Either that or back deals with the cartels to ensure the same happened to the opposition, or not to the official candidate
Either that or back deals with the cartels to ensure the same happened to the opposition, or not to the official candidate
Legitimate question: Who exactly is it that won't attend her inauguration? Were they invited, but refused to attend? Who else from the US is going?
Also, congrats to Mexico! sounds like a great choice for a president!
Yeah, I'd be interested in how many people go to the inauguration of other countries heads of state.
Like, my best guess is that it's a dig at, like, Gov Abbott, but I agree that I don't think I'd expect him to, even if he was a Democrat.
Spiderman pointing at Spiderman
Guessing it is common for the state department to send a representative. Perhaps the Secretary of State since it’s an important neighbour. Since it’s campaign time, you could see others going if they believe it helps their reelection bid somehow ( though I don’t know how), but it would not be unusual if only the US ambassador to Mexico is present. I don’t know of any foreign politician that attend the US presidential inauguration.
Meanwhile Lê Đức Thọ refused the prize as it was shared with FUCKING KISSINGER.
He got that prize mainly for not being George W. Bush if I remember 2009 correctly.
Best thing Obama did was pulling out of Iraq, finally leaving an illegal war, so hats off for that. But all his talk about envisioning a world free of nuclear weapons and then not even attempting disarmament of the US ones kinda seems weak.
Kudos to Obama for actually following through, but the withdrawal from Iraq had a deadline set by the U.S. Status of Forces Agreement signed by Bush, per the request of the Iraqi government.
I think his attempts to reestablish new diplomacy with Cuba and Iran were good.
Then Trump fucked it all up and Biden doesn't seem to give a shit about going back.
Wasn't Carter a Nobel recipient too?
We actually bombed the moon on the day of the Nobel Prize announcement!
Seriously though, it was a middle finger to Bush more than anything.
Lots of Peace winners, but Winston Churchill had one in literature:
Churchill was a master of historical non-fiction. Not "history books," per se, but basically books about historical topics pertaining to England that interested him: https://en.wikipedia.org/.... They were very popular during his day.
Nobel Laureate is a bit of an overstatement but she was part of an organization that won the Nobel Prize, similar to how Amnesty International has won it a few times:
She was a contributing author to the 2007 IPCC report, maybe not a huge deal (there were 100+ authors) but it is reasonably relevant. Here is a chapter that she contributed to (I don't know if there is more than one) and her earlier work is cited.
My first thoughts,
U.S.A.: Can we have that president?
U.S. Govt.: No, you have president at home
Biden
But seriously this is awesome to see, It's nice to see some uplifting news.
And by shafted, they mean the opposite cartel got armed by the "Fast and Furious" operation
Wasn't that mostly for local offices likes amyors and such?
edit ok I was wrong here, I understand what people disagreeing with me are saying
The top comment on this thread should be an unqualified “Hell yeah!” not speculation over whether she is going to be murdered.
I am not attacking you, I understand the knee jerk reaction, I am just pointing this out because I think it is true. I also don’t question that you are genuine in your concern, that isn’t what I mean.
To everyone else on this thread, especially if you are white/European or from the US and are white please don’t joke about the President of Mexico getting assassinated given the history with Mexico and the US (and by extension Europe). It isn’t funny, even when you are being sarcastic.
Just be happy for Mexico.
I might be wrong but I don't think the commenter was joking. It's not a joke to say a lot of politicians have been assassinated and to question how someone in such a situation managed to get safely elected. I wonder the same thing.
The top comment on this thread should be an unqualified “Hell yeah!” not speculation over whether she is going to be murdered.
What should be and what are, are frequently two different things. In this case, political candidates shouldn't be commonly murdered, but that's a reality for them and one they should be planning for.
And it's not a knee jerk reaction, it's just a legitimate worry posted by someone who pays attention to the news. I'm sad to say that I both had the 'hell yeah' reaction right before thinking 'I hope her security can keep her safe' thoughts back to back.
I understand but I literally just left Nogales to visit my stepfather and during my week there there were so many campaign ads. The only thing he told me about them is that candidates from all positions from Mayor to Governor and up wind up dead all the time.
Apparently it's really common and my father had a similar reaction to the top comment. Yes it's scary but it's something that the government needs to take precautions for
How the hell did Mexico get a Jewish president before the USA? We need to step up our game.
But also good on her and on Mexico. She sounds exactly like the sort of person I’d want running my country.
they also had gay marriage … before we did
The US legalized gay marriage nationwide in 2015; Mexico didn’t achieve the same until 2022.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage (Timeline section)
It's interesting how ahead their government is with some things and behind it is with others (generally speaking they have a lot of crime in their larger cities).
It’s harder to take out crime when the organized crime is outfitted with similar gear to the army and the army is highly corrupt due to the cartel paying better.
America was fortunate that we were able to snuff out our organized crime before they had access to modern technology that made it near impossible to snuff out their movement.
It’s hard to arrest a group of cartel all at once if they never leave their heavily guarded fortresses for Sunday brunch like the mafia did
Don't disagree, it's just fascinating to see it all play out.
Another issue is that they're civilians. You could bomb their facilities but bombing civilians, especially when they're your own citizens, is a pretty bad look.
This is not true.
More misinformation, eh? Really going all in with it, huh?
Marriage for same-sex couples nationwide was legalized by the Supreme Court of both countries: Mexico in August 2010, and the United States in June 2015.
As for socialized medicine, Mexico clearly has it, and the United States clearly does not.
A person with good ideas that leaves their religion at the door would be swell right now. Religion only divides us into smaller, scarier groups. (See: Christian nationalism, women's rights, the middle east, etc.)
That said, it is a damn shame Bernie didn't have a fair chance.
How the hell did Mexico get a Jewish president before the USA?
there just aren't that many places as racist as the good ol USA man.
Mexico City had the world's largest population of Jewish folks before Israel was created, iirc.
Huh, I definitely would’ve guessed it was New York City. I suppose I was mistaken about the ethnoreligious diversity of my neighboring country
We got close once. Unless you want to count Netanyahu
Hell, how did Mexico get a female president before the USA wtf? Even South Korea did (okay that one sucked but it's still baffling regarding the US)
In October 1991, Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari went to Stanford University to give a talk on the benefits of Latin American neoliberalism, but was met with a demonstration against it. The angry college girl holding the sign with the inscription "Fair Trade and Democracy Now" in English is the current president-elect of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum

They still had newspapers in the 90s. And some pictures you can only find on old newspaper micro film. So they're in black and white. Even color printed newspapers would catalog their back issues in black and white.
color printed newspapers would catalog their back issues in black and white
Why? It's not expensive to set one copy aside and keep 365 of them a year into some cold dry storage, right?
Not everyone bought their first 5MP digital camera on the same day.
Almost everyone was shooting on film in 1991, as digital cameras were usualy NTSC resolution or 1024p and very expensive. And B/W film was always cheaper than color but both were quite affordable by the 1990s.
Why the hell can't we have candidates this awesome on the ballot here in the US?! 😿
Sheinbaum is better than those two, but not as much as you think. Her mayorship and her party have good relations with Israel, cooperated with the US in violence against migrants, and silenced protestors.
Yes, and I voted for Bernie when he ran and I would absolutely vote for AOC if/when she does run. Just… the choices in this election cycle are wanna-be, half-demented dictator-for-life vs a "moderate" Democrat who, while he's gotten a surprising amount done, isn't exactly renowned for pushing the corporations hard on climate change.
Honestly, the stuff he's gotten done over his career has been life changing for me. I hate that I have to give him credit for legalizing cannabis, but here we are.
Yeah, it's a pretty frustrating time to be leaning left. And given the chaos Trump would unleash, it's not like there is any choice at all about whether or not to vote for Biden… 😿
bc mexico is actually democratic with significant proportional representation and not the weird arse shit merica calls "democracy"?
Yeah 37 assassinated candidate runner ups being murdered speaks volumes about that
They were not all runner-ups, you're falling for misinformation bullshit (and stop upvoting misinformation, people!). The assassinations were not presidential candidates. They were local politicians, running for mayoral or council seats.
Which is absolutely fucking horrifying in and of itself, don't get me wrong, but what you're saying is just not true.
Yeah, kinda wondering why the cartels want her in office. Maybe she's less good than she appears.
Also wondering why anyone would want to lead Mexico given that angering the cartels will get you cartel'd...
I'll tell you what I told the previous commenter: They were not all runner-ups, that's misinformation. The assassinations were not presidential candidates. They were local politicians, running for mayoral or council seats.
Which is also disgusting, of course, but no, the cartels did not kill off all her competition to get her into office.
Maybe they don't want her in the office, maybe they didn't want the other guys they offed
And now I’m jealous of Mexico.
President Sheinbaum.
Not "President Claudia".
Now the GOP is really hating Mexico.
And below retirement age, too! Finally someone who won't just want to secure a cozy last few few years for their elderly rich friends.
Her republikkklown neighbors are petty, petulant children. I hope she does well.
Which US politicians typically attend the inauguration of the Mexican President? I'm genuinely curious, it's not something I've ever paid attention to and which US politicians attend it isn't usually something that gets news coverage here.
Mike Pence was at the one in 2018.
republikkklown
Grow up, please, lol.
More leaders like her please, looking at you US
Edit but yeah being technically capable aside, many eugenists were PhDs and philosophers. Sam Harris comes to mind as he is a racist and a sophist with lots of academic qualifications. So yeah, ethics and morals also matter greatly. Mexico seems to have lucked out, good for them!
Morena is a staunchly anti-liberal party, they'd never have a chance in the US.
I'm going to move to Mexico I guess. Here in The Netherlands, as well as most of the European countries, right wing extremism is on the rise. Who would have thought it would be Mexico to show we don't have to live in a dystopian shit show.
If you do or know someone that will do, please take into consideration that the housing market in México, right now, has been favoring foreigners and that in some areas, they've displaced the locals and raised prices so much that they can't afford to be there anymore (be for shopping, working, etc.). Please don't contribute to this and research before, do not try to pay in euros/dollars, come legally and work legally.
That's seriously fucked up. I wouldn't want to contribute to that. Sadly, I've seen this shit way to often and I strongly oppose to it.
Also, depending on what you move, make sure to take into account areas with drought, and future rain and heat patterns. Climate change is only going to get worse. Make sure you have a secure water supply to work with.
Ok so I'm not moving for the coming 10 years for sure, and if I'm moving it probably won't be Mexico. But the climate change thing is something I worry about. I live in the Netherlands, most parts are below sea level. The dykes are being reinforced, but the plans for now are finished in about 10 years and won't be high and strong enough in about 5 years, so we need to start to reinforce it even more 5 years before the current plans are being completed. At the same time ground water levels are getting lower, so trees are unable to get water from the ground and die, so the roots will die too and won't be able to hold the ground together. It's getting harder and harder pumping drinking water from the ground. Next to that, salt seawater is normally held back in the ground by the ground water, but because it's level is getting lower while the sea level is rising, salt seawater is making it's way into the ground, killing more greenery because it's polluting the groundwater and making it undrinkable. So I may be forced to move, as well as most inhabitants here if this shit continues. 10 to 12 million people forced to relocate due to lack of water AND too much water at the same time. Weird AF.
Please do so, there is nothing more we love here in LATAM as clueless gringos arriving to be easily robbed
Ha! Jokes on you! I'm poor because I have to spend 1900 euros per month on rent alone so there's nothing to rob me of. You can't even rob me of my dignity anymore.
Jokes aside, I'm aware of the major issues Mexico has. I've never been there but I would love to visit as it's a beautiful country. But I'm too chicken to go due to the high crime rate etc. And tickets are too expensive, I wasn't joking about having no money because my decent salary is being sucked up completely by rent, taxes, bills, insurances and food.
But I'm glad Mexico has elected a leader I could only dream of. I hope she can make a change towards better. Or at least, I hope she is what she looks like. I mean, is she really good or only looks like that (like the president of India). At least she looks like Merkel + + +
Bro spends in a month more than a local spends in a year and then says he is poor, thinking he has nothing to lose because he lost his "dignity" lmao
Here getting robbed is getting murdered. I suppose you may be entitled to say you have nothing to lose after that
I need to spend that much for basics, like food and a roof over my head. I'm basically a slave, I need to work most of my life without being able to build up anything. No saving, buying a house, etc.
But I'm aware I live in one of the wealthiest countries, where I do not have to fear anything no matter where I go. I'm aware I'm extremely lucky to have been born here. I've seen how life can be different, when I went on deployment to the Middle East and Africa. I've been to horrible places and have seen horrible things.
But life here is extremely expensive. We make more money, but in the end we have nothing left after we payed all the bills to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table. I don't have much to lose, as I'm depressed AF, alone as my wife left me, stuck with PTSD from when I was in the military, unable to enjoy life anymore somehow. So a holiday in Mexico where I snort loads of cocain with a bunch of hookers before I get robbed and killed doesn't sound so bad really.
I think everywhere you've posted this has been relevant to those particular threads. I appreciate you carrying that torch.
Actually, you're not being clear, at all. The article you linked, yourself, notes that the 37 murdered political candidates were local government candidates murdered between September and May, not national candidates. Far cry from your insinuation that 37 of Claudia Sheinbaum's political opponents were murdered so she could win by the hands of the cartels.
She's the same party as the incumbent and the results were a blow out. She got a plurality in a three man race, those guys didn't stand a chance.
It was bouncy
Morena is a pretty solid party overall, and we should treat socdems in the global south differently from their counterparts in the imperial core.
AMLO for example is pushing hard against the US extradition of Julian Assange, even playing the the collateral murder video when some New York Times journalists started throwing shade. Morena also recognizes Palestine and is closing doors to Israel, against the wishes of the US.
Great to see the people of Mexico continuing to support Morena and reject liberalism, this is a great day.
Indeed, I don't mean to downplay this day! Just to point out that I am hopeful that she can do some great work unhindered by US hostilities. Social Democracy in the Global South is fundamentally not based on Imperialism like in the Global North, I absolutely agree.
Ya for sure! Its exciting times, her election is not something that could've happened even in the 1990s.
Mexico recently applied to join the Genocide case against israel.
Lets hope she can keep it going. It's difficult to do deals withh America without being forced into supporting a few coups every so often.
Social democracy is a subsection inside the umbrella of Socialism. So she's both.
Try again.
Her being a woman is probably the least significant thing about this.
lol @ the downvotes for mentioning the Cartel who is known for assassinating, at the very least threatening government employees and politicians, including actual presidents.
The important thing is she didn't die from the Cartels. Do you know how many politicians have been taken out by cartels in the last year. Just recently in April down in Chipas a cartel got 538 politicians to resign all on the same day and murdered 38.
To be a politician in Mexico from any party you need blessings from the right people.
perhaps spoken too early, nevertheless just as those candidates being killed does not automatically make them anti cartel (it could very well be a power grab attempt by fractions and candidates supporting certain fractions), it also does not make her automatically pro cartel.
Imagine having 37 candidates murdered in the USA for an election and calling for it to be standard behavior lolz
Does Mexico want to get freedomed? Because this is precisely how you get freedomed.
Probably the same reason the whole party is still around. It would be awesome to get a real input from someone who lives in Mexico (preferably a normal person and not a summer beach home/mansion owner who pretends to live like normal people do), but honestly don't know how likely they are to lurk here on Lemmy....surely there is at least one among us?
My skepticism stems mostly from the "popularity" of former president, supposedly reaching some 80%? Sounds pretty good if it's genuinely true, but it's eerily approaching fabled 90-100% authoritarian levels.
Mexican here.
As you say, Mexico is a bit divisive about her, many calling her just a mere puppet of current president López Obrador and worrying about her not doing that much when she was state governor.
And many of her claims about feminism, ecologism, pro-Palestina positioning, are a bit weird, in respect of her former position and the little things she did in regard those.
What worries me personally rn is that legislative power will also be at her mercy. If she wants to do any change to Constitution (as Lopez Obrador already had tried many times), little to nothing will be able to stop her. For better or for worse.
What's that last part about she changing the constitution? How could no one be able to stop her?
Mexico, just as USA, has three branches in government. Two of them are elected by popular vote (President and Congress) and the other one by internal vote (Supreme Court).
In the past, Lopez Obrador tried to change Constitution via reforms on various subjects. A couple of them were so controversial that divided the Congress in two: those of his party vs. those of other parties. The latter won just for a bit for the super-majority requirement for that type of reform.
Aside from that, the Supreme Court also didn't support some of those reforms. So, just as any authoritarian figure would do against their opposition, Lopez Obrador intended to change how the Supreme Court elects its magisters and judges, turning it into another popular vote branch (which he could control just as with Congress).
Back to the present, Sheinbaum will have that super-majority in Congress that Lopez Obrador didn't. That could allow her even reforms to the Supreme Court, effectively disappearing any opposition to whatever reform they wanted to pass.
So... let's just hope she has good intentions.
She is a puppet of the current president, she was apponted by himself
That said, the opposition was also a woman but she was an unknown and 3 parties with different views allied to launch her as candidate
The party is projected to have qualified majority of the Congress and maybe senate so they'll be able to do a bunch of stuff so that may be worrying
They have done a lot of good stuff but also they are full of corruption like cancelling a great airport that still needs to be paid and building a shitty one very far away that no one wants to use and that interferes with the operation of the other airport so it doesn't really help with congestion
Sheinbaum is a climate scientist so I'm curious about who she'll appoint to the energy commission because the current government is all-in on carbon
First question how is she a puppet. Second question, and the Congress, what might be worrying about it?
The president was thoroughly involved in the process of selecting the party's candidate. Claudia's campaign was that she'll continue with AMLO's plan
With super majority they can make changes to the Constitution
She was selected and placed there as a mere puppet of current president amlo. México is indeed a narco governement but people who don't actuallly experience it first hand living it every day think that this facade is true. She was married to a guy who was investigated for embezzlent but got off the hook because of political contacts. Her father was a chemist who owned a solvent factory (he has passed away and she inherited the business) with very sketchy practices regarding toxic waste management. Factory is still hers and it still operating under the same principles.
Can you explain more of the background? Ignore the downvotes
Can we also elect a smartypants nonretiree ? Is that even an option ?
Oh is this why Biden is suddenly cracking down on immigration and wanting to build the wall too? I had assumed it was just blatant appeals to the right.
I mean, you couldn't source a link to a tweet yourself and had to share a reddit post on reddit's competing platform?
Those are pretty good points. Still, you had to participate in Reddit in order to find that story.
The point is that news organizations, reporters, etc. need to start using fediverse platforms so we're not stuck still using Xitter and Reddit. Moreover, a source from a reputable news outlet would be preferred over social media.
She sounds like a badass. Go Claudia Go! 🎉
i tought i heard somewhere about her being a fascist?
Without any background or context or evidence on that accusation, I am hesitant to accept "I thought I heard somewhere" .
Actual fascists and nazis have been projecting that accusation onto their opponents for a while now.
Well fuckin' teach me then!!
Lol. Seriously though, why do you feel so aggressively entitled to have others educate you? You're clearly ignorant of the answers you're looking for but you're disrespecting others for your lack of knowledge. Idk, just something I noticed - your cross and whatnot
If she made deals with the cartels to be alive this long I doubt it
You. You are the reason they need to point it out.
Just move on. You think no one cares, but I care infinitely less about your comment on it than I do learning the background of an elected official, especially given the situation in Gaza.
*sigh* No, 37 other presidential candidates were not murdered, which is what you are implying by saying:
Leaving this final one the pick of the cartels as the survivor
So stop spreading misinformation ffs.
Not a single one of the assassinated was running for president, that poster was only right in that the cartels were targeting people for political reasons on the local/mayoral level.
This is admittedly horrific to hear about
Their purpose was to push their anti-leftist agenda by repeating the false narrative that Mexican drug cartels murdered every other presidential candidate save one...their favored candidate...this Jewish leftist scientist woman. SeveralAnts wasn't stating anything in good faith.
Generalizations, ableism, sexism all in one comment. Well done 👍
It doesn't have to mean anything! It gets the people going
No. I’m ignorant. I thought body-shaming (fat-shaming) was ableist. I researched it and found I was wrong. You are correct.
But que es ableismo? Sorry but Mexican Wikipedia requires payment.
Gracias 🙏😁. The juro que me Dio trabajo. Pero me salio! Osea, suena chingon.
thanks for using Leebra!
go to feed...
Wait, after all those murders and sabotaging during the elections the people still managed to elect a really worthy president (seems like the best president I've seen in all the countries the last years)??
Wow, maybe I should move to Mexico
Congratulations Mexico!
Edit: Well, hmm:
