"What happened?" are you for real?

Did you not read any newspaper, watch any news, or generally exist in society since 2016?

First you decided to bazooka yourselves in the foot with the Brexit vote, then went through a revolving clown show of increasingly bizarre political sideshow pieces that pretended to be PM, before finally opting to negotiate an EU exist that was about as disastrous as it could've been for your economy.

Add in the fact that the entire world has been turning to shit around you due to despotic leaders trying to rape their neighbours/the climate/populace/actual kids/everything joined by a cabal of evil billionaires who are gleefully destroying democracy and the world economy so they can go out in one final last hurrah of capitalism, and you have the audacity to ask "What happened?"?.

I seriously can't with these "I don't do politics" idiots anymore.

I'd say a good 50% of people are not paying attention to current events/politics, then 40% who follow somewhat but don't really understand as they lack the critical thinking skills necessary to actually process the information and end up parroting the talking points of their preferred media, and then finally 10% who realize just how fucked everything is.

It's less than 10% because some of those that are able to comprehend what's happening are the ones who made it happen and/or are rooting for it like nothing else they've ever done. This is exactly what many want, them being on a high horse as many as possible never even getting the chance of dreaming of that position.

Eh at first glance I'd almost lump most of them in with that 40%, but I also have a hard time comprehending anyone of proper intelligence being that maniacal, so yeah I suppose you've got an excellent point. That said, most MAGAts I see in the real world are just on the bandwagon, heck most of the ones I meet can barely rub two brain cells together regarding politics to the point I have a small level of sympathy for just how stupid they are.

i don't, stupid people are an anchor, frankly the bottom 20% should loss the ability to vote. BUUUUT!!

They get UBI. (and nothing small, like 20-30K pegged to inflation or something, something BIG like that.)

since they wont be represented in the voting spectrum any more, but they still are important for operation of the country and labor and frankly, we all know some dumb ass that we like or love. we wouldn't abandon them. but they don't posses critical thinking skill so they should get a dif societal task, acting as our strongest consumers or creatives, they could even save and start a business, remember a lot of business people aren't geniuses like engineers or scientists. we would totally be fine it we locked it to the bottom 20% (or whatever ratio would actually work, this is more of a generalization.) and i don't think we would get into any situation where that 20% lost voting rights would creep up, thanks to the new UBI anchor keeping the gov from having to pay more people, and the remaining 80% of people would be more likely to see though bullshit, especially now that the bottom 20% are disenfranchised from it. they won't peddle nonsense for these bad actors.

Now imagine every tenth customer starts stealing.

Now the company has to increase prices to compensate for the loss of profits. We all start paying for the shoplifters, ridiculous, right?

But who are we really protecting by paying more, though? The shoplifters or the company? Who's REALLY the parasite here? The rich company or the person forced to steal?

EDIT because I might've not made my point clear - if we eliminate the company and replace it with public services, there would be noone to take profit and thus no need to hike the prices.

Privatization is evil. The idea of profit is parasitic.

This statement is something that I dont understand. While yeah, if that would happen to a big store, it might be alright but if I ran a corner store, I wouldnt be okay with this.

Also people who steal food here are gypsies and narcs. Normal people with financial difficulties get their goods from government, food shelters, churches and other help associations.

Now, I've been fucking dirt poor, I've gone sleep hungry, I've had to walk to every place instead of taking public transit. Still I've never thought about stealing food.

This right here. This right here is why I fucking hate when ppl dismiss surveillance and data collection, eg. "idc if they want to know i went to work and then Starbucks" etc..

They absolutely make assumptions about us based on statistical analysis of the data they have and then the systems they control treat us based on those assumptions, however wrong. Dynamic pricing is now a thing because they know enough to target subgroups of their customer base to price gauge more efficiently.

Information is power and people are extremely fucking cavalier about empowering the most exploitative and cruel ppl in society, business leaders.

But also the beef and cattle industry has been quietly and carefully raising the price of beef, and especially steak, ever since the pandemic and hoping no one would call them out for their blatant price gouging.

Part of this has been framed as "steak is a luxury item and so we can price it out of the reach of the poor". Pair that with government programs silently removing steak as a buyable item on food stamp and public food programs.

Meanwhile the cattle industry has been posting all time record high profits for the last 5 years.

Food should absolutely be a human right, but what you receive should be based on survival needs and sustainability. I don't mean bread an water but rather a broad selection of staple goods that results in a varied diet with the ability to choose for yourself what you eat. Steak, and most other meat products, shouldn't be part of the basic selection, they are luxury products without a sustainable way to produce in large enough quantities. The equivalent is that free public transport wouldn't include flights since that simply isn't viable at the moment.

Whether luxury goods that slowly kill the planet should be available at all is a different question entirely that can't be solved in our current geopolitical system. There are ways to address this but it would require a complete global restructuring that goes way beyond what food as a human right would require.

I saw an old guy putting cans of Klik in his haversack. Then I saw him put a bag of carrots in as well. He also grabbed an 8-pack of double-A batteries and that's when I turned him in. /s

I mean it's 7.25 pounds of steak, thats a lot for a barbecue!

Do brits have barbecue, or was that eradicated after their war on flavors?

Steaks have always been a shoplifters choice. They're expensive, fit in your pants, drug dealers will take them

£7.25 is super expensive, I'd never buy a steak for more than £5 and even then I don't buy them usually.

In many other countries people are much poorer and don't end up stealing steaks from supermarkets. The issue is not finance but collapse of societal trust and Britain for once feels what they've been committing around the world for centuries.

On the other hand maybe meat is an extreme, unsustainable privilege that's inherently based on torturing/murdering animals and destroying the planet.

That sounds like something meat would say. You just don't want us eating meat because you are made of meat lol
