I just set up new PC for my grandparents that I imaged myself using the latest windows 11 iso from MS. It wouldn’t let me bypass the account require when I was offline. It just stalled at the “no network” screen and wouldn’t continue unless I connected the PC to a network.

I had to use the OOBE/BYPASSNRO or whatever the command was

Same here. There has to be no network whatsoever. No wifi, no wired connection.

You can completely cut out any internet access to the device (via the router), and it will still cry like baby and say that you need to use a Microsoft account.

There is absolutely no reason why disabling this needs to require a special keystroke let alone command.

But my reasons were primarily because I wanted to disable as much telemetry as possible and tweak other settings before putting it on a network.

Shift F10 just opens the command prompt. After that it's the name of a batch file in the oobe folder. (Out of box experience.) You can tab complete the name so you just have to remember the oobe part. The biggest annoyance is if you buy a laptop that is in S mode, you can't start command prompt to do this.

All it does is add a registry key, and reboot, but you would have to know how to do custom windows deployments to to create an image to skip it always.

Lol, right. Linux ain't even close to replacing windows - just look at the gaming issues that persist, or other compatibility issues.

It's great for specific use-case scenarios, but I'm not dealing with supporting friends and family when stuff doesn't work because I told them to install a Linux distro.

Besides, business doesn't have this issue - it's only on home (not Pro) installs, because for business we do all sorts of system management that would preclude this, even is MS tried to push it.

This just reflects how MS sees home users - there's no profit there (never has been, it's always been about getting people used to Windows at home, to capture the audience).

No one in my family is allowed to use Windows Home versions. They either buy pro when they get a new computer, or I get it for them.

My standard response to "just go Linux" :

I keep having to say this, as much as I like Linux for certain things, as a desktop it's still no competition to Windows, even with this awful shit going on.

As some background - I had my first UNIX class in about 1990. I wrote my first Fortran program on a Sperry Rand Univac (punched cards) in about 1985. Cobol was immediately after Fortran (wish I'd stuck with Cobol).

I run a Mint laptop. Power management is a joke. Configured as best as possible, walked in the other day and it was dead - as in battery at zero, won't even boot. Windows would never do this, unless you went out of your way to config power management to kill the battery (even then, to really kill it you have to boot to BIOS and let it sit, Windows will not let a battery get to zero).

There no way even possible via the GUI to config power management for things like low/critical battery conditions /actions.

There are many reasons why Linux doesn't compete with Windows on the desktop - this is just one glaring one.

Now let's look at Office. Open an Excel spreadsheet with tables in any app other than excel. Tables are something that's just a given in excel, takes 10 seconds to setup, and you get automatic sorting and filtering, with near-zero effort. The devs of open office refuse to support tables, saying "you should manage data in a proper database app". No, I'm not setting up a DB in an open-source competitor to Access. That's just too much effort for simple sorting and filtering tasks, and isn't realistically shareable with other people. I do this several times a day in excel.

Now there's that print monitor that's on by default, and can only be shut up by using a command line. Wtf? In the 21st century?

Networking... Yea, samba works, but how do you clear creds you used one time to connect to a share, even though you didn't say "save creds"? Oh, yea, command line again or go download an app to clear them for for you. Smh.

Oh, you have a wireless Logitech mouse? Linux won't even recognize it. You have to search for a solution and go find a download that makes it work. My brand new wireless mouse works on any version of windows since 2000, at the least, and would probably work on Win95.

Someone else said it better than me:

Every time I've installed Linux as my main OS (many, many times since I was younger), it gets to an eventual point where every single thing I want to do requires googling around to figure out problems. While it's gotten much better, I always ended up reinstalling Windows or using my work Mac. Like one day I turn it on and the monitor doesn't look right. So I installed twenty things, run some arbitrary collection of commands, and it works.... only it doesn't save my preferences.

So then I need to dig into .bashrc or .bash_profile (is bashrc even running? Hey let me investigate that first for 45 minutes) and get the command to run automatically.. but that doesn't work, so now I can't boot.. so I have to research (on my phone now, since the machine deathscreens me once the OS tries to load) how to fix that... then I am writing config lines for my specific monitor so it can access the native resolution... wait, does the config delimit by spaces, or by tabs?? anyway, it's been four hours, it's 3:00am and I'm like Bryan Cranston in that clip from Malcolm in the Middle where he has a car engine up in the air all because he tried to change a lightbulb.

And then I get a new monitor, and it happens all damn over again. Oh shit, I got a new mouse too, and the drivers aren't supported - great! I finally made it to Friday night and now that I have 12 minutes away from my insane 16 month old, I can't wait to search for some drivers so I can get the cursor acceleration disabled. Or enabled. Or configured? What was I even trying to do again? What led me to this?

I just can't do it anymore. People who understand it more than I will downvote and call me an idiot, but you can all kiss my ass because I refuse to do the computing equivalent of building a radio out of coconuts on a deserted island of ancient Linux forum posts because I want to have Spotify open on startup EVERY time and not just one time. I have tried to get into Linux as a main dev environment since 1997 and I've loved/liked/loathed it, in that order, every single time.

I respect the shit out of the many people who are far, far smarter than me who a) built this stuff, and 2) spend their free time making Windows/Mac stuff work on a Linux environment, but the part of me who liked to experiment with Linux has been shot and killed and left to rot in a ditch along the interstate.

Now I love Linux for my services: Proxmox, UnRAID, TrueNAS, containers for Syncthing, PiHole, Owncloud/NextCloud, CasaOS/Yuno, etc, etc. I even run a few Windows VM's on Linux (Proxmox) because that's better than running Linux VM's of a Windows server.

Linux is brilliant for this stuff. Just not brilliant for a desktop, let alone in a business environment.

Linux doesn't even use a common shell (which is a good thing in it's own way), and that's a massive barrier for users.

If it were 40 years ago, maybe Linux would've had a chance to beat MS, even then it would've required settling on a single GUI (which is arguably half of why Windows became a standard, the other half being a common API), a common build (so the same tools/utilities are always available), and a commitment to put usability for the inexperienced user first.

These are what MS did in the 1980's to make Windows attractive to the 3 groups who contend with desktops: developers, business management, end users.

All this without considering the systems management requirements of even an SMB with perhaps a dozen users (let alone an enterprise with tens of thousands).

My Logitech G503 Lightspeed wireless mouse works instantly on my computer. Plug and play. Running Pop!_OS.

Gaming works great in Steam and Lutris.

Can't speak for battery and power management, but I do have a laptop with Pop installed on it as well. Haven't had any troubles, but it's out of commission right now due to an unrelated hard drive cable issue.

Spot on about Excel, I suppose. I've never much liked libreoffice or Google sheets for tables.

Are you kidding? Windows does this all the time. There have been countless times when I've left work with a fully charged laptop, then bring it back the next day to literal zero charge without having used it. I no longer trust sleep or hibernate mode at all for anything longer than an hour. And I'm not the only one with this problem. My partner (with a different laptop) has had the same thing happen, and so have my colleges.

I've got some ideas about why and how it might happen; but kind of beside the point. The point is that it is not true that Windows would never let your battery drain to zero while the computer is not in use. It does do it. Often.

Had this issue for years over 2 machines.

One had some shit in the background the prevented standby.

Other was so simple it pissed me off.... .. the damn mouse jostling around in the laptop bag was walking it up.

I'm still going to point the finger at windows because 1) there should be a better tool for identifying what is keeping a system awake and 2) should be default for a mouse to not wake a portable machine who's lid is shut.

I agree with you. I'm a fairly new Linux User and I start to run into these issues too. I think Linux just lends itself to projects that require you to google. It's the endless fallacy of "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should"
However if we apply the average user use case: (A laptop to do light surfing, consuming media, and writing Emails) Linux can run (mostly) perfectly fine. (If you choose a reasonable Distro, not Arch). Personally I run Fedora with Gnome.(Realistically Ubuntu is a better choice for average users) Most major apps work via flatpacks and update centrally from the app store. They work out of the box. Firefox, Thunderbird, Only Office, Spotify what more does a Luser need?
Now granted one thing that does not work is legal streaming. No DRM Protection means no HD, High bit rate streaming. So you need to fall back to sailing the high seas. Power management works out of the box for example under Fedora. Never charges over 80% notifies me at 20% Sure having a better looking login screen, would be nice, but do I really care? Sure emulating a 20 year old Windows game would be cool but I can't expect to run that as is on Linux. Sure a better weather app in the notification bar would be great but I know that my local weather is never accurate anyway.

I'd say for most Luser cases Linux will work out, just don't make the mistake of thinking it's a proper workstation.

I personally think the key issues still holding Linux back are

  • Not installed on PCs on standard brick-and-mortar shops
  • Microsoft's tight grip on enterprises and businesses
  • Non availability of industry standard applications
  • Availability of choice, which creates choice paralysis for the user

I don't agree that there are no problems on Windows. There are different types of problems but users are so accustomed to them, they will go through more hoops to solve them, when it's trivial on Linux. We have to introduce Linux much early to users to create familiarity.

But you see you give up small and easy things which IF one wants are there on Windows, even if I decide to emylate NFS I can't do that on Linux . Don't get me started on using HDD with Linux , plug and check every app if it's available is that app ?? Whattttt i just want to plug it and use it via file browser in All apps without -f - u-c-k c

I came in to say bravo, Since day 1 on Lemmy i been hounded by Linux dude bros , whenever I say Linux is not possible I been down voted to hell.

Even as simple thing as putting a program in start-up is hassle and varies depending upon distribution, and I went on rabbit hole just like you said.

Even the friendlier(?) versions like pop os and zorin in 2024 and no where near to use ability as windows 95 is.

The worst thing is use of command/terminal , I simple just don't want to use it at all, but not possible to do that STILL in Linux and dude bros keep telling me this is essential and their grandparents are using mint. This is believable only if they surf Internet and not do anything extra at all, that too since flash is dead , cause I have first hand experienced that I had to play with multiple command lines and what nots just to get YouTube working on Linux .

Linux is not ready to be used in home setting not unless it simplifies further as much as windows does AND has lot ofnsoftwarws availability. Think of something and thwr is software for it on windows , hardly the case for Linux ANY DISTRO.

now we await on Lemmy , for Linux dude bros to come out and defend Linux with 4% usage and down votes.

The upshot of your comment with the current situation is: Windows users want someone to wipe their a*** for them and are increasingly OK with the wiping hand doing other things it feels like at the same time.

At least with Linux's rough paper, it's my own damn hand.

Even as simple thing as putting a program in start-up is hassle and varies depending upon distribution, and I went on rabbit hole just like you said.

If you want to start program on login(like on windows), then you need to use you DE's settngs GUI. If you want to start program on boot, then you need to enable startup script in your init.

So problems like in Windows are solved like in Windows.

and their grandparents are using mint.

My grandparents(and parents. and me.) are using Gentoo, but I recommend to people OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.

Linux has a lot of hardware problems, so the safest choice is always to do like the time I had a Hackintosh: buy hardware you already know it’s compatible.

But regarding making Linux easy for the average consumer, I don’t think it will ever be. The incentive just isn’t there. Even though some distros try to simplify things, there’s too many layers and different configs where problems can happen and not enough resources to handhold users through all the steps. Apple can only polish their operating system because they sell very expensive computers, so they actually make a profit from the average consumer.

In the end, it’s all about money and incentives, Linux philosophy was never to make things easy for the non computer savvy person. It could change, absolutely, with enough money, research, hardwork (most likely voluntary, which is scarce) and collaboration with other areas, such as good designers and UX people.

This just reflects how MS sees home users - there's no profit there (never has been, it's always been about getting people used to Windows at home, to capture the audience).

Yes, so buisnesses would have higher switching cost from it.

Power management is a joke. Configured as best as possible, walked in the other day and it was dead - as in battery at zero, won't even boot.

What are scaling governors, DVFS governors, does it have Energy Model enabled and do sensors work?

Since steam has come out with proton I've moved completely and haven't looked back. I'm very happy with my choice. I've also had a lot less problems running Linux in both a professional and personal setting for the last 15 years. My comment was directed at someone smart enough to know a work around with this windows bullshit. And my response stands. If you know how to do tech support and still run windows then I guess have fun with this nonsense. In my opinion windows has just gotten shittier and shittier and continues to take it out on the user's. I'm glad to be completely done with them.

Some apps actually run faster on Wine than on native Windows, but it's a bit a hit and miss. You should try them yourself.

Also, dual boot is usually the best solution to begin.

Near 100% since Wine isn't a hardware emulator. But it depends on how well the software is supported, and CAD has historically been a sore point (but it may be better these days).

Windows users should be outraged.

We're at a point where a company makes an operating system used by a majority of the population while they force you to use your personal online account to log in, and they record everything you do on screen and collect an obscene amount of other information about you.

Picture MS getting breached in a couple years. What would that look like for you, the individual? Do you really trust all these screenshots are also locally stored? I doubt it. If they are today, do you trust they always will be?

Before this is all over, MS will be charging users to extract their snapshots from a proprietary cloud-only one drive account. The recovery process will take about 3 hours, and involve scrolling through ai-authored help articles that don't lay out clearly and methodically how to access the old snapshots. The comments on the help articles will begin with "Hello sir, can you confirm that you have followed the steps at this link?". The link, before delivering you to an irrelevant solution, will shunt you to a landing page that forces you to log into your microsoft account before you can see the answer.

I can't help but feel the individual direct consequences to be like pretty small to the institutional risks.

Imagine China all of a sudden getting access to all the trade secrets of US companies that still ran MS. Imagine Russia gaining full access to all the government, health, educational data of every single US citizen. Or imagine something like the recent fuckup of google deleting the entire cloud of one financial institutions. Imagine MS to fuck up royally and all consumer facing computers in all banks to be broken for three weeks...

All of these are not immediately targeting the individual directly, but they can be extremely destructive to a nation or even globally as a whole.

Absolutely, however I think there is indifference or complacency in lay tech users. It might help open a few eyes if shown effects in peoples personal lives. For example, asking have you been getting obscene number of spam/robo-calls? That's because your info was either stolen or sold by the company's you shared it with. That would make the effect hit home better I think.

I remember when there was news that Facebook was listening to your conversations and suggesting ads when you logged in. Even if untrue it creeped people out, some even quitting Facebook entirely. Maybe something like that can happen with MS and they back off. Or better yet we legislate the shit out of tech companies, follow the EU way.

Obviously you have the same problem with trusting FOSS software distributions, but it's mitigated by things like Linus' Law and reproducible builds.

That being said, I personally use tiny11 VMs for certain non-critical things at home and work. I'd never use it for anything security related, or as my main OS, as there is a non-negligible chance that it's compromised (and there's basically no way of knowing).

This is just for Home edition, yeah? Pretty sure Professional still allows you to create offline accounts without a Microsoft account before joining a domain.

Last time I tried it let me create a local account, then about a week later I got called because Windows threw a full-screen blocker on boot saying a Microsoft account was required to continue with "I'll do it later" being greyed out. Oddly enough, ALT+F4 worked to close it and continue.

Ahah, no, I installed Professional edition a couple of months ago and I needed to do the OOBE/something-somethinNO to proceed with the install

Intel network card also helped because it didn't work out of the box and I really had no internal other than mobile

before joining a domain.

You do it essentially while joining the domain. If you hit the "work" option instead of "home" it immediately goes to a "sign into your domain" screen.

Huh? What if you're installing windows on a machine with no internet connection? Which is an entirely normal legitimate thing to do. It's not a requirement after all.

I have a number of machines that use a local account, they don't need a Microsoft account and will never be linked to one, it's unnecessary.

I had to do exactly this for a family friend in his 70s, it was a fucking nightmare. I think ultimately I caved and hotspotted it to my phone just long enough for it to be happy, and disconnected it while it was still loading the sign up page so it fell back to local account creation (at the time I didn't know about a@a or bypassnro)

For W10 you can still do offline installs with the media creation tool and telling it you dont have an internet connection, for W11 even enterprise users are all tied into autopilot, Intune MDM, and/or a microsoft account. I do not believe there is a method to install W11 without an internet connection and account. If there some some way to get the install tools to do that, I dont know what it is, and I do IT for a job...

Honestly, making the switch to linux full time is not that bad. Every tool, utility and program other than the most niche propriatary applications have a FOSS variant, and it is starting to sound like a bad relationship when people wait for MS to make a policy, change or product that isnt comedicly evil...

Just break up... If you need to talk at the hivemind of the internet for advice, we got ya.

  • It allows you to continue to the local account setup

The fact this is even necessary makes me want to shit a brick.

"Do you want to make an online account?" No. "Okay, please set up your local account."

That should be it. And honestly, even that's egregious to me. Signing into online bullshit should be opt-in, not opt-out. Thank goodness I don't use Windows anymore, finally wiped the last Windows machine in my house this past week.

Microsoft's insidious insistence on online accounts is the main reason I stopped using Windows. Even with a local Windows account, one time I accidentally opened Edge, and it started automatically importing browser info from Firefox and then syncing it to the Microsoft account that I was using for MS Office. From my point of view, that was some extreme bullshit. Too much to tolerate. I didn't want Edge to import anything from anywhere - no matter how 'convenient and easy' it is. and I certainly didn't want it to upload anything - no matter what assurances of 'privacy and security' are claimed. And until that point, I thought accounts for individual apps could be keep isolated to just that app.

They have to go through all these gymnastics because otherwise, there is no compelling reason for any given user to create a Microsoft account just to use their damn computer. So they resort to trickery, nagging, and now tacitly trying to force the issue. Most users don't know any better so they'll just click "ok" on whatever pops up in their faces when they first power on their new PC and take the first thing that's offered, which in this case is to sign up for a Microsoft account and tie your entire identity to it. Non-nerds don't know the difference between that and a local account, and that's dangerous.

It's become normalized that in order to use any given device or software you're expected to set up Yet Another Online Account, and that normalization is dangerous, too. I actively try to avoid such things but it's becoming harder and harder as time goes on.

That’s the thing, they have such a monopoly, they are sort of impervious to losing customers. That trope is long dead. The belief that a mega corp can be dethroned thru sales hasn’t been a thing for nearly 20 years. MS has a monopoly on personal computers. The only they don’t control is mobile (and likely never will). But when it comes to desktop and laptops, they are untouchable.

path: 0 10459485 10461814, hotness: undefined, score: 9, children: 2
GamingChairModel 6 points 2 years ago

they have such a monopoly

The major weakness in their desktop OS market dominance isn't from other desktop OSes. MacOS, ChromeOS, and traditional desktop Linux distros prevent Windows from being a total monopoly, but there's no doubt that Windows has quite a bit of market power.

The real competitive threat to Windows is from people who decide to not use a desktop computer at all. Between tablets and phones, there are a lot of people who no longer feel the need to have a laptop or desktop at all, for personal use.

And on that front, Windows being shittier than phones and tablets will cause people to slow down their upgrade cycle and maybe avoid using a traditional personal computer at all.

If you haven't found one you like yet, consider trying Debian. It's basically the same as Ubuntu, everything works the same on Debian as in Ubuntu but it's better because of less bloat.

Due to a slower update schedule, it may be worse at steam proton gaming than arch or something with a rolling release because that stuff heavily depends on how up to date your mesa or Nvidia drivers are. I can play everything except Starfield on my Ubuntu 22.04 laptop pretty much.

I can say that in the case of enterprise windows setups, the system caches your login credentials if it can't reach the domain controller, so that you can still log in even if you're not on the corporate network. Windows is unusable without Rufus. So glad I used it.

for my main computer, sure, fine, whatever. I'll sign into my Microsoft account, I don't mind. but my Plex/Minecraft server... maaaaaaannnn come the fuck on. I guess my server can just stay windows 10 for the next 20 years 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why in God's name are you running either of those things on windows?

I thought we weren't supposed to kink shame. Maybe /u/Raglesnarf is really into degradation and being dominated. Full on ball-busting, perhaps?

Counter-point; if someone is into degradation specifically, wouldn't they be happy to be kink shamed?

because it was super duper easy to setup and the overhead isn't all that bad for my use case. I am concerned whenever I decide to move/upgrade to something different since my hard drives are in a Windows "Storage pool" or whatever it's called

In all seriousness, if you're self hosting anything, please learn your way around Docker and Linux. It's a small time investment up front for huge payoffs. You'll get more value out of your hardware, and you'll have a system that's much more reliable (Windows was not built for 24/7 uptime).

In fairness, I've had several machines running versions of windows server with lots of uptime and zero stability issues. But the last time I ran a windows server is was advanced server 2003 so....

If all you're doing is plex and a minecraft server, look into proxmox or unraid.

Unraid is paid but very noob friendly compared to most others. It's also very flexible hardware wise.

I've heard great things about Free NAS. would unraid be similar to that?

I use TrueNAS and just checked: There is an available Minecraft app and also something called MineOS (seems to be a front end to make managing the server easier). My plex running through the same app ecosystem stays updated and hasn't failed me yet. I used to run the service separate from the NAS, but this is real nice.

FreeNAS and UnRaid probably have the same functionality.

They share similarities for sure. I've not used it though. I know unraid offers a 30 day testing license. Not sure about the others.

You can still bypass it by checking an option when using Rufus with the win11 iso

I guess that you still can unplug your lan cable and create a local account?

Nope, you have to do the bypass

This post specifically says you can't (without the bypass many won't understand how to do).

So Microsoft is essentially doing what Google and Apple have been doing for years and we think Microsoft are anti consumer because of this?

I think an email address is required to access their respective app stores, but is it actually required for creating an account?

No, you don't need an Apple ID to setup an Apple laptop or other iDevice.
