to Sony exclusives tho
It was aimed at AAA and AA.
Indie, as always, is doing just fine. But nobody needs a PS5 to play Slay the Spire 2.
The last console I bought was a PS3. I only bought it because it was one of the cheapest bluray players at the time. The games were way too expensive. Now I only play PC games and I wait a few years and buy them when they are on sale and have hopefully had all of the major bugs fixed.
The only reason I want one is for a remake anyway. I love Demons Souls but not that much
Coming to a country near you!
Sad stuff.
I'm not sure there's a direct connection to Sony here (I use a Sony phone and am thus interested in this).
The initial post of the linked Forum thread does not make any connection. The accompanying reddit thread makes the claim that "PlayStation/Sony recently introduced a company called Yoti for age verification" but Sony is not mentioned on Yoti's wikipedia.
What I am reading in the screenshots is pretty fucked up though.
So just Yoti reporting users to authorities for using Grapheneos, got it.
This particular community loves to play the paranoid victim, which is unfortunate.
I agree, but Sony literally helped invent DRM. Sony went all-in on "fuck you" to their customers back when we all adored them for the Walkman.
And it feels like they have only rarely done better, since then, after exhausting all other options.
So I agree - we do jump there too quick.
But when we are discussing Sony, the ire is valid anyway.
Everyone at Sony can go fuck themselves - today, yesterday and just generally.
Yes. I can't forget. Those fuckers at Sony fucked my Windows install so badly I had to wipe and rebuild.
GrapheneOS team has a pretty level take on the issue in the original thread:
This is fearmongering based on customer support making ridiculous claims to someone. There's nothing illegal about using GrapheneOS and the customer support is nearly certainly making it all up to get the person to go away so the ticket can be considered closed. It's unlikely the company has done anything to specifically detect GrapheneOS or ban using it. It's far more likely they detect not using a Google Mobile Services operating system without modifications. This customer support person went on a power trip to scare someone and get the ticket closed.
I agree that this is probably closer to the truth, but the combination of dismissiveness and assuredness seems inappropriate. Even if this is just a rogue CS rep taking the piss, it certainly warrants a response from Sony.
Let's end this bullshit once and for all, and go FOSS.
I did not know what Yoti was doing.
Our proprietary suite of AI services include NIST-evaluated passive liveness, facial recognition, as well as our patented SICAP injection attack detection tool.
Can't say I am surprised.
So it turns out Yoti has a Guardian Council, as well as an Ethics and Trust Committee, both intended to keep them on the rails: https://www.yoti.com/...
They are also a B Corp.
So either there's a way to make them realise this is a gross (and unethical) mistake. Or it's another proof that self-regulation by tech companies works as well as kids grading their own homework.
Authorities: "You're reporting wut?"
So, you know they discovered a material named graphene by pulling tape over graphite? Well some very evil people took that name to disguise a virus which takes over the phones of our customers and doesn't let the use our operating system.
Wait what
csrrying 2 phones is the way to go imho. One for these stupid apps and the other for your personal data. So its like the work / personal phone setup but instead we have private / non -private phone.
Dunno why I never considered that. A VPN over wifi on one, for banking and whatever... and then my phone. Hell, I used to carry an MP3 player, flip phone, and a camera if the time called for it. Making me feel like I lost my way lol, appreciate the succinct tip
Edit: smacking my head cause I literally have to carry two phones at work, as is. Why tf have I never considered this as an option for myself, even when I knew it was optional? Damn man, gonna grab me a phone for personal use and put this one to (for) work. Thanks again my friend
Lately I've been thinking that this, unfortunately, is the way.
This is likely the route I'll take in the near future.
For an in-depth technical breakdown and why GrapheneOS cannot bypass Google Play Integrity check even with it's Play Services Sandbox mode, check here: https://thecybersecguru.com/...
I am not going to ever buy Sony/Yoti devices now.
How is Sony connected to this? I only see references to the Yeti and Graphite OSs. (Misspelled because some commenters say they can’t say the name of an Os for some reason?)
TLDR; Playstation uses Yoti fot age verification
So, Sony uses Yoti — and it’s using a callback method so users can complete the Yoti verification flow by scanning QR code on their phone, similar to how OAuth2 allows? But if your phone has Graphene, the flow won’t work and instead triggers notification to local authority that someone tried multiple times to “bypass” it or something? Basically forwarding their own sever errors, due to incompatible clients, to the authorities?
Is that the right understanding?
Wait, but you can't run GrapheneOS on any Sony devices? Huh??
Wuuut?? Please be clickbait! If not... What the actual fracking wuuuut!
Grapheme is illegal? Didn't know
lol remember what happend last time
this is pretty par the course for Japanese companies. I'm not excusing it, i'm just saying Japanese companies will go all out with this kind of stuff. also look at Nintendo. They'll sue people to bejesus and back on a routine basis.
Yoti is British. I get you were talking about Sony, but I wouldn't want people to get the impression that this is a strictly Japanese thing.
I’m gonna tell him…
Ok, the authorities can try to unlock my phone to look for evidence HAHAHA
What? They just used my thumb without consent?
Because GrapheneOS only lets you use PIN or Fingerprint?
Because they think pattern is not secure?
Well, shit.
You can set up 2fa unlock now.
After fingerprint, I put in a PIN.
If that's not enough, you can always just require a full password unlock instead.
Are you actually complaining about having the option to increase security?
Sounds like GOS isn’t for you.
Yeah, I prefer iode but when I got my phone Pixel 8a still wasn't supported and I installed Graphene. Now I have too many apps to reinstall. My next phone will be iode though.
Are you trolling or just this ignorant? If you're referring to the US laws on this, a PIN can't be required from you. Any biometrics can. So a PIN already protects you from the authorities using their legal route to get into your phone via your compliance.
I'm saying that PIN is inconvenient. Most people prefer fingerprint over PIN because it's so much more convenient but it means you can be easily forced to unlock your phone. Pattern is a nice compromise but GrapheneOS developers decided to remove it because they consider it not secure enough. Which is baffling because PIN is just as easy to steal just by looking at someone's screen.
You can also have it randomize the order of the numbers in the keypad.
Still inconvenient and still can be easily stolen just by looking over your shoulder.
Blackberry had unlock mechanism that let you unlock phone with a single, quick gesture and was impossible to steal.

You had to swipe the number overlay to put a correct number in a specific place in the image. Quick, easy, secure.

Wow, thanks Sony. Still being cunts about copyright I see; nothing has changed since the SecuROM/XCP days...
