wow the 5th element for me too. Always thought I was weird but his movie is great
also tropic thunder lol
What's a movie you can watch often and it never gets old?
a year ago by chunes to c/asklemmy
The Big Lebowski. Simultaneously ridiculous and incredibly sophisticated. People who think its "just" a stoner comedy may have some more viewings to go š
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
I never realized it was considered a stoner comedy! It's quite a bit better than one I've seen in that category!
It gets the stoner comedy reputation as the dude is stoned throughout. He's a character in the movie though, not then full tone. That's probably why it's so good. It blends so many genres with an interesting interweaving plot and wonderful dialogue.
It's a deserved reputation as it's great to watch stoned. Especially when the dude is confused and so are you. Or the psychedelic sequences. However it's also not deserved as it's so much cleverer than that with differen levels. A stoner comedy doesn't normally have a coherent plot and levels.
Interesting. When my husband suggested we watch it, ages ago really early on in our relationship, I had asked him what category it was. I also asked him just now. Just now he went "Oh that's difficult but broadly speaking it's a comedy". I said "I asked that question of you when you showed it to me like 15 years ago. So you know what you said then?" "No, what did I say then?" "You called it a dark comedy because someone died" (because I was and am sensitive to that) He nodded and said "Makes sense"
I donāt think the Dude could be his illegitimate son since thatās part of the reason Maude referred him to that doctor. He wouldnāt have been very āthoroughā if he missed that they were related.
That's going off the deep end for me. I prefer the interpretation that its a video essay on masculinity. "What makes a man a man?" is the central tenet of that movie, and personally, knowing that was a really crystallizing moment that made all the bullshit fall aside. I read a beautifully succinct essay about this somewhere and will look for the link.
Roll tide.
Office Space
I could set the building on fire....
I raise you The Holy Grail.
The Meaning of Life; Jabberwocky & Brazil if you're adventurous (Gilliam's hand directing, these last 2).
Groundhog Day
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Megamind
Pirates of the Caribbean (2003)
The Princess Bride
The thing about Groundhog Day is that you only have to watch it once to have seen it several times.
Idiocracy
Thereās something about that close-to-home dystopian outlook that calms me. Now go away, Iām batinā!
I like money.
I liked it a long time ago, but last time I watched it I didn't enjoy it nearly as much. The eugenics annoys me far more than it used to, and most of the humor is just crass and doesn't have a meaning. They aren't using it to say anything larger.
Meanwhile the themes of the movie are anti-capitalist (sort of, without the philosophy of considering why it causes issues) and anti-populist. It has something to say, but I feel like they're far too careful to say it. Its got a veil of critique, but without wanting to make too many waves, because it's still a big budget capitalist movie at the end of the day.
I feel like it makes a lot of people feel smug and turns them into reactionary anti-establishment conspiracy theorists, because it only says "this is bad and stupid" but doesn't give you anywhere to go with that.
I have not, but Iāll check it out some time. The trailer makes me think of NBK.
Natural Born Killers. I think itās the whole ākiller duoā and cultural obsessions that linked them together for me.
But itās been a while since I watched NBK, too, so maybe Iāll have to do these two back to back!
The good old Blues Brothers boys.
"No, ma'am, we're musicians."
Hack the planet!
CLI + VR and specially GPUs to be able to hack in those UI... For a moment while watching Superman (2025) I had those flashbacks (Luthor's employees in fight scenes).
Shit I haven't seen the new Superman, is it any good?
I'm also giggling at the thought of spending that kind of money on a VR headset just to use for a console lol
Shit I havenāt seen the new Superman, is it any good?
It's fair. ::: spoiler spoiler I still can't believe that many people in the US were complaining about Superman's principles... :::
Lord of the Rings
Die Hard
Romulus is better than it has any right to be. The Alien 3 āAssembly Cutā is also decent. Not good, but not awful.
Big Trouble In Little China.
Marathon Man [Dustin Hoffman, Lawrence Olivier] seems to have been designed for multiple viewings. A character seen briefly in one scene turns up later in the movie. A quick telephone call becomes incredibly important but you have to be paying close attention to every minute.
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Princess Bride
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Hot Fuzz
The Big Lebowski
Clue.
Sometimes my friends and I just sit around quoting it until we've made it through the entire movie, so maybe there's no point in rewatching it, but we do anyway.
For me it's The Matrix.
I never like to retread old ground, but this one's an exception. It's hard to overstate how much it blew our minds 26 years ago. I might have a soft spot for it too because I was raised sheltered and it was the first rated R movie I saw.
It's a shame they didn't make any sequels. The creators probably decided it was a complete story rather than milk it to death like Star wars. Guess that's for the best!
I saw The Matrix a few times in theaters and watched it regularly when the dvd came out.
Liar, liar.
Nearly every single line in that movie that Jim Carrey delivers is not only funny but his delivery and antics are a work of art. It's like watching Messi dribble the soccer ball. Cary ewles gets an honorary mention for playing the straightman and absolutely killing it.
The Thing (1982)
Itās my favorite movie of all time and I watch it every October.
Looks like i just found my people.
Super troopers
Harold and Kumar go to white castle
Ghost busters
Kung Fury
Rear windows is such a fantastic film. It surprised me how well it holds up.
Super cliche answer but:
The Shawshank Redemption
Big Lebowski
Station Agent
LOTR Triology
Office Space
Jurassic Park
UHF
For me is the Back to the Future trilogy but I usually watch just the first one..every year
Same! I usually watch the first one once a year, but I try to get the fully trilogy in.
Snatch
I think I like more Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Lord of the Rings (whole trilogy)
Jurassic Park
Tropic Thunder
Escape from New York
Zombieland
The Crow
Ironically enough, Groundhog Day.
Sabrina
Galaxy Quest
Fifth Element
Joe vs the Volcano
Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist
LOTR Two Towers (extended, for more Ents)
Jurassic Park
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Harry Potter films
Joe Versus The Volcano.
Also another vote for The Princess Bride
Kill Bill
What I wouldnāt give for Tarantinoās single-film supercut. š
Bill and Tedās Excellent Adventure
Mrs. Doubtfire
Jurassic Park
Office space
Mean girls
The devil wears prada
Emperor's new groove
Lilo & stitch
Wall-E (and most Pixar movies)
Airplane
Monty Python and The Holy Grail
Edit: forgot about Ghibli movies, watch them constantly too, specially spirited away and totoro
Apollo 13 Hot Fuzz Shawshank Redemption Forrest Gump
When I'm sad or depressed, I rewatch Inside out (1 or 2) and it puts me in a content and indifferent headspace.
No way you could pay me to go near Inside Out 1 when I'm sad. I cant even re-watch that at my best without having a breakdown. That is brave.
Well, way better then No Child of Mine(1997). As I'm a victim of child abuse (although not sexual), it really screwed with me. But if you're in a decent mood, I would recommend it.
Gone in Sixty Seconds.
Moneyball.
Addendum: Kung Fu Panda
Hey hey, check this out! Check this out! Sheās a brick. Nuh nuhnuh. Hooooouse!
Both based on books by the same dude! Something I didn't realize for quite some. I need to go read his shit.
Coen Bros. films.
Ghostbusters. Absolute perfection.
Yes, it's true, this man has no dick.
Are you, Alice, menstruating right now?
Whatās that got to do with this?
Back off man! Iām a scientist!
Listen... Do you smell something?
Hilarious. I was going to give that quote but went with the menstruation one instead.
Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eighth Dimension.
It's the quintessential 80s movie.
Idiocracy
Rat Race
Hot Tub Time Machine
Tropic Thunder
Good Will Hunting
Before Sunrise
Before Sunset
Before Midnight
What we do in the shadows
I have plenty more but this is just off the top of my head.
No matter what I watch, I get old regardless :(
White Chicks
Mean Girls
The Devil Wears Prada
The Proposal
I like to shut my brain off and have simple entertainment that doesnāt require much thinking during watching watch time.
My favourite movie of all time is Enemy 2013 and Black Swan but these are movies that go under your skin and everytime I watch them I have to go into spirals of overthinking etc while the above mentioned movies donāt give me that.
Ghost in the shell (anime movies).
Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Bottle Rocket (1996)
Early Wes Anderson movie has such a good vibe and always seems just what I needed when I put it onā¦
Harry potter 1-7
Ready Player One
Most Villenueve movies are very rewatchable for me. Sicario, BR2049, Arrival, and the Dune films. Others like Incendies, Enemy, and Prisoners not as much, not because they are bad, but because they are pretty heavy to be watched repeatedly.
Harry Potter series The Matrix Tangled The Wolf of Wallstreet Coraline
1 Night in Paris
I must have seen Old School at least twenty times.
It was pretty much the perfect movie before streaming services existed and you were too lazy to go to the video store or P2P-download another movie because you'd rather hang out on your friends' couch and smoke weed all day.
Seven Psychopaths
Le grand blond avec une chaussure noire (1972)
Death Race 2000. There has never been a more flawless film.
Ace ventura 2: when nature calls
The LOTR trilogy
The Emperors new groove
Hercules (origional animated disney version)
A Knights Tale
Hot Fuzz
the nice guys apocalypse now zodiac green mile closer kings speech anything Villeneuve has made more or less
Six String Samurai
Foodfight!
The Seventh Seal
If I had to pick the two movies furthest away from each other in every way imaginable, it would be these two movies. You have broad tastes haha š
I don't know about never, but I've watched numerous times:
Come on dog, that movie sucked.
Huh. Haven't ran across that expression before. Halloween was always queer, I thought. (Dress up and be whoever you want to be, etc.) Halloween and happy fireworks day are my favorite holidays.
