Def joining that, nice.

I can feel myself getting happier in real time (hit 7'C last night and already my mood is improving) as the pitch dark silence of winter sets in. All the annoying birds migrate away, insects are all dead or hibernating, no rustling leaves, and most humans stop making sounds or going outside as much especially at night when I'm personally most active as a night owl. When my nostril hairs freeze together for the first time that year I'm positively ecstatic. I live further north than 95% of Canadians so even less daylight in the winter which is fucking great. The Sun < Vitamin D liquid drops. Go away, shitty fusion ball.

What the fuck are you talking about? People at high latitudes have the hottest summers. Ever hear of Darwin? Cairns? Broome? It's the people from the south that don't know what heat is. Adelaidians will complain about the heat and it's only 30 degrees.

I've never seen an Australian do the American thing of assuming the person they're responding to is from their country before. For most of the English speaking world, higher latitudes = further from the equator.

Fuck yes. "Winter depression" beats the shit out of summer exhaustion. Especially up here where the sun won't stay down long for most of summer.

azertyfun 5 points 10 months ago

You mustn't get "winter depression" particularly bad then. I can't get anything done when DST does away. Extreme cold or extreme heat I can easily find physical solutions to (my house is well-insulated), but spending all daylight hours in front of a screen then having zero sunlight for after-work activities is just a burden I have to bear 5 months out of the year and it makes me want to kill myself or become a bricklayer or sth.

Find the time to go outside during work hours. Take a little walk or something. It's easy for me since I used to be a smoker but I get how it would make other people uncomfortable. If you live in a northern country it's very likely you have the right to these kinds of breaks.

azertyfun 3 points 10 months ago

It has certainly helped to be able to work from home in the last couple years so I do take a walk during lunchtime. Working in an office you're expected to socialize during lunch breaks, which happen indoors...

Even then, 30 minutes of daylight every day five days a week in the best case scenario is NOT a lot, especially when it's cloudy for weeks on end so saying "daylight" is already kind of stretching it.

I also used to be an office worker and lunchtime is for you and you only. If what you need is to sit alone with a podcast and decompress, people need to be respectful of that. People are usually more understanding than they're given credit for.

Are you a night owl who stays up long after the sun sets, or an early bird who gets up long before the sun rises? That's one way to get a lot more Dark Mode time.

I knew a guy who worked for a company in Boston, but he'd always dreamed of living in Hawaii. He managed to get them to agree to his moving to Hawaii, but said that he still needed to keep East Coast hours. That meant he was getting up about 6 hours earlier than normal, and was joining meetings when it was pitch black there. But, for him it was worth it, not because he was a fan of Dark Mode, but because he was really into SCUBA and this schedule meant that he was off work by noon and could spend his afternoons SCUBA diving.

It was probably hell on his social life to be in bed by 6pm. But, the schedule was perfect for diving. He was off work when the light was at its best and could dive 7 days a week not just on weekends.

I kinda fluctuate between both, but indeed; you've called out my secret coping strategy. The other trick is just sunglasses though, still that one's not as effective to dim the artificial lights most of the time, and it's generally frowned upon to drive with them at night despite the LED headlights, ha.

Corn 1 point 10 months ago

Technically we are in a rainy season, but its not a real rainy season, just a few months of showers for like 15-30 minutes, then sunny again, every 2-3 days. Similar to Florida weather.

Those downpours can be pretty severe though, when it starts bad, you pull over and put on rain gear immediately because its about to get much worse. Sometimes it feels like you're riding through soda, water hitting every inch of your body at all times, plus an inch of runoff on the road.

I've mostly lived in temperate climates, but I've visited places with rainy seasons like that.

I always thought it was a season where it rained a lot with constantly overcast skies and a lot of drizzle, like Portland / Seattle / Vancouver in the winter. But, sometimes it's the season where you know it's probably not going to rain at all during the day except at 5pm you can expect a huge downpour, then it goes back to normal.

I’ll take that for sure. Absolutely loooove winter. I downright detest summer. It’s too bright, too warm, sweaty, makes me irritable and I’m less productive in general.

To quote The Weeknd: I come alive in the fall time. My mood improves, everything gets cosy and comfortable. Fall and winter bring nice things like christmas, hot chocolate, gorgeous colors in nature, nice sweaters, warm jackets. Absolutely love it.

Same. I love the PNW, but damn winter is brutal, despite the weather not being too bad.

All the drawbacks of winter with few of the benefits. PNW has a million other reasons why it's rad tho.

Since I've moved farther north I cant imagine being wet and 3°C/37F all winter. -6°C/19F feels much warmer. Doesn't exactly suck the heat from your bones. Still, PNW in winter is a mood and I kind of miss it even if it is shit sometimes.

Winter fans are gamers and vampires. Or gamer vampires. But Summer fans want skin cancer. They crave it you see. They want their skinflesh to rebel against the tyranny of their biological code, awoken by the sun's burning light.

But seriously, winter sucks for me right now because I have to go to work and driving in snowy conditions is miserable. And Summer sucks because the AC in my room is terrible and the sun burns me pretty bad if I'm not careful. I'm glad its only fall ATM but of course almost everyone loves fall. And most people at least like spring.

Hate the early darkness because it marks the end of my garden and the beginning of muddy paws and shoes needing to be cleaned before entering the house, but otherwise winter is beautiful.

Yes, I like the dark of nighttime more than the bright heat of daytime. Sue me, right?! Cool shit happens at night. Work happens during the day. And it's hot and yech out. Sure you can show/see more flesh in the summer. Still can't touch it, plus the surprise once you open the wrappings and see what's underneath! Divine.

The vibes are pretty comfy until you get past -15°C and/or mid-to-late January. After that, it's either too cold, too slushy, or too grey and gross for me to enjoy.

Give me a summer evening/late night over that any day. Do love me a good snowstorm, though (from inside, with a hot spiked coffee and simulated fireplace).

-15°C

Sitting beside a wood stove with a hot drink and book, good food, and sauna.

Especially the later: 85+°C sauna in sub-zero weather is amazing.
