My mind always goes to that one scene in Roots where, below decks on the slaver ship, the captured slaves-to-be stage a revolt and resolve to swim to the bank of the river the ship is sailing on. They succeed in reaching the top deck, a masterpiece of planning, only to become dazed both by the daylight as well as the fact there was no riverbank in sight.
Those poor bastards were from inland, had probably never been more than a few miles from their villages. They literally couldn't conceive of something as large as the Atlantic ocean.

ICE is the modern day Gestapo.
Not sure if that's a negative thing in their eyes though.
Maybe 30% of ICE personnel would understand that being the gestapo represents a “branding problem,” maybe 1% are ethical enough to feel bad about it but not enough to quit.

For anyone who is undocumented (and people who are documented!), it's important to know your rights regarding ICE:
- Don’t open the door for ICE. They aren’t allowed into your house or workplace without a warrant signed by a judge.
- Ask them to leave.
- Stay silent. Do not talk to them without a lawyer.
- If you ask you your immigration status, your citizenship status, etc, don’t tell them anything. Don’t even speak to them.
- Even if you’re a citizen, still don’t tell them anything. ICE destroys communities, and every second of their time you waste is one less second they will spend destroying people’s lives.
- If you are detained, ask to talk to your lawyer. Note that ICE doesn’t provide lawyers so make sure you get one in preparation.
- Do not sign anything or give them any documents whatsoever without a lawyer in that room.
I'm guessing they said this to make ICE waste resources going after them. Of course, Trump wants to be able to deport citizens, too.
