How many showers do you take a day?

3 years ago by lacarsi to c/asklemmy

Curiosity only.

Here in Brazil it's very common to have several showers a day. I, for example, take two. The first is when I wake up, before I go to work, and the second is when I get home from work. I wake up at 6.30am and get home at 8pm.

edit: I said bath, but I meant shower.

mholiv 80 points 3 years ago

That seems really intense to me. Even if you mean shower when you say bath I can’t imagine doing it twice a day. In the summer I normally shower once every two days. In the winter once every 3 days. I am located in northern Germany so it might be a culture difference.

it's only normal to take a twice a day bath in a hot tropical climate.

like it's only normal to take a bath twice a week in a cold geographical area.

Your comment is important. Many people from tropical climates think that people who don't take many showers a day are unhygienic. Just as many people from colder climates think that people who shower a lot are crazy.

I live in a mountain town, and I still shower every day when I get home from work. I am an electrician and tend to get pretty dirty throughout the day, and at minimum need to clean my feet so my boots don't develop stank. I may forgo a shower on Sunday if I've spent the day on the couch or being lazy around the house, but if I've had any form of physical activity, shower.

Pretty much. I’m in Texas. During the winter, every two or three days is fine. As long as I’m not doing anything to get dirty, it just isn’t needed. Excess showers will just dry my skin out, and washing my hands/feet/face is enough for daily maintenance.

But during the summer, all bets are off. Shower in the morning because the AC in apartments struggles to keep the bedroom cool and I woke up in a pool of sweat. Then sweat heavily on the way to the car, at lunch, on the way home from work, and again when taking the dog for a walk. Of course I need another shower by bedtime.

Yes, the actual difference doesn't concern the climate, whether it's cold or hot, it's simply cultural. In Germany, is it common for all Germans to adopt the same bathing posture or does it depend on the region?

I think it is the same across all of Germany. I think it might be similar for most of Northern Europe if I had to guess.

It mainly depends on the season. Southern Germany may have more sun hours and slightly warmer climate, but not enough to take effect on the showering schedule. Some people shower every day nevermind the weather, but I would say every 2-3 days is standard. In summer or after workout it may be everyday or even twice, but nothing comparable to brazilian climate. Of course people have jobs where they get dirty, but that's another topic.

Taking multiple baths a day can dry out your skin really quickly, you need to take one a day, at most. Even so, the areas that need to be washed daily are your pits, face, feet and groin. You could get away with a "whores bath" (washing just those 4 parts with a soapy rag) most days and a full bath every few days.

The exception being if you sweat a lot or have a dirty job of course.

I agree, and there are studies on the amount of showers we can take. I, for example, work sitting down and with the air conditioning on. The problem is travelling from my home to work. It's impossible not to arrive at work very sweaty. An extremely crowded train/bus or just walking for five minutes is enough to make you sweat a lot.

Not of it's just a quick rinse in cold water. Many people in Latin America take a shower multiple times a day but it's not what people in the US would call a shower. It's quick and often doesn't involve soap. I shower at least twice a day but only one of those is a real "shower" shower with soap.

I second this as a principle, though I have a hard time not showering once per day. It's a complicated balance, between not drying your skin with water and soap and not smelling.

I lived in Brazil for quite some time and, it being a huge country, I behaved differently depending if I was in a tropical or subtropical climate. I would mostly have one shower in the morning, except when it was mad hot and humid, when no matter how lightly you dressed, you'd still be drenched in sweat after a while

Are you sure it's the shower that is bad for your skin? People use so much soaps and shampoos and they never think that those could be the problem.

I would reduce the use of those products if you are a heavy user. The ads have made people think they need chemicals to become clean when hot water is enough.

[For the sake of other commenters: OP likely meant washing oneself, regardless of immersion bath or not. It's just that Portuguese "banho" can mean both "shower" and "bath".]

From 4 to 12 times a week. If it's mid-winter and I spent the whole day working (from home, no heavy labour), I might skip a shower day, never two in a row because that's nasty. If it's hot I'll probably take a proper/cleaning shower every morning, plus a quick shower around 18:00. (I'm from Paraná.)

The cold in Paraná is a delight, right? Here in Rio de Janeiro, the cold is an illusion. I think I can go without a shower for a day, if I don't have to leave the house and it's freezing cold.

Less than one a day. If I’m just hanging around the house I don’t bother. During the work week, once a day. If I’ve done something that works up a sweat and/or gets me dirty (yard work, cleaning the car, etc.) that gets a shower.

Not Brazil but my brother lived in a similar climate and showered before work, at lunch (everyone went home at lunch most days), and before bed.

He also had a massive stack of undergarments which included white t-shirts. He would sometimes change shirts more than he showered. For context he had to wear office attire but could wear Bermuda shorts.

Further context, we are swarthy Canadians that sweat when we eat a sandwich but he's was really thin/fit at the time. Still sweaty.

It depends on the weather, how active I've been, how presentable I need to look for something, etc.

Normally I can skip a day, sometimes two, between showers. I don't live a super active life, and I shave my head so don't really have to worry about my hair getting greasy and gross.

If I'm having a more active day or it's hot out I'm probably showering every day, and depending on what's on my schedule for the day and what I get up to in between I may end up showering 2 or 3 times.

In the winter months a shower every night. Sometimes I skip a night if I’m lazy or I’ve stayed home all day.

In the summer I will maybe take 2-3. One is a proper shower. The two or three are quick 20 second cold water rinse to cool myself down. Helps to have one right before bed on a hot night.

Once a week, whether I need it or not.

It would be interesting to see how shower use correlates with water temperature. It feels like that correlation would be negative and usage of showers is premised on the existence of cheap energy, AKA fossil fuels.

I would suspect a correlation more with climate. If it's temperate, you don't shower as much as when you're hot and sweaty all the time.

Also, geothermal power exists.

I was gonna say with the prevelance of air conditioning. In warmer places that have ample water supply but little AC, i would expect more showers as people sweat throughout the day and don't want to be stinky.

I shower once a day in the morning, but i almost never sweat because im almost always in the AC.

What makes my skin stay ok during summer? I do take several baths per day (in the sea). Is it that there’s no soap involved or maybe the salt water?

US here. I can't remember the last time I had a bath. I'm very tall, so I don't fit into tubs easily. My dream is to add a giant whirlpool tub to my home, so I can actually lounge and stretch out in the tub.

As far as showers go (which was OP's original intent), I shower once a day, when I first wake up. My body produces natural oils faster than most people, so I need a daily shower to keep them at bay. I feel really gross if I skip a day.

My wife, on the other hand, showers once every other day. She says her skin and hair dry out when she showers daily, so she needs the break. She gets split ends in her hair easily.

We're actually both retired at the moment, so we don't have to get up and go anywhere first thing in the morning. So I need to remind my wife to shower every few days. If not, she'll easily go 3-4 days without it, and then she becomes a "swamp monster." (Her words, not mine)

In the winter, probably once a week. Unless I do something strenuous, then it would be once I get back home

Summer time, mostly daily.

Typically once every other day, depending. I spend most of my average work week inside at home, and my very thin hair responds much better when I only wash it every 2-3 days. If I'm going out or otherwise get dirty/smelly, it's cleaning time regardless.

One a day in the winter, I try and time it for after I work out, otherwise it ends up being two showers, same if I have to do a lot of jobs round the house.

Two a day in the summer with the second shower being cold/cool water at night before bed. There is zero chance I want to get into a clean bed being all sticky and sweaty, and zero chance I go anywhere in the morning without a shower.

Once a day before going to bed. I work in an office with AC, but if I did physical labor I'd probably also shower as soon as I got home.

On hot summer nights I also shower in the morning before going to work.

Isn’t that the shampoo that’s the issue? It’s possible to shower/bathe without shampoo.

Shampoo makes it worse, by far. Depending on the shampoo, you should really only use it like once or twice a week, and that's if you like shampoo. It's pretty much optional, hence the new "no poo" movement.

Any old water will remove the healthy sebum oils that you want protecting your hair. Depending on the type of hair, and personal factors, you should only be washing your hair a couple times a week. Basically once it starts to feel dirty or unclean, wash it, otherwise leave it alone.

Water is really good at cleaning. People don't realize that washing your hands with water alone will kill a lot of bacteria, and remove the vast majority of dirt and grime. Obviously please don't give up soap... especially for your hands, just trying to illustrate how effective water is at removing things, even things it's normally not known to mix very well with (oils).

A bit of both. It dries out your skin to shower every day, and I honestly don't feel like I need to shower every day with not-particularly-active lifestyle. Saves water and electric, as well, but not enough for that to be the reason why.

1 + 1 after heavy exercise

In winter I might skip a day here or there, as it can help dry skin.

I used to do it right before work so I was nice and fresh for work, no I'm wfh and I do it after I finish work as an end of day barrier.

When I was younger and much more active, I was a shower every day person. Now that I’m older, I find every other day or three to be good for my skin. I’ve always had a very ruddy complexion, but I’ve figured out that on days I don’t shower, my skin looks its best. So I try to go as long as I can before my armpits start smelling. When I first started skipping days, my scalp would get oily quick, but now my second day hair is pretty nice too (probably also thanks to going with a silicon free conditioner). Basically I just try to shower when I smell or have been sweaty.

Florida here.

Once a day in the evening, unless I really get sweaty in the day (yardwork or hot yoga) then twice but soap (not everywhere) once a day, shampoo about twice a week, but rinse, conditioner, and restyle hair most days.

Husband washes like OP, in the morning before work and in the evening too. It's hot here.

Twice. I am not a healthy human so I try and play on the cleaner side of life because getting sick is kinda easy and sucks a little extra like that.

Environmental guilt keeps them at seven minutes each average (yeah, I timed them. I don't even remember why, but that guilt seems viable enough)

Occasionally when the youtube hits just right the night time shower can be 15 minutes. Or it is complex grooming day and not just a shave or something.

I take as long and as hot of showers as I can because I know in 10-20 years, that will be a luxury. I also know that it's pointless for me to try to conserve. If me, all my neighbors, all my neighbors' neighbors, and everyone all of us knows made a pledge to use as little water as we could, it would be insignificant in the face of inefficient agriculture and corporate greed. Every one here could use over 50 gallons of water a day and it would still be absolutely miniscule compared to industrial use.

Anyone saying that water conservation should happen on an individual level is smoking some corporate BS. On an individual basis, there is enough water for everyone to live like a watery nymph if they choose to. It's corporations that are overwhelmingly sucking up the supply.

So take your time in the shower. Don't stress about frivolous uses right now. They won't be around forever and taking advantage of them presently won't do diddly to stop the future.
