YSK : If you feel sad, eat an Orange

a month ago by Wudi to c/youshouldknow

Physician-researcher outlines gut-brain clues behind “orange a day” finding.

According to Harvard research, eating oranges stimulates growth of Faecalibacterium prausnitzia.

This bacteria lives inside the human gut and generates serotonin and dopamine — 2 powerful molecules that elevate your mood.

Harvard is one of the top 5 research universities in the world. Gary Ruvkun won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Where does he work ? Harvard.

Oranges and other citrus fruit are also significantly acidic, which is hard on teef. So try not to go overboard, or at least rinse your mouth with water afterwards if you eat citrus regularly.

By the same token, do not rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth. This gives more of the toothpaste's fluoride a chance to adhere, from my understanding.

Have a shower orange.

Put orange in fridge to make it cool. Take orange to shower. Observe orange and realize you can eat it as messy and feral as you want. Go full lycanthrope on the orange. Shower off the juice. Go back to being an animal pretending to blend into a society, but now, you know better.

Aren't they the same substance used in the white part of the peel below the delicious zest? Though I might be thinking about clementines and the white stringy bits that run from top to bottom along the centre. Been a while since I had a proper orange but don't they have even more of that white stuff?

I think the membrane that surrounds the little juice packets is also bitter, if you separate it from the good parts.

True, but here (Denmark) it is literally illegal to sell anything but pure fruit juice as juice, if it is made from concentrate it has to be labelled clearly, and it is only allowed to ad the amount of water that was removed.

If it has added sugar it is called Nektar.

If it has artificial flavors it is called Saft. Saft can also have added sugar. Saft also means Juice, English does not AFAIK have the words to distinguish between pure juice and flavored and sweetened juice.

IDK the rules in other EU countries, but my guess is that they are similar, but localized depending on language.

I drink a tea that has orange in it so it would be awesome if it applies

path: 0 23800667, hotness: undefined, score: 7, children: 1
Ephera 4 points a month ago

I mean, this research wouldn't be able to tell what about oranges makes these bacteria thrive, so would need a separate study for dried oranges or similar variations.

Having said that, your tea likely has so little actual orange in it, that it's very likely negligible either way.
There's probably just a tiny bit of orange in each tea bag to begin with, and it might even just be orange peel. And then it's just traces of that which go into your tea water, too.

Of course, drinking tea in general can probably also help with depression in some way. At the very least, it hydrates you and presumably improves blood circulation, which can help get you out of a rut.

The study is more correlation than causality. Even though they tried to be careful they did not (and can't) account for a plethora of confounding factors, which – especially with depression – is particularly problematic.

They provide a plausible explanation for a causal pathway, but did not prove it. This provides a testable hypothesis, which is why I would read this more like "more research needed", rather than definitive proof. I wouldn't go as far as to say "eat an orange a day, to keep depression away". Although it probably wouldn't hurt to eat some more fruit, given how bad the fruit content in most people's diet is anyway.

So this is, unfortunately, a rather sensationalist takeaway you've provided here, OP. But that's the curse of how we're doing capitalism. Even 'top research universities' like Harvard need to be sensationalist to attract some publicity and get their research funded.

I eat at least 2 blood oranges a day, sometimes 5 or even 6. They taste so damn good, and they're relatively cheap ($1.49/lb). I literally always have at least 4 pounds on hand, but I just restocked, so I've got 12 pounds at the moment. Sometimes, in the summer, I buy extra so I can juice them. Then I mix the juice with pomegranate juice, and pour the mix over ice in a kala namak rimmed glass. Vodka optional.

We are but that’s besides the point, we actually meant it in a literal way lmao

Lemons are manufactured by mixing a Citron and a Bitter Orange. They’re are not naturally occurring in any way, while the orange is a fully natural occurring fruit. Other than that, lemons are metaphorically seen as struggles or suffering while oranges are shown to be liquid sunshine or joy.

That’s all we meant by lemons being manufactured suffering and oranges being joyous wonders. Was just play on words on our part
