Call for donations for Lemmy.World (Autumn 2026)

7 days ago by lwadmin to c/lemmyworld

Calling for donations! We're running Lemmy.World for you to use for free, however the running costs aren't for free… If you appreciate our services and are willing and able to help out paying the bills, please consider a donation on one of these platforms:

The most recent blog post with financial information is from September as follows:

Thank you <3

And to everyone else as I won't reply to everyone so as not to spam up the thread :)

Also, we had some unexpected extra costs (over 1000,–) when we had to pay taxes for the foundation (strange, for a non-profit..). I'll see if we can get an accountant to check this, but also accountants are costly..

Ouch

Do you have any non-profit support organizations, local to where you have your accounts, that might be able to help for cheap or pro-bono?

Thank you for all the work you do!

I have now asked the accountant I also use for my business, to help out with the foundation.

It's not much but I gave €10, keep up what you do because it's my first day and I already don't want this place to go

I always feel self conscious sending small amounts, but then I think "maybe that's what stops a lot of people from giving any" because an entire crowd that feels awkward not giving more than 20 actually amounts to a lot

So, don't even sweat it! Give any amount

Yes, not only is your donation appreciated, but posting about it shows others that they can. Before I was an admin, it was a thread like this with people posting that they were donating that reassured me into making a small monthly recurring donation, so comments like yours are appreciated. <3

Hi admins! Could we get updated financial info for this year? Are the costs still the same? There was a tax bill last year, is there one this year? Did you ever find an accountant? As a small point of order, it's better to have all of the financial info up to date before asking for more money.

I setup a monthly reoccurring bank transfer last year, but I'd like to see current financial information to know if I need to adjust my transfer amount.

path: 0 26190395, hotness: undefined, score: 22, children: 1
ieh 3 points 6 days ago

I'm ashamed to say that I hadn't noticed the year, only the month, on the blog post. One of my fellow admins pointed it out, but… that's the most recent we have, so I've let it stand. lol. D'oh. It may be a little bit before someone can update that, but I'm adding some links to a few specific comments in this thread for tracking, so hopefully I can poke you when there is an update :)

(And I've only been here a couple of months as an admin, so I only know some rough numbers - I think the costs are generally not that different, but I can't swear to anything)

Edit: LW team, you are now free to wallow in the pool of monthly donation euros I have just set up.

Y'all, everyone should donate. I was totally for real banned, and literally just unbanned myself via bribes. It turns out that if you bribe @lwadmin@lemmy.world, they'll let you say "fuck" as many times as you want on the internet!

Seriously, try it out! Make a "donation" and then see if it worked by replying with the word fuck. I think it's actually the law that the internet admins have to let you say "fuck" if you publicly bribe them.

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck. See? Totally un-fucking-banned. Pic for proof.

TrackenDaKracken 4 points 6 days ago

Yeah, I know, I know.

I think of it as a way to prompt others to donate. "I donated, and you can too!", sort of thing. Like wearing an "I voted" sticker on election day.

Unless just doing a sticky once in a while does the job, I suppose.

Well my point is that it just seems that rewarding giving money seems to go against the intention of the Fediverse.

People giving money because they want the social clout/status symbol, versus people that give because they want something cool to succeed. Y'know?

Yeah, but fuck that. As long as you keep it small and near maintenance fees, it's fine.

Too many people react to one extreme with the opposite extreme.

Reddit gold was also a fine way to support Reddit, back when it deserved more support. Before they got greedy.

From what I know, non-profits can better calculate with lower but regular payments. I make a monthly payment of two Euro which isn't the world but it's steady, ends up a similar amount per year as you, and I won't cancel this anytime soon.

I think if everyone did recurring we might be able to post a request like this less than twice a year, which I think isn't too much, but it definitely is needed to help remind the one-time donators to consider donating again. But I'd definitely say it is all appreciated, though recurring does mean people will tend to set it and forget it. lol. That's why mine is a monthly, for sure :)

path: 0 26194370, hotness: undefined, score: 5, children: 1

I don't think there's a suggested amount. I can tell you that €1/mo helps, for sure. I personally donate $8/mo as it's the level I feel comfortable with. Not to encourage you to increase yours - scattered around this thread you can see a number of differing amounts, and they are all appreciated. :)

One can presume the preferred option is their preference.

But the preferred option makes little sense for Europeans in the SEPA region. SEPA transfers have no fees attached by law.

path: 0 26189084 26189843 26193520, hotness: undefined, score: 4, children: 1
ruud 2 points 5 days ago

SEPA is best for the European users. Ko-fi takes 0% on one-time donations and 5% on montlies. Liberapay takes 0%.

mnemonicmonkeys 3 points 6 days ago

Probably Liberapay. They don't take any fees because they're also funded via donations. The only fees that occur on there are the payment processors (banks, credit card companies, PayPal, etc), and you have to deal with those fees no matter what

path: 0 26189084 26193991, hotness: undefined, score: 3, children: 0
ieh 2 points 6 days ago

My understanding is Ko-Fi which is why it's preferred. As others pointed out, payment processors take out some fees for card usage, and my understanding is that Ko-Fi takes the least. That said, we have options because most of them aren't too bad, and all donations help :)

You guys down there don't always get the respect you deserve, and that includes one of the hallmarks of autumn: The return of pumpkin spice everywhere. I know Starbucks serves it globally around now, but it should be an autumn thing, not a spring thing, sooooo I'd imagine y'all are used to all that.

And if not, the dropbears will get ya for disagreeing, so there's that :)

I'm an idiot but can someone explain why Lemmy isn't P2P

path: 0 26190935, hotness: undefined, score: 4, children: 3
zoloftt 9 points 6 days ago

It's already semi-p2p by the way federation works. I think it would be highly ineffective to make it actually p2p.

Imagine having every user host their own community on an instance. Then you have to federate across other users to have other content in the instance, . But instead of it being 400 instances now, it's 77,000 instances all trying to stay current from various toshiba shitboxes.

Content aggregation is more of a "master list" problem than a computing problem to solve. Which is easier from a central repo.

the 90%/9%/1% rule or whatever suggests that ~90% of users won't give any effort, so any amount of friction like installing/debugging/managing/administrating their P2P setup is a no-go

There is something like that called Plebbit, it's a good example of all the downsides of such a system.

It's decentralized and "censorship proof" AKA completely unmoderated with all the spamming and unsavory content one might expect. The CSAM issue is mostly avoided because it doesn't support any kind of media sharing (only plain text) due to the bandwidth for P2P connections and avoiding having to store that on the client. Last time I checked content also simply disappears when users disconnect.

The federated system is better because it's more efficient and scales better since only a couple hundred instances have to send/receive activity instead of hundred thousands of users individually. It also helps ensure content is moderated. Admins tend to keep their own instance clean and defederate from instances that don't.

Most my donations go to lemmy.ca, which is my 'home' instance, but .world is definitely THE hub

I plan on donating 40$ when I can, I am a broke pos lol. But my last post here was bringing up how there should be a few sponsors and having user based services that can be shown via a top banner and only the sites that users gravitate towards while also keeping the site open source.

I'm not saying that you should take in government sponsors like reddit did but there's a good middle ground to where you can have some sponsors that the users gravitate towards, that's why i suggested tuxedo computers, graphene and maybe even a third party store that's known for selling google pixels.

I'm not against the donation based open source ran motto, in fact every single time I've ever thought about running an online store with shop, I'd have a paypal donation box to help support the site.

I just saw what one open source user based site did to combat some of their issues while still taking in user donations and thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to emulate what they did but for this site.

The example I gave that pulled this off when they were having some struggles rather than solely relying on user donations was Future4200.com an open-source cannabis extraction forum that has expanded towards botanical extraction of medicinal herbs. Anyway, they use the discourse layout and they were facing an issue with the site and refuses to take in corporate advertising and most everyone there is on board with the graphene scene and all that good stuff.

Defederate from the tankie bullshit and I’ll absolutely pitch in. But until then, I’m not paying to have a bunch of kids shit all over every discussion had.

Why can't you just block the instances you don't like on your preferred client? That's what I do, and I don't see comments from any user account on any instance I block. I think defederation should be reserved only for the most absolute eggregious problem instances. Instances the CP spammers were from, if you were around for that in the early days here, for example.

As long as they aren't spamming CP and brigading to vandalize posts and stuff, I don't think any instance should be defederated, even if I dont agree with the users there.

Like, I find Blahaj instance users generally annoying. I have never had a positive interaction I can remember with a Blahaj instance user. I can remember quite a few negative ones though. But I don't think Blahaj should be defederated. I just blocked the instance on my client and now I don't see any of their posts or comments (except via modlog, mod view, etc), they can still access communities here, and users here can still access communities there. Wins all around. My personal opinion shouldn't be a reason to remove everyone elses access to an instance they might like.

Pratai -7 points 6 days ago

I did block it. But you see…. Blocking the instance doesn’t stop the cretins from posting their bullshit all over .world. Hence… I won’t pay to support an instance that allows that trash to post their propaganda.

Ok, well I mean if its blocked for you, doesn't getting mad about it defeat the purpose of blocking it?

"I blocked my ex, but I just know they are talking to other people and that makes me mad." I know it's maybe not the same level of severity, but I mean, what's the point of blocking if you don't move on after?

I don’t think you understand how federated instances work. Maybe look into that.

Don't forget, you can block communities and users. This is a a solution to your problem. It may not be the quickest or the most effective, but it's better than not doing anything in your own power to do so.

Oh I know. But the onus shouldn’t be on the myriad people that have asked them to defederafe from that trash. Many insurances have e already done it- .world is just too chickenshit to lose the content.

And what quality content it is.

I can respect that opinion, and I will say… I have a number of people blocked. It's easy to do.

Speaking only for us here on Lemmy.World, we try to ban people who break the Lemmy.World ToS, which include issues like bigotry, incivility, spam, things like that. Not necessarily opinions with which we might disagree or find unpleasant. I think if I allowed myself to ban anyone with whom I disagreed, I would find myself quickly de-adminned, and rightfully so - it would kill the fedverse.

There are other tools for dealing with, well, tools. Including blocking on a personal level, or having community rules in place that make sense for that community that can help create spaces that are more comfortable to be in.

So while I agree with your sentiment, understanding the roles of the instance admins vs community moderators or individual choices - that's why I set up a monthly donation before I became an admin. Because Lemmy provides me with good content and communities.

Everyone is absolutely free to make their own choices. And this reply is not an attempt to beg you to donate.

It’s propaganda. And it should be banned for that alone. They play by the rules, they come they antagonize and they report people for losing their cool. They’re trolls.

There’s nothing good that comes from them.
