I would more expect PETA to unironically tell someone off for calling a person a type of animal as an insult.
Ethical treatment of animals - people excluded

as they should
Yeah that's real iguana behavior.
Your comment is just trying to cause trouble. There is no extra context. Find something better to do dude. Insinuating that PETA is bad like the animal farming industry is just sad and pathetic.
PETA euthanizes animals because there are simply too many to house and feed. At least they offer a relatively painless death, compared to other methods commonly employed.

I've been seeing vegan defenders get upvoted in recent time on lemmy, did something change? I remember vegans getting quite negative feedback a few months ago only
The way you ask this makes me think you are a troll that wants to pick a fight.
Just in case you are not a troll: "vegan defenders" and "vegans" are no homogenous groups. There are a lot of different individuals that are vegan. And they do this for a bunch of different reasons.
Also your "vegan defenders": Defending against what? This implies that there are people who think veganism should be eradicated. This would be an extremly stupid opinion to have. You don't have to be vegan yourself but at least let other people live their life.
I honestly was being a bit of an ass for no reason, I do apologise. I'm a vegan myself, but only converted a few months ago. I'm just now depressed when I see how negatively people comment on anything vegan online, and spread misinfo frequently. Also I should've said "vegan-ism defenders"
People get paid a salary by meat/dairy industries to go online and astroturf against veganism. Its just part of being vegan online
FWIW I've come across multiple "PETA is the punchline" memes on Lemmy over the past few days, after having seen none that I remember. Not to jump to conclusions or claim conspiracy but I had already noted it to myself earlier today. I concur, the way some people approach the subject can be very depressing.
"I want to cook with you"
"No, I meant as an ingredient. Sorry, English isn't my first language"
"you look ravishing"
"why thank you"
"no i want to cook you and eat you. baste yourself with this for the next 30 minutes while i get the oven right"
Oh there's fresh rosemary on everyone here we all got bushes of it.
Not for long.
May I introduce you to Rotenburg Cannibal?
Humans are literally animals. Most are nothing more than that.
What are the ones who are something more than that? What are they?
People.
Most animals are insects =)
(About 10 quintillion, apparently: https://www.si.edu/spotlight/buginfo/bugnos )
Hello Clarisse....
Gentle reminder that the intellectual distance between an average human and a cow is smaller than it is between the average human and anyone who isn’t a total fucking idiot.
The fact that you think this has any bearing on what I said underscores my point.
PETA can only take the easy and lame options, which is why they went after my mom
Op: Makes post about PETA
Godric: OH GOD I HAVE TO BE OFFENDED ABOUT VEGANS
everyone else: Who the fuck said anything about Vegans?!
Vegans will have history side with them. However, farming and pastoralism is a way of life for many people. It's a job passed down from generation to generation. It's one of the world's oldest job. Unlike fossil fuels where there is no sentimental attachment and we can tell people to reskill, farming isn't. Some cultures and communities centre their identity to farming and pastoralism. How do we convince farmers and herders to give up the practice because it is extremely damaging not just to the environment, but to the entire human species?
Even though farmers do worry about the climate change making seasons becoming less predictable and yields becoming less productive, they are also the same people who complain and felt hindered by climate change policies, so they vote for the right wing parties that provide easy answer band aid solutions, but have far more dire and longer term consequences.
The problem is capitalism Fuck meat industry
Blame capitalism as much as we want, but in this case it isn't some nebulous boogeyman. Who are the people supporting capitalism? Who are the people selling meat to the meat industry? The same people who I am talking about. There is naïveté that farmers don't have a hand in exacerbating climate change. Holistically, we are all to blame.
I stopped eating almost any beef after discovering the cute cow gifs subreddit. They can be so puppy like! They're also huge methane machines and having fewer cows would be good for the environment.
On the other hand, I crave a good pot roast maybe once a year.
Edit: and I can name my mother's favorite childhood cow and the cow my grandpa let me name because we shared a birthday.
Cows when young are absolutely puppy like. We had a pet calf when I was a kid named Softy. My stepmom insisted we buy him and bring him home when we visited a rural county fair because he was so cute. He ended up thinking that he was one of our dogs for a while, even played fetch (poorly heh). Once he got big (and admittedly mean as hell), someone ended up stealing him from his pasture while we were away for the day. Poor Softy.
Maybe we should have a specific holiday like Thanksgiving but for cows. I vote for St Patrick's Day. Beyond meat and black beans are cool and good but you can pry corned beef out of my cold dead fingers.
how about labor day or memorial day? they are typically good grilling/smoking/barbecue holidays, and i could throw on a brisket or something
We should eat snakes on St. Patricks.
I unfortunately like beef too much. But I know the impact the meat industry has and try to reduce my intake. I was down to two meals with meat a month before I got a job that wouldn't let me be picky.
I, for one, think it's great that PETA is branching out and disappointing somebody else's parents for a change.
That was...well done.
I actually have reduced my beef consumption quite a bit. More for my personal health reasons than any other reason though.
Cow hugging therapy exists actually.
Buddy get yourself a partner!
I'll make that a post give me a sec
funny thing the sea sherperds founder left peta, because they wernt aggressive enough with thier eco-activisim, im guessing they are getting there.
Hitting a disingenuous reply guy with a lazy zinger: Based
Hitting a disingenuous reply guy with a lazy zinger when you're an animal rights org: Cringe, loathsome, objectionable
If this is real... I really don't see how this guy thought this quip would work out. Even without the funny Mum joke, they could have just responded with any name.
They respond "Daisy" what's he going say now? How's he going to disprove that?
Besides taking themselves too seriously, they also give vegetarianism and the concept of animal welfare a bad name.
I'd rather put my money to PAWS than a religious cult.
PETA euthanizes thousands of animals per year according to Google.
PETA euthanized 2,471 animals in 2023 and 2,213 in 2024 at its Virginia shelter, according to reports filed with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS).
PETA operates a kill shelter of last resort in Virginia, where they take in dogs who were next up to be euthanized at other kill shelters to make one more last ditch effort at addressing their issues and finding them homes. This is a service that would not exist if not for PETA, but since they're a last resort their success numbers are very low, like less than 40%. That amounts to hundreds of animals saved every year, but that hasn't stopped animal ag from taking the euthanasia totals out of context for years.
There's lots of information about the Norfolk shelter online for those willing to fact check.
That ain't enough. They go to schools and try to convert kids.
Fun fact, PETA kills upwards of 90% of the animals they claim to rescue.
Their director makes $147k salary, Sr VP makes $142k, VP makes $126k, and the Pres makes $36,999.
That is notably a lot less than, for example, ASPCA's executives who make hundreds of thousands up to $1,203,267 made by Matt Berdshadker in 2023, but on the other hand ASPCA has strict rules against Euthanasia except for circumstances that make the animal aggressive, suffering, of completely unadoptable.
The ASPCA typically has a lower euthanasia rate than PETA because it often employs more selective admission policies, focusing on adopting out animals rather than accepting all animals regardless of their condition. In contrast, PETA operates as an open-admission shelter, which means it takes in all animals, leading to higher euthanasia rates due to the number of unadoptable or severely ill animals it receives.
You should remember, it is outlined two comments up this chain.
"Focusing on adopting out animals" which results in >90% fatality? I would laugh but that's just not funny. The reason PETAs kill count is so high is because they fundamentally don't believe in livestock or owning pets, they see killing dogs, cats, and horses as a mercy.
You likely fell victim to propaganda from the animal imdustry:
Whether or not there is a front group named such doesn't argue the fact at all.
Thats like claiming animal rights activists are propoganda because theres a group named "swine are tortured".
Ok. You didn't read the article, did you?
I clicked your link, despite never having heard of sourcewatch, and it says there exists a propaganda group, which I have never heard of, sharing the same factual information as I have here.
I'm a wholehearted supporter of animal welfare, but I disagree with the fundamentals of PETA murdering every pet they get their hands on.
Wow, a lot of peta hate today on lemmy. I take it they said something that hurt, or are we just putting the left in its place again?
Yeah, that’ll show her…
PETA is basically just a concern trolling organization. Their version of animal welfare is to murder animals that come into their shelters.
Also, it's hilarious to watch them defend themselves and try to attack a group of people that ACTUALLY CARES FOR ANIMALS instead of just playing at rule changes (and murdering animals out in their care).
PETA can get fucked with the business end of a rusty rake.
Slow down they already said there's a lot of PETA hate on Lemmy today they didn't ask anyone to prove it.
They picked a fight with Umamusume (tw: a bit gory).
Even if I were vegan, I wouldn't want to be associated with PETA.
The devs should add a human-inspired character to the game, give it a shirt vaguely resembling the PETA lego, and make it have the worst stats out of all the characters
If there's ever an opportunity for someone to copy Edmund McMillen with how he made fun of PETA with their Tofu Boy parody, it would be this.
Only if you have to put down the PETA person whenever they lose a race or mildly injure themselves
Because PETA is a bastard of an organization.

I don’t think this is real, mostly because I don’t think PETA has a sense of humor. I don’t think they’re capable of funny.
