The NRA is frantically running the numbers to see what will increase public fear, and thus sales figures for the gun companies, the most.

What they are referring to is electrolytic etching (et al). Yes, you can get something approximating what is essentially tapping a thread, but I can pretty much guarantee you that anyone doing this in a shed isn't getting that level of precision and is, arguably, doing a worse job than not rifling at all. The folk who DO know how to do this have access to machine shops... and the tools to do it correctly.

Regardless, the real problem is making the barrel in the first place. Anyone who bought a mini lathe or got a drill press on facebook marketplace thinks they can do this. They chew threw mild steel like butter! And... there are a LOT of recovered guns from The Troubles in Ireland that fractured or literally exploded after even moderate use. Because you need proper alloys to handle the pressures of repeated explosions AND need to machine it in a way that is less likely to fracture/chip the parts containing that pressure. And drilling through THAT takes much better gear and skills that go beyond "Only an idiot wears gloves"

Also... it is irrelevant to the topic of Ghost Guns. Because, in almost all cases, barrels (and springs and levers) are not controlled items. So you print what is controlled and buy a parts kit for the rest.

I'm pretty sure you can find videos on it on YouTube, but it essentially boils down to creating an array of copper wire in the shape of the rifling, inserting that into the barrel liner, then putting the whole thing into the bucket and hooking the wire up to electricity. This then slowly etches the rifling into the liner through electrolysis.

As much as it has zero chance of ever happening, he pushed for a max 10% on credit card debt. It’d all but destroy some banks, and people that dont have excellent credit would largely have zero credit availability, but I think it’s a good idea.

Credit cards is a money trickling up system. Banks charge the sellers and give a rebate to their customers. Sellers increase their price to compensate for the credit card fees.
And then the poor are denied credit cards and pay the marked-up price on everything, or are given credit cards knowing they will fail to pay back on time at some point and then pay huge interests.
It would be better for most if that system disappeared or was at least severely trimmed down!

in the hands of untrained people with no background checks

In the context and language of the time, "well regulated" essentially meant "properly trained in their use" so there's a constitutional argument to be made for mandatory firearms training as a prerequisite gun ownership. That's...not going to reduce shootings in the ways you might expect, since a large portion of shootings are not done with legally owned guns to begin with, and there's no good reason organized crime (think gang and/or narcotics related, connected is why a few dozen counties account for something like 4 in 10 homicides) would use guns legally registered to themselves.

Would probably reduce the suicide rate though - anything that breaks the immediacy between wanting to do it and trying to do it tends to.

An important step up on the whole issue would be making gun owners legally liable for any crimes committed with a firearm they own, even if it's stolen unless the theft was reported beforehand and there is clear evidence that it was properly secured at the time of theft. You steal your father's rifle and go shoot up your school and he's on the hook for the murders too. Would make a bunch of folks much more concerned about properly securing their arms, which would further reduce the suicide rate if nothing else and put a dent in the "lone nutter shoots up their school" types as well.

It's a fun take, and Lemmy is a bit of an echo chamber, so let me enlighten you all on how that would kind of go:

The MAGA crowd is a combination of idiocy, brain damage, and then dark tetrad people.

They don't care if their cult leader is hypocritical, they'll defend everything he says, even if it hurts their own interests; they'll cherry pick, gaslight, and deny basic facts.

When you see them from a point of clinical detachment, their behavior makes a kind of twisted sense. The mistake is the assumption that they're just like you, and can be reasoned with or moved using empathy. Their worldview is fundamentally different, and typically only changes via direct experience: "leopards ate my face". Sometimes not even then.

It's downright infuriating at times because it reminds me of that antisemitism quote:

Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

They will absolutely defend him. There was a clip that went viral a few weeks back from a podcast where leftist children chat politics with their MAGA parents and the seriously MAGA-pilled father said (paraphrasing here) that he'd be okay with his son getting shot and killed because of Trump because Trump must've had a good reason to order whatever killed his son.

You can also go to the leopardsatemyface community where you regularly see Trump supporters get fucked by Trump only to have them say they'll still support Trump.

They're also justifying the murders of American citizens with the "just obey. If you agitate them and you get killed that's your fault".

I'm not saying give up. I'm saying some parts of MAGA (hard to say how much) are so lost in the sauce I don't know what Trump would have to do to get them to change their mind.

Trump has been contentious among the pro gun crowd. He has supported red flag laws and instituted the bump stock ban. I don't think this is him being inconsistent.

If I were a left leaning gun owner in the States, I would offer the same rhetoric the right has been spewing every time sensible gun control is attempted:

MOLON LABE.

I highly doubt the US will ban guns. Firsy because there would be a lot of blowback. Secondly, one does not simply remove an amendment.

Well the first, fourth, fourteenth, and a few others are now defacto gone. Not sure what you are going on about.

They'll ban guns the exact same way they implemented gun control: with racial implications and fear mongering at the idiot level, and subtle winking to each other at the politician level. Then they'll slowly add on each time they 'find' a new group to demonize and target. It's 'first they came for...' in practice.

They can ban them. But that doesn't mean guns will be gone. As I said, blowback.

LOL. All the brave gun nuts going on about "armed againts tyranny" for the last 50 years and now that a Fascist is ruling the country they are at home "polishing their barrels".

A constitution is just a piece of paper.

Did you know: In China, Freedom of Speech is actually in their constitution? But guess what actually happens in practice.

No one in their right mind would "ban guns". There are far too many, it makes no sense.

That's what a lot of US Americans don't seem to grasp. Maybe because they are used to live in democracy for generations (at least white males) they think of it as some kind of eternal unchangeable feature of nature.

I was born in China so I think I have a right to talk about it

Oppressive government, yes absolutely.

The CCP tried to stop me from being born because I was the 2nd child in my faily and they forcibly sterilized my mother for violating one child policy.

Hukou System effectively being "internal border control" system that would deny you rights if your ancestry is rural.

I was born in Guangzhou City, same as my older brother, my parents worked in Guangzhou, but we were denied the right to be enrolled in their public schools (that's after the one child policy fine has already been paid) because we inherited our parents Taishan (rural) Hukou so parents had to pay for some shitty privately-run school which was worse than public ones. 2nd class resident BS, just like the US's system of exploiting undocumented immigrants, except PRC does this to its own citizens.

You can ackowledge multiple government's oppression simultaneously. It's not a competition of "which is more oppressive", both can be at the same time.

I mean, the 18th amendment is basically just a footnote in modern terms, but it had to be repealed by the 21st amendment, so make of that what you will.

Yeah. Good thing they haven't been violating the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, and 10th amendments constantly without consequence.

The only reason they haven't violated the 3rd is because they manage to find administration-friendly hotels, and the 7th is actually kinda difficult for them to violate.

The US wont ban guns but it has nothing to do with what Trump wants, the moment he blurts out he wants to ban them his caretakers will send someone in that appears intelligence in Trumps perspective and they will convince him otherwise.
