Smartphone sales down 22 percent in Q2, the worst performance in a decade::North American sales are bad for everyone, except, miraculously, Google.

Who would have thought that the stagnation in development means people don't want to buy a new phone for a 2% better camera every year. I recon we gonna see anti repair hitting new heights tho cos u gotta squeeze money out of people somehow.

Rise in inflation, cost of living.

Happened to desktop PC's a couple decades back. Once there's no reason to buy a new PC or phone, you stop buying a new PC or phone. Before that buying a new PC every few years meant less lag and needed ram/hard drive space.

Something not long ago reminded me of Weird Al's "It's All About The Pentiums" from 1999. And I went through it line by line to see what holds up and what doesn't. Best line: "Your motherboard melts when you try to send a fax."

There's an entire verse dedicated to the joke of how quickly computers became obsolete, which just isn't a thing anymore. A decently spec'd desktop can last a decade in service now.

For example you have a a bidet, and several people in your household. Each person likes the water temperature differenr, or their anus is in a different position. Usually, one has to configure those settings manually each time they poop. Well, no more with the anal print identifier (API). You can sit, relax and do your business, the API will read your anus print and adjust the temperature and water aim automatically.

We had to remove a bunch of features to fit the wheels and rc antenna, stuff like the phone capability, installing non-Google content, and anything that could prevent ads, Firefox is no longer something you can use, but it's worth it for zoomy phone functionality.

Also there's a subscription fee now or you have to listen to ads before your call.

Despite it being WORSE than last year. I went from a iPhone 10 Plus to an iPhone 11 after dropping my phone in used motor oil and fucking up all the speakers/mics. I didn't realize that I'd be getting a MASSIVE downgrade in image quality. Comparing the photos they take side by side, the iPhone 11 looks like a 4 MP camera from a decade ago. EDIT: OK guys, I get it, I was wrong. It was an iphone 8 Plus, not 10 Plus.

"The average sell price is up from $663 to $738 year over year, indicating it's the premium phones that are selling, and all the cheap vendors are getting shut out."

Totally disagree with the article's assumption, I'd say you are more correct. No one wants to or has that much money to pay for ridiculous prices, so sales are tanking. The few who can, or must buy a new phone certainly aren't going to buy something with no staying power when hundreds of phone makers have coke and gone in the last decade.

I don't know why people still use the big carriers. Subsiding the phones and getting an upgrade every 2 years was the reason to use them. Now they just add the cost of the phone to your bill.

The brilliant thing is they've gone from "We'll buy the phone, but there's a $200 ETF" to "we won't buy the phone, and there's no ETF. But now if you cancel you owe us $1,000."

If you think you're not using "the big carriers" in the US I've got news for you: you are using the big carriers. They are all either owned or leasing bandwidth from the big carriers. It's nothing more than an illusion of choice.

If they are cheaper or different in any meaningfully way, it's still worth it. Not sure if would be considered an illusion of choice or not, unless you want to boycott them of course. Not American though so not sure how different they are.

But for example I am on a cheaper carrier owned for the most common carrier here in Spain which is quite expensive. And it's cheap as fuck compared with the main one and unless you want their tv deal it has 99% of the same services for a fraction of the costs.

They should really stop over saturating the market by releasing new models every year with little to no meaningful upgrades.

Even mid-range phones nowadays are good enough to last long after they stop receiving updates, it therefore makes little financial sense (for the average consumer) to buy the newest model every year, not even touching on the environmental impact.

I find that the smart processing is good enough 90% of the time and I don't want to both haul the camera and handle the post processing anymore. I'd rather just have 90% quality photos of my family and spend more time with them. Hire a photographer for weddings, etc, but really the smart processing is pretty impressive for day to day and even trips.

I mean this right here: I miss those glorious days in the late 2000s when phones were fun. You could buy a phone that fit your lifestyle. If you text and email a lot, get a phone with a keyboard. Take a lot of photos? Get a camera phone. Like listening to music? Here's a media phone. Like games? Here's a gaming phone. Just want a thing that can make phone calls that will last a month on a charge because you don't use it much? Here's a regular old flip phone.

Nowadays you don't even have a real choice in size. Want a small phone that's easy to fit in a pocket because you usually have a laptop with you anyway? Get bent!

I was considering getting a mirrorless camera and a compact lens setup for traveling with my family. After a week of researching I stayed with my phone. It's a huge pita (especially once you consider post processing) and the only situations where you will really need one is low light or evening pictures, and nature photography.

So no, hauling a dslr and 3kg of lens is not really a solution, especially with a kid in one arm. My phone is several years old (Oneplus 7 Pro) and the only thing I wish it had was modern camera and software to match.

Phones also aren't special anymore. Like the days where phones were flashy and people needed the best/newest phones are gone. Everyone knows everyone has a phone, nobody cares what phone it is. Planned Obsolescence / E-Waste Entropy seems to have been the main reason I upgraded to a new phone for like the last three phones I've owned. Eventually the phone just devours all the processing power and makes it feel bad to use, or the battery stops charging or depletes in hours even while idle.

This. The sealed phone is the #1 reason why people are getting new phones and contributing to the eco waste.

It should have never been allowed to happen. I promise you there is a way to make a phone with a removable back waterproof. They just don't make it because they want you to replace the phone every two years.

They also haven't rushed to make longer lasting batteries, say 4 years, for the same reason.

You don't even need a hardware change to make batteries last long, capping charging at 80% and slowing the fast-charging will do that, both of which can be done in OS software. They just need a "battery protection mode" option for people who keep their phones plugged in a lot.

In fact I think smart phones peaked 3 or 4 years ago and we're going downhill now. The manufacturers remove features that people like in favor of objectively worse ones (lots of people loved having the fingerprint reader on the back, now it's either gone entirely or under the screen for some stupid reason?, then of course headphone jacks are going extinct).

When is the last time a smart phone had a major improvement over it's predecessor? And I mean like, "This one didn't have a camera, this one does." Especially since they're converging on the same 5.7" black rectangle.

I understand 'worst sales' but 'worst performance' doesn't really fit. It's in my opinion this is a fantastic performance on the market. With right to repair, longer software support, some models with replaceable batteries, we can use the phones longer and make the industry more sustainable and consumer friendly. For the last years already, the model feature upgrades were marginal and it's fine that way.

In the future, I'd hope for further technical and regulatory development in that direction, resulting in further reduced annual sales numbers.

Phone plateaued 5 years ago for the average user.

I have a one plus 6. I'm on it for hours everyday. Reading. Browsing. Listening. No gaming. Lots of pictures.

My online data ran out long before my phone data - for pictures.

Phone runs fast. No more updates so nothing changes on me anymore.

I have zero reason to update. Would I like a better camera? Sure. But not for 1200$ I don't.

Could my battery last longer? Yeah. Sure. But I can replace it if I want for 20-40$

My next phone will probably be a refurbished last Gen phone. Nothing more then 400 I imagine.

Honestly... most people probably would benefit from a phone as powerful as a laptop. Imagine I could carry my laptop in my pocket and all I need to turn it into an ergonomical computer would be to pop it into a docking station. I would love that. I barely use a computer outside of my work computer, to the point where it's barely worth owning one. I do, for some random fringe cases, but it gets used once a week...

I would love a laptop powerful phone with docking capabilities. Just have it down regulate to normal phone needs, until it's docked.

You can even make the phone thicker if you want, if it's going to be that useful, I don't care about a little extra weight in my pocket.

Wow thanks! I just saw DEX in the hidden option menus and wondered what it even did. That's really cool.

Does it just launch a bigger version of your phone, or is it like a separate OS where you can have multiple windows doing different things simultaneously? The Samsung marketing materials mostly seem to talk about being able to use your phone and the other screen separately. But it doesn't really go into detail what you can do on the other screen.

Samsung Galaxy A54. 5 years of guaranteed updates, including 4 Android version updates. 120hz QHD screen. High quality cameras that record on 4K (yay! I can't watch that anywhere because I don't own any 4K screen). Sleek and familiar UI. 25W Fast charging. Seamlessly works with my earphones and Watch. Plays almost all mobile games I could possibly want. Basically it's just โ€œan phoneโ€.

Things it doesn't have:

  • Wireless charging: doesn't faze me at all.
  • Glass back: which only exist because of wireless charging, not a fan of the aesthetic, so whatever.
  • Aluminum body: this is the only thing I wished it had, but it would add a hundred or two more to the price for very little extra durability. As it is, the phone feels very sturdy and doesn't bend in any way. I rarely drop phones, and keep them permanently in a case. So it's not a deal-breaker.
  • Ultra high performance: don't need it, I wanted a phone not a graphics behemoth. This chip is plenty enough.
  • Only 256 GB without SD expansion: I have to use two sim cards, which rules out using an SD due to the hybrid tray. I have been abusing the storage with application installs and media download though, and still haven't hit 40% of used space. Unless I start using it as a hard drive I would not need more than this for a long while.
  • S-pen support: I once tried this out with a Note phone of an acquaintance. Really cool feature. Definitely not a must have.
  • HDR: There isn't any content or screen in my context that can do this yet either.

I still haven't met a task I wanted to do that the phone didn't deliver appropriately. The smoothest and nicer phone I've ever owned.

Oh, and the transfer was super smooth too. I picked up the new phone at the end of a mostly hands free one hour process, and it was like I had just picked the soul of my old phone in a new body. Everything was exactly in the same place that I left it in and 100% functional without any extra setup required. I have seen Apple's transfer and, compared the two, Apple was a pain in the ass and unreliable (several failed tries and the thing only half worked after almost a whole day).

Partly because everybody's finances are stretched pretty thin, but also partly because phones got Good Enough like 6 years ago and so at this point you basically replace one when it breaks and replacement cost exceeds repair costs unless you're an enthusiast who demands the latest and greatest.... which is why the lucrously short support window for security patches on most Android devices is obscene. I know the technical reasons for them, but they're still unacceptable.

Goodness the S9. If I could turn back time and keep that phone. I ended up "upgrading" to an S20 or 21 and hated every second of my interaction with that phone. I ended up "upgrading" again to the fold just so I could have a physical fingerprint sensor instead of the garbage screen one but now have to deal with bad apps and wonky battery life and no cases.

I really think Samsung peaked at the S7 or S9 both were fantastic phones.

Bad, non-consumer centric marketing forces poor changes. We could invest in all day battery life, or we could make the frame out of titanium. Titanium is easier, so boom, done! Do you want a headphone jack, or do you want a slide in the presentation that says the phone is 0.2mm thinner and 5g lighter? Done! Sleek, elegant, thin, sexy, but no headphone jack.

Nobody makes a phone with the consumer's convenience and experience in mind anymore. They make things without microSD card slots to drive subscriptions to their cloud platform. Instead of selling me a $60 battery I can change myself, they parts lock all pieces of the phone. It's totally anti-consumer, and I don't understand why. If someone released a stylish flagship phone right now with headphones, microSD, good battery life, and snappy performance, they'd trade wireless earbud and cloud platform sales for straight market share. How is that not worth it?

Bad, non-consumer centric marketing forces poor changes.

I don't think so, the companies (mostly Apple), are making these changes and twisting them to make it sound presentable, but in reality, they're making it less usable for the consumer unless they pay more money. They continue to do this because people still support it by buying them each year. Plenty of people at my campus are Apple fanboys for life and upgrade to the newest releases each year. When Apple fucks their consumers and their consumers still purchase them, other technology companies follow behind because it's proven success.

When companies fuck you over, don't continue giving them money to fuck you again. This is easier said than done as it's more of a societal shift but let's say everybody holds off, or a good portion hold off and demand that the companies changes things up, then something may be done to get the point across.

This upcoming phone update I'm tempted to buy the fairphone 5 even if theres no upgradable sd slot or headphone jack because it's not like the google pixel will introduce it. I just hope CalyxOS supports it soon.

https://support.fairphone.com/... According to their site, you should still be able to upgrade storage space with a micro sd. Another recommendation is that if you do buy a fairphone dont buy the adapter from usb c to aux from them, ive bought 2 from them and they both broke within half a year.

That's all actually very good news. I must've missed that in the specs sheet. I guess the only thing fairphone doesn't have now is a headphone jack. I'm a bit more inclined to buy their products now. Really, the only thing that's holding me back is CalyxOS support. I know it's been supported on the FP4 and I hope it will be available for FP5 soon. I also live in the US of A so that adds additional complications.

Exactly.. I updated after 4 years of using OP7T to S23 only cause the updates ended (and were fcked up), battery (I swapped my for new one but still 5h sot vs 8h sot was really tempting), storage and cause I wanted smaller device.

Otherwise I could use OP7T for another 4 years.. Ok realisticly for 2 at least (cause I'd wanted new device..), but still the performance update is not that much mind blowing..

120hz vs 90hz I can feel, but not groundbreaking, responsivity is a bit faster (0.5 vs 0.3 second is not that groundbreaking either) and camera is the biggest update for me but also nothing revolutionary, definitely evolutionary, but not revolutionary.

The best new thing for me is better customizability of Samsung, which is funny cause that's why I bought OP7T 4 years ago, but Oneplus heavily fcked up.

Since the Pixel 1 I've been buying a new phone every four years. Honestly I prefer it that way. Saves money and the upgrades feel more meaningful. As long as the battery is good, you still get security updates, and the hardware is intact, what is the reason to upgrade beyond being told to consume?

Looking forward to the Pixel 8 next month, since my 4 is actually starting to show it's age.

I miss the formfactor of the 5 so much. Perfect size and symmetrical bezels. The rounded corners were comfortable in the palm.

Thankfully the rounded corners are returning but the phone is still too big IMO. They need to get to at least 6.1".

I have the 6a as I needed to replace the 5 due to a screen issue and it was cheaper to replace the phone than the screen.

Two cents on the headphone jack issue folks bring up all the time. The convenience of 3.5 mm is great and valid. Totally agree.

However, I use and own a lot of wired higher end headphones and a dongle DAC is just better audio quality than the 3.5mm jack. Let me explain.

3.5mm jacks means the phone's on board DAC is doing the work and outputting an analog stereo signal. You are stuck with whatever, typically sub-par, DAC is built into your phone. Yes, some phones have better DACs than others, but it is a challenge to sort out and is often not a priority for most manufacturers.

With type C dongle you can escape your phone's limitations and use dongles with audio features like fully balanced audio because the signal stays digital from your phone to the dongle. Personally, I'm a fan of 4.4 mm balanced connection, as most of my headphones will run balanced. This is something I could never do with 3.5mm alone.

DDHifi, XDUOO, ifi, etc makes some great 'audiophile' - dumb title but you know what I mean - DACs.

I often don't hear this side of the issue discussed.

The idea with the jack is convenience tho. Including the jack won't take much space and it's just convenient. You wanna take a quick phone call while doing stuff around the house, plug the headphones in and good to go, no worries about battery or connection loss. You still have the type C for the digital audio. A hybrid analog/SPDIF would be even cooler, some laptops and sound cards do it

From googling, it sound like the bends the phone gets when sitting on it can damage the main board and the connection to the sound chip fails. Was shocked the phone could have a hardware failure of that type. I have learned zero lessons and still keep my phone in my back pocket.

Anyhow, it was a great phone but just a bit too narrow. The keyboard was uncomfortable. I don't need these stupid supertall 20:9 stretched screens, but I need enough width to type. I miss 16:9 phones, my old Moto Z was the comfiest-typing phone screen ever.

Contract subsidies are kind of coming back in the form of "trade in bill credits.". Previously you'd sign a 2 year contract and they would subsidize your phone, however; I just got $800 of trade in credit at Verizon for a phone they normally give $150 for.

The catch, of course there are many... the bill credits are over 3 years, and in my case fully offset the cost of the monthly phone purchase price; if you leave you need to pay off the remaining balance, and if you upgrade you lose your credits. Also you need to be on an unlimited plus plan.

However; I now have a new phone with no additional monthly payments. The last Samsung I had made it 5 years, and the new one actually has a serviceable battery!

If you break your new phone, you can't fall back to your old one and you will have to pay over MSRP for a replacement if you buy it from your carrier. That's the real reason they want you to trade the old phone. That and to kill the resale market.

I ended up getting the S23 Ultra, (had to come out of pocket a bit), and if you get Samsung's Care+ insurance it's $8 a month, so basically $100 a year if something goes catastrophically wrong. I will probably carry that insurance for the first two years or so of owning the phone. Given I rely upon my phone for a ton of business, my home phone, social communication etc, it seems fairly reasonable as they claim to have 24 hour replacement.

I don't understand why we can't have water tight backs that use an O and screws, but I guess that would make it to easy to fix things, so lets use more glue.

I'm not really surprised, smartphones kinda hit this point of "good enough for most people's purposes" 3-4y ago and short of an actual reason to upgrade like the 4g-5g switchover there isn't a lot of incentive for most people to throw down $400-1k for a new phone every couple of years.

I would have happily kept my OnePlus 7T for a few more years if the network switchover didn't require new hardware.

Personally I don't need a faster smartphone at this point, if anything motivates me to buy a new one it's usually better radios, better battery runtime and better cameras. The rest of the gewgaws don't matter much for daily use.

Also I would add inflation went up, prices jumped. Meaning not so much free spending cash any more. People might have previously had the cash to update phone, just for sake of update even without it being necessary. Now days? People have way more important things they have to spend more money on.

This market stagnation was what got me to buy a Fold. Every 3-5 years of the same size slabs, just imperceptibly "faster". Then came something new finally. Same as my pixel 2xl, I'll have this till the battery or screen starts to go.

It seemed the last incentive they were trying to get people to upgrade was throwing as many cameras as possible on the back. Companies need to try and innovate again and the folding screens is at least one way of them trying something new. Prices have also climbed dramatically so I'm not surprised people are bothering to upgrade.

I hit fleaBay and bought a used 9 Pro. All I really wanted out of the upgrade were newer radios (5g + AX wifi) and better cameras. I think I paid around $350, if my track record holds I'll keep it for 2-3 years then do the same again for the same reasons. I've been halfway looking at a 10 Pro/T or an 11 model for better battery runtime (Snapdragon 888 is a bit of a battery hog for the performance) but I don't really have a reason to upgrade yet.

It's more tied to the change of the business model.

Phones used to be subsided by the plan and the 2 year contract lock in, so if you didn't upgrade every cycle you were effectively leaving money on the table.

This is why the market accelerated so quickly compared to any other class of hardware.

As the 2 year contract fell out of favor (thanks largely to T-Mobile), you had 2 year heavily discounted payment plans tied to device trade in that took their place, but these were opt-in as opposed to the previous model which was built in to every contract.

While the economy was strong, the depreciation on your current device and effectively FOMO on maximizing its trade in value kept the system driven at similar numbers.

But as purses have tightened, suddenly the outlay on increasingly expensive devices with lower trade in values for past devices is a racket people are opting out of.

It was never really about features as opposed to status and reup indicators. Most of the rest of the world has more like 3 year phone replacement cycles for the past decade, and have been fine with the same feature parity per model year as US phones.

I'm honestly surprised the 2 year thing kept going as long as it did.

My Huawei Mate 10 pro (2017) was the last phone that felt like an upgrade. Everything since then has been better in some respects, worse in others. Just a replacement for a phone that is physically too broken to be used any longer.

I don't think I'll ever spend โ‚ฌ1000 or more for a phone anymore, even though I could afford it. I'm just not willing to spend that much money on a phone that offers hardly anything new. Maybe if they finally make a fairphone with a decent camera, I would pay a premium for repairability so I can use it for more than 3 years before it inevitably falls apart...

I picked up a Pixel 6 for about three hundred. The last phone I had was a Moto One Action. I prefer the Moto for a lot of things but the irony is the final reason I had to get rid of it is the USB-C charging port was fucked. Of course the battery was very crap by then and the screen was cracked to hell too.

I really like that phone though. Lots of functions just by shaking it, like the flashlight came on when I tomahawk chopped it twice. Super handy. If I could have fixed it for a reasonable price I would have.

That USB-C thing made me laugh though. I've had to use iPhones for work a lot, and the one thing I really like was clicking in the lighting port to charge it. Never failed. On more than one android the USB-C gets wonky, where you have to tilt the cable to get the connectors to touch and stuff. Not bad, but not even as good as the old USB mini chargers.

I love Moto actions. The twist for camera, the shake for flashlight are both awesome. Too bad they don't seem to use AMOLED screens anymore. I'm on Pixel 6, but held onto my Moto Z, first Gen, for as long as I could.

I'd like netbooks to come back. That was a good idea (and sufficiently popular, and probably slaughtered due to some backstage pressure from Microsoft, cause those were often used with Linux, I even remember that some were sold with Linux).

netbooks

I use an 11 Macbook air as my casual device and I love it. It's also pre-glass screens so I've dropped it a few times (from a 1-2') and it hasn't shattered. It's using this device which has had me rethink my computer situation.

I've actually considered getting a small 11" netbook, putting Linux on it, and using it wherever a tablet would often be used.

I still have my gaming desktop, but I don't need all that power to play movies on a plane, connect to ODB II, or read woodworking plans in the shop.

... usually produced by something like Packard Bell, and though cheap, still too expensive for their build quality, and weaker than Raspberry Pi, and with problematic hardware (which matters for Linux use).

Still if not for the latter I'd buy one.

I have a Samsung note 20. I got it some time in 2021, I think. I only replaced it because my previous Note 20 fell out of it's mount on my motorcycle handlebar on the highway, and while I apparently have international calls, this doesn't mean the phone can be run over by an International.

Before I got the original ill-fated Samsung in 2021, I was using a Moto X4 that I bought in 2017. That one still works, but the battery dies fast, so I use it as a screen for a camera drone.

If I were to go buy the latest Samsung Note, I seriously doubt it would be noticeably better than my Note 20. I normally wouldn't bother to get a phone this nice, but I wanted to treat myself, just once.

We're at a point now where you don't need to upgrade every 6 months or a year. Phones work perfectly fine for 2 to even 5 years now with updates.

Micro updates such as slightly faster processing power or a slightly better camera is not appealing at all.

Foldables is where the next smartphone market is but the technology is way too young and they're mechanically fragile resulting in problems within only months of purchase.

Oh I have a foldable. Also the software sucks and they can't find reasons for the folding at all. Maybe the flip will have a better market but it messes with battery life, antenna signal and more for a product that yells that an app is incompatible or doesn't fit the screen right.

I know I'm in the early adopter tax but I could have actually done without this one as a techie

I've got a foldable and mine works fine, haven't ran into a single app that won't use the larger display. I find it super useful as the display is much easier to read and watch videos on. Zfold3

Occasionally being able to open a document or video on a larger screen is great but I get so many apps yelling at me to shutdown the app before it can load in a different format or bars on the edges open or missing text closed cause the screen is smaller.

Also what's with the home screens being different open or closed?

Maybe try Google Pixel or iPhones that have terms against pre-installing shit.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Canalys has some gruesome new numbers out for the North American smartphone market in Q2 2023, detailing what it's calling the "worst quarterly performance for over a decade."

Only a single company survived this quarter unscathed, and it's actually Google!

The biggest loss on the chart is actually "others," down 43 percent, likely representing the further consolidation of the Android market.

Canalys explains some of this by saying the low-end market "will continue to struggle as prepaid demand dwindles."

Despite the overall losses, Canalys says, "Apple and Samsung boosted their premium segment shipments with 25% and 23% growth respectively in Q2 2023."

Canalys expects a bit of a recovery in 2024, where it's projecting a 3 percent increase.

I did upgrade my phone this year... to an iPhone 13, which I can pay a few dollars a month to AT&T for. And I only did that because my XR's battery was dying. I would have been fine to keep it indefinitely. I see no good reason to upgrade and really, the only reason I had to was built-in obsolescence. A 5-year-old phone should not have a battery that goes to shit. Maybe 10 years old.

path: 0 3866192, hotness: undefined, score: 0, children: 8
Earthwormjim91 3 points 3 years ago

I mean, you could have just paid the $90 to have the battery replaced by Apple with an OEM battery and kept it for another 5 yearsโ€ฆ

Batteries are consumable items. They go bad. 5 years for a lithium battery that you cycle through at least once a day is good. Thatโ€™s 1825 charge cycles.

path: 0 3866192 3877389, hotness: undefined, score: 3, children: 6

I could have, or I could pay a couple of bucks a month for a new phone and not have to scrounge up $90.

path: 0 3866192 3877389 3877410, hotness: undefined, score: 1, children: 3

So it wasnโ€™t planned obsolescence then. You just wanted to upgrade rather than replace the battery and keep the phone you say had no reason to upgrade.

Some people Are very heavy users, and as such should expect a little higher maintenance costs.

I had my base iPhone 12 for 3 years and had 88% battery health before I gave it to my dad. I think thatโ€™s pretty good, and I used more than one full charge a day. Heโ€™ll have it at least another 2 years before needing a battery replacement.

Iโ€™ll have my 15 pro for probably 5 years before giving it off to him, though I expect to replace the battery once.

That's not planned obsolescence. Making lithium batteries that survive thousands of charges is just really, really hard. Physics only allows them to last so long. Five years is pretty good for a phone. Frankly, I think making a rechargeable battery that lasts all day and lasts 10 years in a passively-cooled phone is just impossible with our current technology.
