Supreme Court Conservatives Reinstate Texas’ Gerrymandered House Maps

In a brief order, the conservative majority argued, among other things, that the District Court had intervened to block the maps too close to next year’s midterm election.

Eleven months away is too close to the next election for these clowns.

No no, dont even give it that much dignity. The complainants are not asking to "block the map" too close (11 months) to elections. They are asking that the map not be illicit, unethically changed 5 years early, based off the explicit public request of the President who is not meant to have power over state election matters, with the explicitly stated intent of gerrymandering out more seats for Republicans that they "deserve" than they otherwise would have won, only 15ish months to the elections (which is apparently plenty of time). Their "reasoning" doesn't make sense because it's not reasoning. It's blatant full chested support of voter suppression/disenfranchisement to bolster their party and their autocratic President. They're so full of shit you could smell them talking from the next room over. Fuck those lying, cheating, corrupt, un-American, fascist cunts.

I 100% blame the Democratic party for this. They've been assisting the Republicans in their efforts to create this court for the last 40 years. Thomas should never have been confirmed to the court and Ruth Bader Ginsberg hung on at a time when she should have left while the "liberal" dems controlled both the presidency and the Senate and could easily have replaced her with a(n at least mostly) liberal justice.

The more I learn about things like this, the more I start to think that any quorum-based governance (e.g. democracy) is not just a scheme to balance radical differences of opinion, but to average out adverse and dysfunctional psychology. This, of course, has broken down somewhat, due to forces that keep selecting for more psycopathy than not.

It’s also frustrating that they let a seat be stolen.

McConnell invents a rule out of whole cloth and blocks an appointment.

The Dems could have played hard ball, they could have gone with the line that the senate was fulfilling its role of advising and consenting by not holding a vote. They want it to be read as a rejection, make them hold a vote, say that no vote means they are fine with it.

Republicans exceed their powers every time they have them to reshape this country to their vision. Democrats refuse to use the full scope of their power to accomplish anything.

Repeat ad nauseam.

I'm inclined to agree, but I've seen signs of potential unrest.

A household that has been decades gun free just got their sixth gun this year and a lot of ammo. Specifically citing a potential to stand their ground or die trying. We are talking about people who have lived 60 years without so much as a traffic ticket, never protesting anything, generally going along with things, now they they armed for talking a stand.

Another mild mannered colleague that has been super peaceful and moderate is similarly talking about how "we" might have to violently fight. No idea what prep he might do, but his was the last voice I expected to hear say that.

If people I've known to be very even keeled and moderate for decades are getting this close, I can't imagine how close others are...

I suppose we've been seeing the cracks start with two attempted trump assassinations and the Charlie Kirk assassination...

If it's too close to the election they need to approve a bill through legislature that changes need to happen before a specific number of days before an election, otherwise they are just legislating from the bench pretending it's legal. Which is obviously the case here because they can't argue justifications for their racist bullshit in an open forum. "The government can break the law whenever it wants, what are you going to do about it" seems to be the SC opinion here.

Redistricting unrelated to a change in the number of seats should be banned.

But if we are going to allow them, they should not be allowed to take effect until the following election cycle. This would give the court time to review the maps as well as allow the voters to have input prior to the change.

Of course. It was a given that that was what they were going to do, because they're entirely corrupt and compromised, entirely without integrity, principles, honor or legitimacy and driven solely by a determination to serve the interests of Trump and the oligarchs.

The way that special election in Tennessee went, instead of picking up five seats, they're liable to only be left with five seats (after all, you can't grab more districts without weakening your hold on others).

Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!
