after 15 years, iOS has finally caught up with all the main android features, such as

  • very mid ui design
  • kinda floaty feeling
  • unpolished vibe android itself has progressed little, although it is rapidly achieving feature parity with iOS on "locked down user hostility". overall both ecosystems look very appealing, energetic, and healthy, for shareholders

Their biggest selling point is regulated app stores...

Completely ignoring the obvious downsides of letting private for profit corporations regulate marketplaces while facing no regulations themselves.

It's shit the government should be doing

sound of jail bars crashing shut as Android cuts all the indie developers out of the market

It’s shit the government should be doing

The joke of it all is that government does do stuff. But it's mostly to cement the existing duopoly.

Government contractors dump hundreds of billions of dollars into licensing for the dominant OS. Government regulators are fully captured by industry lobbyists, building their rules around policies the businesses have decided on internally. Policing agencies focus almost entirely on small fish, foreign developers, and whistleblowers. Courts use a one-size-fits-all financial punishment guidance, which can easily bankrupt a small business but is barely more than a speedbump for mega-corporations.

Nobody seriously talks about Breaking Up The Tech Companies via Antitrust Laws. Nobody talks about making Open-Source Code more regulatory friendly or investing more public dollars in Open-Source development / deployments. We can't even seriously talk about insourcing chip production or building out competitors to Intel and TSMC.

The Big Lie of modern left/right political discourse is that American political institutions are doing Too Much or Not Enough. The bitter truth is that if you're any kind of threat to the domestic business cartels... well... just ask TikTok what happens next.

They're really astroturfing youtube ads right now (I know, ick, youtube, and I should use plugins; I normally don't use it at all but lately I've had a couple songs I've been listening too on repeat. I should just download them).

Like, almost every fucking ad is "some apps are traps, can you spot the trap" with these stupid cartoony characters representing apps and suddenly one (at random, with no rhyme or reason) blows up and the narrator says "google play can."

Like fuck off, google play says whatever they want to say is a trap is a trap. Meanwhile they allow all these predatory BS apps on their store. They'll let you fall for the traps they approve of. And they won't even show you what country an app developer is based in until after you download it.

But they're trying to give people this false sense of security like "oh, I can trust anything on the play store" while also making them suspicious/hesitant to use any alternative app repos. It's clearly an attempt to manufacture consent for their ecosystem lockdown, and unfortunately it will probably work. They're targeting easily-influenced young people with these supposedly "cute" (yet honestly kinda gross) characters.

Their biggest selling point is regulated app stores…

Meaning it's not Wild West, apps need to be approved to be listed and consumers are generally able to trust what they install.

That is becoming less true due people being entrenched in one ecosystem or the other.

That is regulating a market....

Fixing it via regulation would require accountability and transpency. To sell on a goveerenment marketplace app developers would need an actual real life human to put their name on a line saying they're responsible if the app turns out to be malware.

Like, there's regulations for products already, you can't sell fire extinguishers to people that are filled with gasoline. You shouldn't be able to offer an app that will steal your identity or creditionals to other apps/sites.

Like, youre acting like words only mean one thing bro, you need to open your eyes and don't just always assume everything is what you first assume.

You can already write a desktop app to do all that malware stuff. Why give the phones and tablets special treatment?

Personally I like the iPhone and the App Store for the reason that it does go through some basic checks.

But as a dev, sometimes I just want to run my own shit on my own phone without hassle. (Yes I know there is dev mode. I don’t want to constantly run my main phone in dev mode just so I can run my own apps.)

IOS is soon to recognize that data can be stored in these things called "files" that are located in what's called a "folder" and maybe the user can even decide where on this thing called a "hard drive" these "files" and "folders" are located instead of typing into a random search bar.

It's always been like that. I had one of the first ipads as part of a trial to see if they were useful for grading papers in grad school. No. It was completely fucking useless because the only way to open files for editing was through sixteen shitty cloud services that each app wanted you to use. There was no way to just download files, edit them, and then put them back on blackboard like a normal fucking computer. The whole ordeal actually made me angry.

Not to "My generation good other generations bad," but Millennials and Gen X really grew up with technology as it was becoming impressively capable, but required a lot of technical know-how to use. It's really apparent in the workplace: our fresh-out-of-college guys and ready-for-retirement guys alike come to people around my age when stuff isn't working. Everything's too easy now, and it's hard to look under the hood. (Of course, there are still exceptions for enthusiasts, but you're never forced to tinker with a raspberry pi.)

When I used iOS last, a few years ago, photos were not considered files. (Yep... let that thought digest for a bit). This made things like SyncThing/Mobius useless. IIRC photos were managed through some separate API for "security reasons".

To access photos on a connected iDevice from a Linux machine, you need iFuse, and even then, iOS presents you all images at once. So your photos, received photos, downloads, screenshots, are all in one big pile. Have fun. Oh, but they are split into folders. By number.

If she just took photos they’re just in the photos app. But if she made something like with procreate or something then there’s just a normal file system you can access with the Files app. It’s all Unix under the hood, you can even install terminals and navigate around.

Companies are the new de facto legislators manufacturing narratives to push their ideas along. When that doesn't work, they simply use their overwhelming market share to push us there anyway, replacing our law with policy.

Nations that aren't instituting forced ID for internet use are still going to be pulled along for the ride unless they have their own digital systems to effectively replace US tech hegemony, and look how long it took to make two thoroughly "mid" mobile operating systems.

If you're worried about this sort of over reach, then consider trying a Linux distro on your phone, or a spare if you can afford it.

Replacing the complete ecosystem is going to take time and effort, and it's gonna suck but better now than never.

I've been an android user since I started using smart phones in the late 2000s. Android IMO has always been more user friendly and allowing someone to create their own "desktop" so to speak. Meanwhile Apple was always the "I don't like technology" phone. There was no customization, the "desktop" was just the Android app page and nothing else. Nothing could be unique to you outside of a wallpaper or a ringtone. Anyone with an iPhone just had an iPhone. It was the same thing. But someone with the same android phone could have different app placements, widgets here or there, and felt different even if it was the same phone.

Apologies for the rant, I am stoned as fuck and I ramble (And have a new keyboard I am trying to break in)

... But what has Apple "caught up to" all the "main android features"?

So I'm a dork because I have two weather widgets on my phone for hourly updates, and one for radar because I work outside? Or that I have a clock that shows my local time in Canada as well as the time in Zagreb, Croatia because my girlfriend lives there?

Is someone a dork who installs a new version of Windows who installs their games or makes folders for their finances add to the main wallpaper so they have easier access to their games or the folders for their finances?

From the perspective of a longtime hater of both iOS and Android:

  • very mid UI design:

I can’t press everything with one hand because the phone is too big (iOS “caught up“ to this a looong time ago with the iPhone 6)

  • kinda floaty feeling

The idea was that it would be customizable, the end result is that none of the menus feel “permanent.” As iOS has gotten more customizable, it now has this “feature” too.

  • unpolished vibe

iOS used to feel like it had very centralized design. Android was basically a bunch of different “Androids” doing a bunch of different stuff. Nowadays, iOS feels like it lacks focus as well.

The Fairphone 6 and 6+ is something to keep an eye on, specifically with TheMightyCat's build of postmarketOS. It's almost fully functional with a close-to-mainline kernel, unlike Jolla phones and UBPorts, which both rely on Android kernels which will eventually stop being supported.

It seems like TheMightyCat just generates code, which cannot be upstreamed to pmOS due to the policy on generated code.

Their generated code has been criticised by some kernel developers because of lack of quality. I think some sensors were accessed without using hexagonrpcd, which means battery usage will be unnecessarily high, which is an improper way of doing it.

Also, mainline kernel support is actively being worked on by Fairphone employees, which know the hardware best. All remaining features will be added in due time.

This is such an oversimplification and shows you don't understand how much work goes into this.

Their generated code has been criticised by some kernel developers because of lack of quality. I think some sensors were accessed without using hexagonrpcd, which means battery usage will be unnecessarily high, which is an improper way of doing it.

Again, any source for this argument with the hexagon processor? My patches has been plenty criticized by kernel developers, but so are fully manually written patches, which is the entire point of the kernel review process. Unless you seriously are saying that everyone on the list who has sent a v2 is a bad quality programmer.

When we were talking in DMs i again asked you for your source, reason, or any info for this so i can look at it and fix it if needed, but again you just result to throwing insults like you did in DM.

Also, mainline kernel support is actively being worked on by Fairphone employees, which know the hardware best. All remaining features will be added in due time.

They are being added, by me, by nondescriptpointer, by Luca, by the people at Qualcomm. I have good contact with them for this. I don't understand your grudge against me.

I know how much work goes into it, I'm doing mainlining work myself. It's really a lot of work.

Also, I have NOT had any conversation with you via DM.

I doubt I would start a DM conversation with you now that you are publishing lies about this. 🙄

I have good contact with them for this. I don't understand your grudge against me.

So far I had nothing against you as a person, but you are starting to change that rapidly.

This paragraph is anchored in the part where once again instead of any source or info on their argument and all they respond with is

There’s one question I have: What is your incentive in buying a Fairphone or contributing to an OS that allows phones to be used longer if you don’t care about our planet?

I have been daily driving linux phones as my only phone for over two years. Typing to you now from a phone I ported myself, which has been in my pocket for 3 months now.

Linux phones are where Linux desktops were 10 years ago. A few of us who are lucky can get away with using them because we don't require proprietary software on our personal devices, but many people will struggle without their Facebook app or their Garage Door Opening app or their Ford Connect app or whatever else. That said, SailfishOS has a decent compatibility layer, but it in itself is proprietary.

I watched it slowly become "the cheaper iOS" and Samsung becoming "the android of apple".

But the recent final proverbial nail was their most recent lockdown. Fuck you google. Fuck you since you dropped "don't be evil" to become Satan itself. At least apple never tried to appear "open".

"just". If you have no problem with being treated like a child, on your own device, then yes. "Just 24hrs". And btw...that's 24hrs, FOR NOW. Testing if the resistance is even worth considering (which it won't be).

Being treated like a child is subjective, however. And, superuser features are really not for everyone. Anyways, the best way to fight for this is being loud. The only reason Google gave the 24 hour unblock anyway was due to the community. And, if another person chooses Apple, let them be. Google should know what the differentiating factor Android has and blur the difference then just go buy an iPhone.

Not everyone loves leaving the house, yet you would probably prefer if you always could. Should you decide to do so. It's your house after all. You'd probably feel like a grounded kid if police wouldn't allow you to step outside.

I don't share your optimism. Being loud is irrelevant if you're a small minority and the majority doesn't care or doesn't even see a problem here (or where it will inevitably lead to).

Yes, the reason to go Apple was never better. Even for an Apple-hater like me. The said differentiating factor diminishes...

You need to buy an "unlocked" model. They sell carrier-locked devices at a discount so that they can install spyware on them, and then lock them down so you can't remove it or take it to another carrier.

I've run into that a couple times and it's super frustrating because there's 2 different types of "unlocked", and they're pretty much all carrier unlocked these days, where an AT&T SIM card will work in a Verizon branded device, but the Verizon ones for sure never allow OEM unlocking. If buying new from Google, I've always bought the "Unlocked" option. If buying used, I've given the seller instructions on how to check that the option is available. At least on Swappa, it's been a pretty painless process.

Has Apple improved Siri yet? When I asked Siri "What are humans made of?", she answered "Humans are made of human body." Fkn hilarious. Meanwhile Android phones have had Gemini for a long time now. And now Apple is giving up on developing their own AI models and will be paying Google to use Gemini for Siri. Might as well just pay less for an Android phone and get the same Gemini model.
