I wouldnt limit yourself to native linux. Check out protondb.com. You can even use non-steam games through steam for use with proton (or if you're feeling more technical you could use other tools that are more hands on).

Absolutely! Currently running Diablo 4 on the SteamDeck using Proton Experimental. Runs perfectly on medium-high settings at 45-50 fps. It's insane how far we've come. When I first started using Linux over ten years ago, running Windows games was nigh-impossible. And Valve finally released their Steam client for Linux, the selection of games was ... very limited.

Yeah, that's part of the reason why I didn't re-install Linux until recently. I would install it every few years, but it was only recently that I decided to keep it.

I didn't quite know about ProtonDB and what it could do, but I did know that a lot more games are compatible lately so I thought I'd try it out. Linux is doing great it seems!

I used this guide: https://www.polygon.com/...

I read that it is apparently also possible to simply install the Blizzard Launcher from Lutris, but I haven't tried that personally. The above guide worked without problems for me, though.

Stardew Valley is really lightweight and Linux native.

Since you mentioned battery being an issue and that you just switched to Linux, have you looked into using TLP or Powertop to try doing some tweaks to squeeze out a bit more? It's been years since I've used Linux on a laptop, but that's what I used.

path: 0 72379, hotness: undefined, score: 18, children: 4
Witch 3 points 3 years ago

Never actually heard of those software until now. I looked it up and found out something about TLP having default settings---does this mean once I install it, I don't have to touch it again? Or do I have to do something like go into a terminal and install default settings after I install it?

I installed it, I just don't know what the next step is.

All Steam Deck verified games should play just fine on that laptop. While Intel Xe graphics are not the greatest, Steam Deck is restricted to 15W and you laptop is not.

Wait, what? Is that why everyone's recommending steam deck games? I assumed Steam Deck verified games required something like, an okay GPU. Its actually the voltage? That definitely makes my life easier, lmfao.

path: 0 107636 111193, hotness: undefined, score: 1, children: 3
Hexarei 3 points 3 years ago

Well, the TDP of the chip is only part of the equation; The main thing is that the Deck is limited in performance in ways that your laptop likely is not, regardless of clock-for-clock differences.

By the Steam Deck's site, the verification means that:

  • It plays well with the Deck's inputs
  • Can use the Deck's native resolution or similar (1280x800 or 1280x720) without issues
  • It "just works" without having to tinker with the game
  • Every component of the game is supported by Proton if running a non-native game

Intel Xe doesn't seem that bad, specially compared to older Intel GPUs (UHD 630-like). Correct me if I'm wrong, but they're basically low power versions of Intel Arc. I still don't think they're on level with a RDNA 2 GPU like the Deck one.

Baba Is You, The Binding of Isaac, Celeste, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Darkest Dungeon, Dicey Dungeons, Enter the Gungeon, FTL, Hollow Knight, Into the Breach, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, Monster Train, Opus Magnum, Slay the Spire, Spelunky.
And traditional roguelikes are always good: Crawl, Brogue, Nethack.

I mean, if you install Steam, you're not that limited in terms of ports, are you? Just about any game being solidified for the Steam Deck to run through Proton will also have the same effect on other Linux distros.

Of course, if it's a low-end laptop, you'd aim for relatively simple, 2D or old games, but they don't explicitly have to be ported to Linux.

The Battle for Wesnoth is one of those oldies but goldies when it comes to Linux gaming.
I'd also heartily recommend trying out OpenMW (not just because I'm part of the team there) as a modern way to play Morrowind, though the upcoming release is not entirely finished, there are a few blockers being hammered away at still.

Veloren is inspired by games such as Cube World, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft.

You can play single player or multi-player, standalone or use an online server, or even host your own server in a Docker container, or on a Raspberry Pi. Plenty of options!

You start by creating your character, you can collect items for your inventory, you can craft items, there are weapons and combat, you develop skills, can tame creatures, you can trade with merchants, you can socialise, and lost more. There is no single, specific goal or focus, and the idea is to keep exploring and have adventures.

The game is community driven and actually updates quite regularly.

It is clearly no clone of Minecraft. It is fun and adventure!

See https://veloren.net/

I've seen OpenMW mentioned (and it's fantastic), but you might want to check out Daggerfall Unity as well. The game's available at no cost, and you can find a zip of the necessary game files on the install guide in the dfworkshop forums.

It's way better than the old DOS version, and it supports mods, too.

path: 0 76348, hotness: undefined, score: 7, children: 7

Alright so I was a little confused on OpenMW but it appears that it is, in fact, complete enough to play? Nice. I now finally have an excuse to play.

I completely forgot about Daggerfall existing. I'm just reading through the wikipedia article. "Daggerfall consists of 15,000 cities, towns, villages, and dungeons for the character to explore." I am intimidated, yet intrigued.

There are a few videos on YouTube of people showing heavily modded Daggerfall, and it looks pretty great. It does seem to have been embraced by a dedication community of modders who provide full instructions of how to get it all set up how they have it.

Here’s one sample video of what people have accomplished.

I've completed several playthroughs of Morrowind on OpenMW, and I've found it to be superior to the original engine in every way. The only thing that you might have issues with is certain mods may not be compatible with it, but I don't really use mods.

Daggerfall's a huge game, but it gives you a ton of freedom in how you play. Once you figure out the basics, it's a great dungeon diving experience. Although the procedurally generated dungeons aren't everyone's cup of tea, since they can get pretty crazy sometimes. I would highly recommend a teleportation spell (mark/recall all-in-one).

And some mods are easily portable to OpenMW, depending on how they're implemented. I fixed a simple Mana Regen mod just by checking that its scripts were modifying the right variable. The mod editor built into OpenMW is as user friendly as any mod tool I've ever used.

Multiplayer OpenMW did everything for me that ESO's Morrowind Expansion failed to. The dice-roll combat of Morrowind isn't for everyone, but ESO didn't even feel like an Elder Scrolls game to me. And with OpenMW, even the combat system is technically optional now.

OP, MUDs are a real treat if you've never experienced them, but you want to find a good, active, sane one. I highly recommend Discworld MUD, even if you're not familiar with the Discworld book series. I've been there on and off since the late 90s. It's amazing how much love this game still gets from admins and creators, and it's 100% free to play.

Just keep in mind they're no less addictive than their modern equivalent, MMOs.

Or if you want a more chill game maybe something like Gris? It has a gold rating on ProtonDB so should work fine. Gives u the feels too which is a bonus.

Nuclear Throne. It's a fun Roguelike dungeon crawler. A run from beginning to "end" (last level before looping) can take 15min and I've spent 100s of hours playing over the years. There' are so many characters you can choose to play, each with its own unique special ability.

If you want an old classic, I've been playing rollercoaster tycoon 2 recently and there is an open source engine for it (openrct2) that has native linux compatibility. The controls take some getting used to, But I think that artstyle looks totally amazing.

Or even the first RCT as it's written in assembly. Can't get much more efficient than that, even a potato can run it.

I'm also amazed by it. How can you write a full game that looks as good as Rollercoaster Tycoon when you're shifting bits left and right on the stack? Some kind of wizardry, that's what.

But yeah the first part is more than worth it in itself.

It's been soonβ„’ for years. The dev has been fairly quiet about it, but popped up now and then on his blog or twitter with new deets.

It was initially supposed to be just a small addition to the game, but has ballooned, and will now nearly double the game's size when it finally drops. Each time I've checked though, there's been some news.

And when I did just now to get links to the new music and gameplay that I found last time, I just now found out you can try out some new content in the game using a secret beta branch on steam. Its right there in the news feed if you go look at the game in your library.

I know that you can run TES 4 Oblivion decently well on Linux with a Windows emulator (WINE). I had a few odd graphics glitches like a gigantic texture of a tree just completely taking over the sky. I guess it wanted to be some kind of Yggdrasil tree or something.

It ran well though, and on a early 2010-era laptop. I don't know about mod compatibility though.

path: 0 119288, hotness: undefined, score: 2, children: 1
Onihikage 4 points 3 years ago

WINE Is Not an Emulator πŸ˜‰

Seriously, that's what the acronym means, because it's not an emulator, it's a compatibility layer.

There's also Proton for Steam games, or even non-steam games, though it's a little more complicated to set up in the later case.

Oblivion's excellent with mods, though I'm unfamiliar with modding Bethesda games on Linux.

How well do these run in wine now? When I last tried (a good few years ago), I remember bugs that stopped me doing a full play through, although I don't remember what they were. I'll give it another shot if things are better now.

On the back of the EV recommendation, I'd add Endless Sky. Very heavily inspired by the EV line, although the feel of combat is a little different. Open source and under development, and should run on most hardware.

A Vampyre Story worked nice on Wine on an old computer with Mint Xfce when I played it last year. Only had to set Wine as windowed full screen, since the game got issues when alt-tabbing. Also worth noting it requires DirectX on Windows, so you'll have to use DXVK.

Haven't seen any PICO-8 games lag on Linux, and both Celeste Classic games were released on PICO-8.

Dust: An Elysian Tail might be playable, bar maybe two areas (one mandatory) that have a lot going on.

Slay the Spire should run fine, but I had to sideload an older version of OpenJDK to get it working (maybe 8 or 11; don't remember which exactly).

Songs for A Hero also seems to run fine.

Tanglewood is a Mega Drive homebrew, so should be playable on any emulators your PC can run.

Va-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action also runs fine.

BΓΆbl and Nix: The Paradox Relic should both run fine on NES emulators.

Not an answer to your question but when you say " I find that it has battery issues trying to play anything fancy like Skyrim" do you mean that the battery drains while plugged in or that you are mainly playing while not plugged in and your battery life is really short.

If it is the former then you might just need to buy a higher wattage power adapter to sustain. The power draw.

One Hour One Life and Two Hours One Life (open source) can be run on pretty much any computer.
The concept is: you're born as a baby or a fertile woman and you have to gather and build to survive. Your maximum age is 60 years (OHOL) or 120 years (2HOL) and you hunt, gather, build tools, have babies and raise them. You can become the matriarch of a huge multigenerational family and build towns, buildings, farms, roads and weapons. People keep adding to it, I haven't played in awhile but I think they have cars and airplanes now.
The graphics are MS Paint-quality but the gameplay is so incredibly fun. Highly recommend.

I will second Cuphead. Fair warning: it’s really difficult in that old-school sidescroller way in that you will lose many lives and you will have to try the levels again many times. But it is far and away one of my favorite games ever because the developers hand-animated it in 1920s rubber hose style β€” I’m talking frame by frame, by cell. They have a great art book too if you really take to it like I did. πŸ˜… ! Book. Page.
