Politicians will be happy to take bribes regardless of what they earn.
Make Congress Earn Average American Wage.
5 days ago by sanitation to c/workreform
I’ll never get over how cheap it is to buy politicians. They make so much money, then they can be made to vote for a genocide for $3000.
It's not just about how much they get, it's also about how much their opponents don't get.
I think it's more to do with influence. They gain the favor of a large business with access to basically infinite money which gives them a whole lot more power behind them
This is the way, and they aren't allowed to buy any stocks, only ETF's
Nope, ETFs are too flexible for them. Only indexed mutual funds for members of Congress. Can't have them selling off their ETFs before a committee meeting is over and the information isn't public.
I say they should only be allowed Thrift Savings Plan funds.
I wouldn't even let them have that. They are there to help the population, not the economy (corporations).
Any hard measures comes with a drop of their personal wealth the moment they are investing.
Index funds should be fine then, even Bernie Sanders has Index funds. Smart people will want to invest.
They can have a retirement plan, like anyone else. There needs to be a federal law (or amendment) requiring any elected or politically appointed individual to put assets into a blind trust. And they can’t just name their kid(s) as temporary custodians of their assets. Any assets you owned the 2-years prior to running are placed in a trust unless they were sold to a third party.
Or even if you take the bribery angle out of it, the less politicians earn, the less it incentivizes working class people from going into government because they need the money. The net result is you end up ruled by the wealthy (including those who will advocate for pay decreases for congresspeople, which just worsens the problem).
It's not, which is why it's not a valid solution.
Also low compensation makes it nearly impossible for the average person to run an office, live in DC, and maintain a home in their home district.
I'd be okay if they recieved some kind of voucher or stipend that can only be used on a lease in DC and office necessities. Just to make up the difference
Just build dorms for Congress. There are only around 540 of them, including the non-voting members from PR and DC.
You could make a very nice apartment building for Congress for less than we spend on a lot of other shit. Remove all the extra costs for maintaining two residencies. Travel is already an extra stipend. So is food.
Or that you just make politics into something only for the independently wealthy. This is especially true at the state and local level where positions are often part time. The result is often those with the power to make their own schedules (landlords, lawyers, trust fund kids, etc.) make up a disproportionate amount of elected officials. You'll get some people who are passionate enough to give up the rest of their lives, but not enough.
The biggest argument against it is they need to maintain 2 residences and travel back and forth from their district to DC. If they're not paid enough to do that, only the wealthy and corrupt could ever be in congress.
Yeah, but they're already being bribed at this point.
The solution?
Prison for bribes. No parole. Enforce it.
But the usual rational response is, if what they earn is never enough for the blind pursuit of more, than they will always, "make less" in their minds and justify abuse of their positions.
This city needs an enema...
So you set the congressional pay at a high level, and ban all other sources of income. Any securities must be placed in a blind trust for the duration of service.
"High level" is the problem. It's a subjective number. You're going in wrong direction. Make it an objectively low number, maybe average full time salary in their state with potential to hit performance bonuses based on a number of measurable things that help their constituents.
Their pay needs to be linked to their performance in office and yes, a separate matter, but there needs to be tight regulation (and oversight with enforcement) for monitoring their wealth before, during and for a period after serving in office.
My argument is, what am I supposed to be entertained by, if the number of USian political posts is brought down to zero?
Median is a better choice as its less affected by outliers.
The mean average is the amount you compute by putting all the money that is earned in a big pot and dividing it up evenly amongst everyone.
Median is where you find the single most average person and ask them how much they make.
Median gives them an incentive to improve the income of the average American. Mean average gives an incentive to increase national wealth regardless of who's hands its in, and an incentive to decrease the population. That is not a good incentive.
But also keep in mind congress members are local representatives. They need to be in DC while in session, and in their state or district at other times to be available to their constituents. The job requires maintaining two households, so they should earn enough for that. Unless we provide them college dorm level mandatory housing in the capital. Then median alone is enough.
I get that you're trying to be accurate, and I respect that.
Let's use the mean, and eliminate the top and bottom 1% of earners. Which would put Congress' salary between 57,000 and 61,000
Using the median gives them a salary of 87,500 dollars.
That top 1% is a real motherfucker.
$87,500 is the median household income.
Median personal income (income of all persons 15+ with any amount of income) is $46,960.
For the bottom 1%, I assume this includes the unemployed as making $0?
And for the billionaire class, if we are talking AGI here (which I assume we are) I’m guessing they have some entirely normal AGI. If they are paying anything on their actual wealth it’s probably through some kind of capital gains tax, or hidden in some trust or shell corporation.
So before eliminating top 1% and bottom 1%, we might want to clarify those items, as the “average” worker will mainly just have a non-zero AGI they are taxed on.
Eliminating the top 1% of earners is a good policy I support, but I don't think it makes sense as a way to calculate averages.
Though your proposal might work now, in the fullness of time things will change, and the 1% may not be the right number. I don't think you can rely on governments to update numbers promptly. There are places in England that have fines in law defined in denominations that no longer exist. You can't rely on governments keep things up to date.
But your doesn't address the underlying problems with using the arethmetic mean. It seems like you're just searching for justification to pay people you don't like less.
I believe everyone should be able to live comfortably, and well designed incentive systems are effective at shaping behavior. Median is better on both fronts.
It's designed to be uncomfortable until the lowest earners in the country are able to approach comfortability themselves. The whole point is to tie people who make decisions for the rest of us to the consequences of them. It's not about inflicting harm, it's about inflicting consequences, which may be good or bad.
We want a rising tide.
Then tie it to the lowest earners. You can pick a lower percentile using the same methodology as finding the median.
Adding fixed percentage adjustments to the mean is not a good way of going about it.
Might be unpopular be politicians should actually be paid a lot. You want to attract actually skilled and capable people after all
But it should also be there only source of income, no speaking gigs, no stock trades, no side business
One of the reasons a lot of government positions track if you have debts is that propensity to financial burdens make politicians more suceptible to corruption.
If you pay them less, they are actually going to be more easily bribed.
If you pay them less, they are actually going to be more easily bribed.
If you keep the same people in office, then yeah. I wonder who else would be up for the job if the pay was lower. Hopefully more Mamdanis.
Nah, it'll be independently wealthy trust fund kids that don't need to rely on a paycheck to pay rent, but have a trust that is valued based on policy.
Politicians should be some of the highest paid people in the country. I wouldn't get out of bed for 70k today, that was my paycheck for my first professional job. Now perhaps you don't want me as a politician, but...
I’d agree with you except we see politicians selling out for even tiny amounts while having tens of millions in the bank. If you’re willing to sell the food out of the mouths of the poor for $2,500 and you’ve got 12 mil in the bank your inherently corrupt and having a big paycheck won’t change that. They have billionaire brain rot, number go up syndrome, as long as number goes up that’s all that matters no matter how much they are given or have.
Live in Missouri. Our state legislature liked to for years vote down a pay raise for themselves. They made sure to stand up and wave "Look at how good we're doing."
If I wanted to run for legislature, I would have had to taken a cut in pay and I am definitely not on the top 50% of the state, much less the country.
I think it is much more important what they are using that skill for.
I have always heard people make this argument, and since it's Great British Bake-off time, I'll use it as the example.
There's no prize, and the pay per episode is fairly minimal. Less than $500/episode for contestants. Plus, they get ~$2000 stipend for ingredients. On the fly converting pounds to dollars, so these are guesstimates.
What that means is that Great British Bake-off does not find the best home baker in Britain, it finds the best baker who can afford to take time off to be on the show. If you can afford to miss school, work, or being a parent for 12 weeks, you can't compete.
Same applies here.
If you can't afford to live on the salary, you'll only get people in office who don't need the salary. We already get that to some extent with campaigning costs. This could make it worse. The barrier of entry is higher.
Instead, we need a performance review with real consequences other than "Guess I don't get re-elected, but I still get a book deal."
I have always thought it should be twice the average median income of the state they represent.
But you bring up much larger issues. There are so many bars to running for office that make it so much easier for capital holders. I say people who hold capital should be barred from public office. I will leave the exact definition of "holding capital" up to the reader.
No.
The only reform we need is to take money out of politics.
If you get X number of people to sign your petition, you get y dollars to spend on a campaign. The spending is well monitored, so the candidate can't buy themselves a Lambo and call it a legit expense.
What's interesting is that a candidate could rent, lease, or buy a Lamborghini as part of their campaign. That's perfectly legal!
The restriction is that they can only use that vehicle for traveling to/from campaign events. Since this is highly impractical and a waste of precious campaign funds, that doesn't usually happen.
Another interesting fact is that candidates can get reimbursement from their campaign funds for miles traveled in their personal vehicles (when campaigning).
Getting paid mileage is normal for a lot of corporate jobs. Not my job these days, but many jobs.
Yeah renting a luxury car would be a weird choice, but nothing described is that weird from a practical sense.
Honestly if a job is having you use your personal vehicle and isn't reimbursing you you shouldn't do it.
Also if you don't allow basic reimbursement then you severely limit the ability for a normal person to run for office. Making it much easier for a wealthy person to run comparatively
Just checking the room here, y'all know that Congress doesn't control things like private pensions, 401Ks, or average wages, right? You're blaming Congress for the blight of capitalism.
They also don't take that large of a salary. The actual issue is that they are allowed to do insider trading and make an undeserved fortune investing...
But pretending that all of these problems are just problems with how the laws are written is just ignoring the actual source of these problems.
"y’all know that Congress doesn’t control things like private pensions, 401Ks, or average wages, right?"
This is wrong on so many levels. Let's start with this: Who made pensions and regulates them? Hmmmmmm
Even then it's about who is enforcing or checking it.
All this inside trading is supposedly illegal to be doing while in Congress but there it be happening.
No one blinks.
And a president claiming to go for third term.
And people are fearing this as an actual threat that could happen.
So who is pumping the brakes here? Looks like a whole lotta ppl going "well it looks good on paper" and then doing a whole lotta nothing after waving said paper around.
Private pensions is in fact something that has frequently been legislated on
And getting paid $250k for being a "guest speaker" sonewhere when it's really just a bribe. Even if congress weren't paid any salary they would still make bank from other sources of revenue.
Its like how DJT took a "$1 presidential salary" or whatever but has made billions doing other things.
Always fascinates me that the knee jerk solution to 'government service sucks' is 'pay the service providers less.'
I like the idea of tying congressional compensation to median or minimum wage, so they're motivated to improve that statistic (although Goodhart's law), but it's got to be enough to compete with other jobs with similar level of responsibility & authority. Median income jobs include K-8 teachers, tax prep, social work, & occupational safety; congress is basically the country's board of directors, and S&P 500 directors average around $300k, or 4.5x median.
The real problem with congress is it's so easy to funnel nearly unlimited money to politicians' control - it may not be salary, and there may be restrictions, but campaign donations provide an awful lot of opportunities for diversion. Massive campaign & campaign finance reforms, in ways that would probably set SCOTUS into a rage, be a real step toward making congress more accountable to the 90%.
Always fascinates me that the knee jerk solution to 'government service sucks' is 'pay the service providers less.'
Congresspeople are not the service providers. The various agencies are the service providers. Congress controls the pay to those providers.
Nobody here has asked for the service providers to take a pay cut. OP is asking for Congress to take a pay cut until the service providers under their control are providing a higher level of service.
Congress's report card is the well-being of the public. In the subject of "Financial Wellness", their grade is "$66,621".
They aren't being asked for a pay cut. When they improve their grade to "$174,000", they will be entitled to their current pay. When they raise it to "$250,000", they will be entitled to a substantial raise. It's only a pay cut if they insist on causing harm.
Does this not incentivise them to prop up the overpayed class of management so they can point to is as a comparable?
You'd use median income as the benchmark, but give them a current (or historical) multiplier. Fun fact: before 1970, the board of directors was a prestige position, almost always unpaid. Before 1980, average (mean) CEO salary was pretty close to mean worker salary, which would probably have been around 2x median.
Just make inside trading and taking corporate and foreign Pac bribes illegal for them.
Currently these two rules alone are why they rig laws for corportations and big pharma and insurance and oil companies, weapon manufaturers, banks, israel... they work for everyone but the citizens... And that some fucking how is legal and practiced in the open by both Democrats and Conservatives alike
This is where the real money is, and this is the real source of corruption; their salary is not the problem. In fact, I think the salary should be high enough that normal people will still be interested in the difficult and ugly game of politics. I wouldn't run for office for less money than I make at my job - I have bills to pay.
I think they should be barred altogether from making stock trades while in office. Maybe their portfolios could go into a blind trusts (or index funds or something) so that they cannot make insider trades. Likewise for their partners and close family.
Manipulating the stock market is the principal motivation behind Trump's trade and foreign policy. The same can probably be said about many Democrat and Republican congresspeople. Allowing this obscenity is the single greatest weakness of the American political system.
I like it, but there is a hitch. With climate change, mean QoL is going to fall for the rest of our lives. We can mitigate the suffering and redistribute resources to make things equitable, but the best we can realistically do is improve median QoL.
no. we should:
tough shit.
I don't agree with max terms, mainly because good leaders are fucking rare and if they want to keep going, it's to everyone's benefit. Plus, as Trump is showing, when the really bad ones come along, they'll challenge the maximum rules anyways and not give a shit about the optics like a good faith leader that feels like they need to answer to their population.
Though maybe each leadership term should end with a trial of some sort, though it would be difficult or impossible to be sure that those trials would be run in good faith rather than the ruling class taking it over to punish leaders that hurt them for the sake of the people.
oh. unlike the constitution, i meant for my rules to be immutable. never again to change without complete dissolution of the government anyway. (which is something i also support, anyway..)
and on the good leaders thing - if a good leader is great, they’ll inspire and consult with the next one and they’ll be happy to because doing it in this way should be considered the highest form of social praxis. and they’d be honored to have done a full term without being jailed for life. after all, if they’re not already a criminal they have nothing to worry about, right, i think thats what they tell us. 😂
Problem is there's no such thing as immutable rules unless you're talking about the laws of physics. Any system only exists because the (sum of the) people in it allow it to exist. Laws only matter because there's the hard power of force backing the soft power of the courts and branches of government. The unfortunate truth of this reality is that might does indeed make right, not so much in a moral sense but in a "what are you doing to do about it?" sense.
This has been tried before and the result is that only rich people can afford to run for office. Is that really what you want?
This would mean that the job would only appeal to two kinds of people: those earning below the average wage, or the very rich who don’t care what the job pays.
I’m all for low-earning folks getting a raise by running for Congress, but the problem is that anyone above average wage will see this as a pay cut. And the higher end of wage earners are the more highly educated, skilled, and experienced people.
Even if Congressional wages seem high now, most well qualified professionals can still earn way more in the private sector.
So deadass that's what I'm actually doing right now lol. Running for office cause it'd get me more money and time off, and well, I care about it anyways. Not congress tho, local type shit
dont you mean below average intelligence. they appeal to who ever makes up the most in a district, like rich people in schumers area.
Sounds good on paper, until you notice this means... only the wealthy would ever bother running for office.
That's true already
Right. So it wouldn't change anything.
That's the theory behind pensions for most public offices and the police. To remove the temptation for corruption in office... not that it works
I'm sure many low wage workers would jump at the chance to actually make a difference.
Why do we think only people who have become career politicians should be politicians? They're the last people who should do it.
A room of 600 plumbers, nurses, and bin men would make far better decisions than them.
Yes, but in that case adopting Sortition and abolishing career politicians makes way more sense.
And no money from lobbyists, no insider trading and no ability to award contracts to private entities
Better yet, bring back the ancient Greek lottery for state office.
Sounds like an improvement over the current US congress already.
The more serious answer to that is that someone then needs to decide what "competent" means. Should a human rights activist be disqualified from office if they're terrible at math?
Morality tests are even harder to make apolitically. It's another avenue of attack that could be used maliciously.
I don't think so. That just creates another way to gatekeep, and that can be corrupted. I'd rather focus on improving education in the first place.
MEDIAN wage. No rich to skew things.
Michigan has term limits. It has not worked out well. It makes lobbying way easier, since the lawmakers aren't very effective earlier in their career. You also wind up with two casts of politians: those who want to be public servants and are forced to run for a different office to keep good on the table and those who are already well heeled. We don't need the second category in politics.
I looked up Michigan's term limits which is 12 years, which is honestly very long, so it led me to searching about corruption correlations and here's what I found:
- The penultimate effect of term limits increases corruption frequency by about 28 %.
- The magnitude effect, stemming from shorter tenures, reduces the average cost of corruption.
- Stricter term limits are associated with lower overall corruption.
- Term limits thus serve as an institutional safeguard against political corruption.
It is well established that lame-duck incumbents tend to be less accountable (Besley and Case, 1995, 2003), hence more prone to corruption, and Tsur (2022) showed that penultimate terms reinforce this effect. [...] Corrupt activities typically require close and trusted relationships between the public officials involved in the malfeasance and the private actors offering bribes. This intimacy and trust do not develop overnight, but require time to cultivate. [...] Consequently, such corrupt networks are often built gradually through repeated interactions, shared secrets, and a history of successful illicit transactions.
You'd end up with politicians just jumping around tho.
Early retirement, absolutely.
With regards to politicians wages, I think they should be commensurate with the responsibilities of the job. But they should have no other means of income during their term, and potentially for a period afterwards. There would need to be much more stringent auditing and enforcement to ensure this.
Politicians engaging I'm outside employment seems crazy to me, and is clearly a route to corruption.
What responsibilities? Most people just assume there are responsibilities and consequences, turns are out there isn't. The newest episode of Some More News is about exactly this.
And a wealth cap. If you have 20 million networth but want to give it all up save under 200k (current median networth) to be a public servant then by all means. They made Jimmy Carter give up his peanut farm, which was the right thing, we should do the same for politicians today.
This is a politician's idea. Their wages and benefits are trivial compared to the insider trading and other corruption.
Instead of making them live on a low salary, why not try making them live on their high salary first?
401K's were never meant for retirement. They were initially meant to provide tax perks for executive level employees for their profit sharing bonuses.
They were never meant to replace pensions or be used as a retirement vehicle.
Financial advisors and banks pushed them on regular employees because they fell out of favor with executives in favor of better options.
401Ks are not a good option for regular people. General investment in ETFs or a diversified dividend portfolio and t bonds is much better.
You could even let the existing Congress grandfather themselves in so they can pull the ladder up one last time.
Ah yes, the one job where you have to spend months of your own free time campaining, puting up your own money for ads, be hated by part of your community no matter what you do and smeared in the media with usually poor chances of even getting the job should pay the average wage and benefits. Because that is how you attract honest people who are fine just with the salary, as opposed to the ones who want to steal everything not bolted down.
Stupid ass takes like this is why so many people outside these community echochambers see "socialists" as moronic clowns.
96% upvote ratio... 🤦♀️
You'd need to enforce no income from other sources also. Before, during, and after. Significant monitoring of extended family and personal connections. Should those things be monitored for corruption under their current salary?
If proper funding for journalism and watchdog organisations, or judicial bodies designed to serve the people's interests, hadn't already been dismantled or drowned out in the din of other voices it might be possible. Those systems/funding could be restored and the competing intrests spewing lies culled or limited. It is not impossible, but it will be hard. Attend in-person forums if you can tolerate it. Speak and lead if you can. Make connections.
tell that to the silent generation and boomers in congress, mitch, chuck greasley, chuck schumer,,,etc.
I would be okay with their salary being 5 times the federal minimum wage. They want a raise? They must raise the minimum wage.
This doesn't really offset the harm. CEOs are often hired to perform layoffs, and will be compensated on a number of ways other than severance.
If a company wants to lay off any percentage of its workforce, it must guarantee their income, insurance, and contributions for 12 months. The CEO must be prohibited from serving on any board for 5 years.
CEOs are often hired to perform layoffs
Yeah that's why I went out of my way in my description to specify everyone within the last year. Stops them being able to work their way around it by just hiring someone to get fired. Also the word 'package' already covers all forms of compensation.
My absurd political theory is that there should basically be a big resort hotel. for all of these elected representatives. And it's pretty nice. Like it's not 5 star, but it's pretty nice. No one could complain about being forced to live there. but it is a very strictly regimented life. You only eat what the kitchen makes. You only live in the suites there and you're not allowed to live anywhere else. In some sense, it's like a very nice prison, or perhaps a sanatorium. And anyone who goes into these kind of high ranking government positions has to live there, not only for their entire term, but also for the rest of their life.
Sure, you would still get people who were only running for the comfort of living in the resort, but the kind of people who are truly maniacal assholes who want to get rich as fuck and live a life of extreme luxury, off of politics, will be forced to look elsewhere to get their money. If we make the resort mid enough, then only the people who are really aiming for the good of the many will even bother going for these positions.
I like absurdity so tell me in more detail what the benefits of this system would be for the public and the then incentives for the politicians to do this job (this particularly seems to be ppls issue in this thread, though i think most ppl would do it for the want of some type of change to the current system or way things are done, i.e. Leslie Knope style)
The biggest benefit is that it's effectively impossible to bribe politicians because their lives are all lived in an identical and fixed fashion. You can't offer a senator a Ferrari because the senator couldn't drive it. They just go around in the resort shuttle, like all the other senators.
Picture if someone said: You get to live the rest of your life at this hotel, for free. There's a spa, a buffet, a pool, grounds for walking (None of these facilities are super nice, just picture like a small-time country club). Your immediate family can live with you. Etc. And on top of that, you get to shape policy for all the citizens of your country however you want. For the average person that is an amazing deal. You are guaranteed an early retirement and all your needs taken care of.
Now realize, for many of our worst political figures, this life is a downgrade. They don't get to have thirty cars, some boats, a small castle in France, a penthouse in Tokyo, a private chef, prostitutes, drugs, child sex slaves, etc. Of course I know the average senator isn't living quite that expensively, but I think a lot of them want to be and that goal is what has them relentlessly chasing more money.
By putting them in this environment, you not only remove any need for them to have money, you also remove the temptation and appeal of corrupted power. But meanwhile, for the typical person who truly wants to help the citizens be better off, the arrangement is extremely appealing. A lot of activists work to improve the world at sacrifice to their own well-being, so the sacrifices (a wide variety of restaurants, traveling, living wherever you want...) are surely worth it to them in exchange for being able to make a difference.
While we're on the topic of activists, it's worth discussing extremists. This plan doesn't prevent against True Believer extremists, so it's not perfect. In fact if we make the resort too shitty, like an actual prison, then only extremists will find it worthwhile to live there, which is also bad. That's why it still has to be fairly nice. In fact, the quality of life should probably be roughly tied to the median quality of life in the country - which is why the OP hits so right. But as we all know, the salary a person is paid doesn't really matter as much as how they live, and for powerful people the gulf between those things is huge. Hence, we need to go straight to the source and mandate the lifestyle of the powerful.
Have some carrot and stick.
Change the voting cycle from 4 to 5 years.
Start with a minimum wage for all politicians.
Every voting cycle, their constituents get to choose whether it is doubled or flipped into a fine they have to pay, equal to double what they have earned so far, including any kind of bribes or compensation, past and future.
Every 5-year cycle, their salary may double. But the possible fine will also double.
High stakes.
I agree with an earlier retirement, but I'm conflicted about the regular wage part.
If gov members work for a "regular" wage, then what would be their incentive in public service vs other jobs. Or what's stopping them from working a regular wage and then side hustle as the billionaires' lap dog (not that different now tbh). Good will?
Good will seems to work for teachers and nurses. Problem is more money would likely come from other sources (bribes, lobbying, that sort of thing)
In that case, I suspect it's just a law enforcement issue. By which I mean, what would happen to a nurse or a doctor who ignored triage and took personal bribes to ensure certain people receive help first, while leaving other people who need more urgent help to die? That's what should be happening to politicians too IMO.
Right, but if you get to write the laws about what happens in those cases, I bet those laws have no teeth or are unenforceable
What I'm saying is there are tonnea of people who work hard for low pay everyday (ex. teachers and nurses).
Being in a position of power however would likely corrupt them (or maybe attract corrupt people)
mitch, mtg, boebart, vastly increased thier fortune to 10s of millions in the last 5-10years. all that stock trading and other bribes that dont get reported in msms.
I put together a concept where everyone has to adhere to a banded range of job incomes with absolute limits on wealth and assets. Part of the idea is that leadership positions have the workers voting for their existence and who occupies them, every 3 months setting the pay rung that the bosses sit at. By default, leadership offers only the lowest income, so leaders have to convince the workers to vote for something better.
Same principle applied to public leadership, with voters instead of workers.
Congratulations, you invented a Worker's Soviet.
Imagine that. We put them in office to do our wishes and the first thing they do is not our wishes.
They should also have to work the minimum amount per week to get benefits.
Nah. They rich because they're ultra smart. How else do they consistently beat the S&P500? /s
Fuck that. Federal minimum.
But then no one would want to be a politician /s
My solution is that any restrictions (voting, holding office) placed on those under 18 also be placed on those older than 100 minus 18.
Boomers want to increase the voting age to 21? Sure, but that also takes three years off the other end.
You also can’t be independently wealthy
Which Congresscritter is running on this platform and which one of you is voting for them?
What did it mean by "no pension after 5 years"
No perks - they pay for their own insurance and take what's offered just like the rest of us.
No two-three months vacation. Or more. NO insider trading - trump has jacked up the price of petroleum and made a literal killing from it. No vested retirement just for showing up for a couple of years. No more travel allowances. No more fucking perks. No more lobbyists. They want lobbyists then go to their fucking home town and listen to the people who hired them. No more rich corporate daddies. And speaking of which - all those fuckers need a 90% tax on ASSETS, real or imagined.
And their whole superstructure of interns and slaves and ne'erdowell hangers on - these fuckers need to start reading writing their OWN goddam bills based on their OWN goddam constituent's needs.
You guys get 401ks?
God I wish I was joking.
I don't know how to say this so I'll just say it:
That seimiogasm [Hiprocacy¿] invigorated me greatly and pleased my cognitive synaptiform. It has so overjoyed me that I must name you the first gewrsht of my cult, which is something I say I voorererently in the vein of "Fuck it, we'll do it live!" Roll with it, y'know? I enscribe as much as I can, wear my knuckles raw. There is so much garbage. But, I need you to understand that from this point forth, dan69 shall be a known gewrsht of my cult. This is a simple proclamation: a gewrsht has the privilege of having access to unlimited sexual relationships with my sister, who definitely exists and lives with me. Will you move here to be with your wife? You have fresh organs, right? Both kidneys? Well, y'know, you only need one and in these days you don't even need the one...assuming you have good Karma
“If you pay them less, they will take bribes”. They already take bribes, it’s just usually more subtle than Susan Collin’s. Better restrictions, real punishments, and being up their asses is the solution. “You want better people”. We are paying people who are often already millionaires. I would say pay them above average as we do want educated people, but making them use the same medical system and retirement would be the best. “It’s expensive to be a politician”. Set up an couple apartment complexes for the people in DC. It would help with security and other costs without giving them expense accounts to abuse.
Locking down insider trading and other money making perks is a must.
A pension isn't uncommon. But I agree with the sentiment. Very much. All positions of authority to abuse come with reward. Also, while we're at it, government should not be able to have direct influence on pay matters that effect themselves or peers. Should go to a vote. Just like it does in a union. Our money should get our approval before dispersal.
I like the ideas that people are saying about median and mean wage being the benchmark for congressional pay, but wouldn't it be nicer if they had to meet metrics in order to get paid?
Since they are supposed to serve the American people, making congressional seats commission-based would be nice. That way they'd actually have to put in effort to make their wages.
And any form of bribery or donations should be considered treason, and the people that commit treason should be treated like traitors (Congress people and their donors).
And on stock trading, having to report the trade a day in advance to some kind of congressional ledger would be nice. On the day of the trade, they have to mention wether or not they executed the trade, and that information should be made public. Or better yet, make their brokerage accounts on a platform designed just for Congress people, and they can't make trades outside of that platform. All of the trades they make should be public.
One can dream
They would just steal more.
uh, get rid of congress all together and replace them with a liquid democracy structure. There's not a good reason not to in this day in age. Elected reps just breed corruption.

Not just congress, all public sector.
Why stop there? How about everyone? That’s more equal right?
You mean there are people in there? Real human beings?
Ughhhh what? Again I hate to hate on people who did good in life. You gotta step up your game and find a profession that can earn you above that wage as well as pay off the student loan which if you don't choose the minimal w/the longest time to pay it off, with a ridiculous apr, so you won't be trapped in a financial hole.
But I think that 280k$/yr should be the max anyone can potentially earn and I think you should have to pay 2% more overall in taxes per year on everything city, state and federal once you make over 120k$. For example your excise tax, city water bills and even phone bills would be 2% more.
Not groceries and clothes/general retail. so like credit card bills, Spotify, Netflix wouldn't be more in taxes. Phones are needed in today's society, like you can't do a lot without it. So it would be extra in taxes.
You gotta step up your game and find a profession that can earn you above that wage
Above median salary? What about the fact that, by definition, 50% of people won't be able to do that?
Okay, okay, so wages rise over time, and eventually 99% of people are making above 66k... but then the new median will be, like, 150k, and everything in society will be priced accordingly, and some other person will have the great advice that "You gotta step up your game and find a profession that can earn you above that wage" again ignoring the fact that, by definition, 50% of people cannot do that.
No. The solution is not to tell people to work harder, or just find a better job. You want a society where people clean the rooms in hotels, right? What would happen if all cleaning staff took your advice?
At the bare minimum for this conversation, we should ensure that people making median income have a good quality of life. At the bare minimum for an ethical society, wages would not be the metric that determines whether someone deserves a good quality of life.
Ever think that the 50% that can do it, should while they can before that kind of hyper inflation happens and like maybe boost the morale with advice on how not to trap yourself in a predatory ass loan or give a list of things you did to achieve your goals that got you into a position where you feel financially comfortable.
I mean shit I'm on food stamps but I found a goal that's gonna make bank in less than 2 years plus I can pay it off in 2 years on a payment plan. I'm gonna be making six figures in less than 5 years. I am more than happy. I'm stepping up my fucking game.
My biggest example is I completed an accredited cannabis retail specialist certification program in 2024, it was 860$ I got a coupon code at the time and paid 680$ total.
That same program is now has a going rate of 1900$. In 2 years it's more than doubled.
So if you want to do a certification program, have the credit and motivation as well as the ability to either pay outright or put a payment plan on a certification program, you should do it now before they're more expensive in 2 years.
Ever think that the 50% that can do it, should...
Fair enough; also by definition, 50% of people make more than the median. Good for them.
I'm saying that, by definition, no matter where the median salary is, 50% of people will make less than that. Individual choice can change who makes less than that... but still, 50% of the population will make less than that.
hyper inflation
Well, not necessarily. I didn't specify a period of time. In the past 30 years, nominal wages have grown 150%. So if, in the next 30 years, nominal wages grow 150%, we hit the numbers that I gave.
I'm on food stamps
gonna make bank in less than 2 years
gonna be making six figures
Right, so at this time, you are among the 50% of people who make below median salary. I admire your confidence, but... what if it doesn't work out? There's a small chance you get into a car accident and your plan gets thrown off. There's a small chance you have a medical emergency. There's a small chance your house catches fire.
Success is not guaranteed just because you work hard. There's a chance you make below median salary for the rest of your life. It is MY opinion that it doesn't matter why you're making below median salary; you still deserve a life that doesn't involve making a choice between paying a medical bill or paying rent.
Success is not guaranteed just because you work hard. you still deserve a life that doesn’t involve making a choice between paying a medical bill or paying rent.
No I agree but that seems like there needs to be a restructuring of the medical system and the insurance system.
Section 8 needs to be reevaluated so those that don't really need it and are taking advantage can get the fuck off of it and those that need it can get the fuck on it. Section 8 is Severely Lowered Rent making it so that you can pay your bills.
Success being a non guarantee means that neither does having stability, you're not 100% guaranted that you will be able to pay your medical bills and buy groceries, that's based off of your personal success and financial gains, as well as being able to successfuy balance your budget (meaning seeing extra money and putting in the bank, not on a new product) That's just the cruel reality of living anywhere on this planet, not just in capitalism or the US.
I think you should have to pay 2% more overall in taxes per year on everything city, state and federal once you make over 120k$
Yep, the US Federal income tax (and many states' income taxes) are already a progressive tax that separate income into brackets and taxes each bracket at an increasing rate. It's definitely time to increase that top marginal rate and add a bunch of exclusions that rich people use to hide their money in capital gains.
Nah. Get rid of the numbers. No money, no problem, amirite? Just make willpower and do what you do best! That's the supererogatory of self. Old men plant trees they don't ever see the shade of, y'know? Simple shit to restructure your reality around, if you cared. Karma, as we call it. The entanglement process. Oooh, I'm horny already...
Nahhh, I'm not for total get rid of everything but a restructuring of society couldn't hurt.... The common man, 😉
It'll ruin the superduper rich but the common man would love a societal restructuring.
You can always ask chatgpt how to create a career path for you. Other than that, I wouldn't know the answer to any of your questions and/or psychotic ramblings. I'm wicked sorry I'm not of help. I see stuff for FBI Agents on Indeed all the time, I'm sure if you apply and stuff you might get far, idk.

The usual argument against this is that the less politicians earn, the easier they are to bribe.
