‘The most bitter news’: Iran reels as more than 80 children reportedly killed in school bombing

8 months ago by MicroWave to c/world

The building appears to be among many devastated in Trump’s ‘major combat operations’ as long expected attacks arrive

Iran’s parents had just dropped their children off for class on Saturday morning when they found themselves racing back to school gates, as bombs began to fall across the country in a joint US-Israel attack.

At one elementary school, according to Iran’s state-controlled media, they arrived to find devastation. At least 80 children had been killed in the strike on Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in Minab, southern Iran, the IRNA news agency reported, with dozens more unaccounted for.

In one video circulating on social media, purportedly showing the immediate aftermath of the strike, smoke rises from the burnt-out walls, and debris lies spread across the road. Hundreds of onlookers gathered at the site, some in obvious distress. Screams can be heard in the background. The report of the bombing, its death toll and the video’s source could not immediately be independently verified by the Guardian. Persian factchecking service Factnameh was able to cross-reference the video with other photographs of the school site, and concluded that the video was authentic. Reuters said it had also verified the footage as being from the school.

God fucking damnit, so fucking frustrating. Another 30+ years of "terrorists" because people will avenge war crimes committed by the US. This is maddening.

Another 30+ years of “terrorists”

We were never going to hear the end of "Muslim Terrorist" rhetoric, because it was instrumental in justifying our dominion over the region.

There isn't going to be another 9/11. We're well past the point of needing a causa belli for this kind of war. It'll just be ICE goons murdering parents in front of crying children and CNN talking heads explaining how we're safer because of it.

Another 30+ years of “terrorists”

America claims its attacks are to stop 'terrorists', but it's exactly those actions that are creating 'terrorists'. And they're fully justified in becoming 'terrorists' imo.

If I lived in Iran, I'd certainly want revenge for this.

(here I'm using the word terrorist to mean 'enemy of Americas administration', as that's what America has turned that word into)

Prior to this attack, as well as the bunker busters dropped last year: I do not believe Iran is/was creating nuclear weapons.

Since these two attacks however, I believe they'd be justified in seeking such weapons simply because America has proven over and over that no nation is safe without them.

In short; I don't think they are/were, but I do think they should be in response. As much as I don't like nuclear proliferation, I'm much much more against deliberately killing innocents, particularly children.

Perhaps I'd have a different opinion if America/Israel struck military targets; but they didn't. They struck homes, schools, and other civilians.

America is truly a Terrorist State, if not just a lap dog of Israel's genocidal regime.

it’s exactly those actions that are creating ‘terrorists’

Even this hasn't born out. We're not seeing waves of terrorism on US soil by foreigners or radicalized domestics.

We're seeing police brutality by state officials aimed anyone who "looks like a terrorist", with some spycops bullshit to entrap a few useful idiots along the way.

Perhaps I’d have a different opinion if America/Israel struck military targets;

They're dismantling the ability of the Iranian state to defend it's sovereignty so they can bomb and assassinate locals with impunity.

They're also randomly killing civilians, because these military strikes aren't as precise or informed as the leadership wants you to believe

Yes, this is exactly what I was thinking. All suicide bombers need to do is say "this was for those schoolgirls" and it's kind of hard to disagree with them.

The problem is that the people committing these atrocities face no legal justice, so it's up to vigilantes to do it instead.

I tried fully switching to Lemmy, but the content was lacking. Sure, you got communities for everything, but they are pretty much dead.

For example on r/Nvidia I immediately see news about new driver updates and the changelogs. On Lemmy it's dead.

There is a strategic purpose...

They don't want peace, even if that's because they won.

They want a constant war as an excuse for why they can be the only ones in power.

Killing a bunch of kids, makes sure the other side won't surrender. Even if the government does, you can claim all the people who want to kill your for killing kids are terrorists, and that they didn't surrender.

Which makes it even worse.

The school wasn't targeted, dum dum. There was a military building very close to the school and despite what you see in the movies, most missiles launched in wars aren't all that perfect at hitting their intended target.

I'm not defending Trump or Israel or the strikes. I'm just defending against the ignorance if you spreading misinformation that wouldn't even make sense to do intentionally to begin with. Trump regime wanted to make sure Israel struck first because they thought it would look better that way to US voters. You think he intentionally wanted the flak from bombing a grade school?

That was my first thought but the BBC are reporting the school was ~600m from the IRGC base which is well beyond the CEP of modern guided munitions (even if they lose GPS signal, JDAMs should have a CEP of <= 30m on inertial guidance alone). So I dunno, catastrophic intelligence failure or a result of an attempted interception seem to be the leading theories that I can see now.

I can see incompetence, some sort of missile failure, or Iranian defense having something to do with it. There's no purposeful reason to intentionally hit a single grade school. At least not from the US. It would be counter to anything Trumpet would want. I could only see it as an open possibility from Israel if they wanted to intentionally prolong the war in order to slaughter Iranians by enraging them to make them not want to turn against their current government as much.

We live with it by having gun laws which have prevented the rash of mass shootings you've had, and maintaining foreign aid programs to the countries around us, and many further away.

Yes, we trade with you, and China, and Israel, and everyone we can, because trade historically opens up opportunities for diplomacy and allows leverage for achieving human rights goals. We are part of the greater US empire, yes indeed, we've been too close to the US in the past. But when we found that our special forces had killed civilians in Afghanistan, for example, it resulted in national scandal and ongoing reform, inquiry, etc. In the US that's just the norm.

We do not participate in US military actions that may result in civilian deaths. We do not refuel your planes when they do that, for example.

We are sitting over here, trying to be friends, while being ever more horrified with your country and trying to remember the good times.

The pronoun 'you' doesn't mean you specifically; how can you tell it wasn't about 'you' specifically?

Because they didn't change the subject to you specifically, of course. The 'you' is a pronoun replacing "The United States Military", "USAF" "US and Israeli combined forces", etc.; the subject is who the 'you' is referring to, not actually you the person.

The pronoun is used in English to avoid having to specifically refer to the subject by name over and over.

Now, go forth, and SIN NO MORE

because the military convinced everyone their bombs are super precise, but in reality they have a 20% hit rate on average where a "hit" is within the radius of 250 yards (~230 meters)

So this could've been a "direct accurate hit", statistically speaking, on the actual target which was as far away as being on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge or a "very near miss" at a distance of laying the empire state building on its side

While it was immensely piss weak, Albo walked the usual line of not pissing off MAGA while not actually whole-heartedly agreeing with them. He stated that Australia supports US efforts to stop Iran's nuclear program, but did not actually support the strikes. It's the Penny Wong approach, "don't get Trump's attention, he might forget we exist" that they've been following the whole time.

Didn't oppose them either. See? Pissweak. But so far we've avoided the pedo's wrath while not being forced to actually materially support US brutality or being slapped by China. So it's working.

For anyone else reading this, FG_3479 has other posts promoting deportation and suggesting some immigrants are simply "wired for crime".

I don't think there's any need to engage with someone who has such a clear absence of compassion or humanity.

All of mine are sadly in lock step with the asshole in chief. Also usually have phone lines disconnected not that they'd even care if constituents called or contacted them

I agree. Criticism of bad dems is not the same as supporting trump, it's the only way we can possibly recover from trumpism

A community for discussing events around the World

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.

Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
