'This affair is far from over': Disney shareholders are now revolting over Jimmy Kimmel
9 months ago by Skavau to c/television
Sinclair has been talked about now and then for a while for their right wingedness. John Oliver has some stuff on them and their control over local media markets.
Nexstar is sucking up as they want federal regulations removed, as they're at the legal limit for how many stations they can own to avoid a media monopoly. They want to merge with another local media company and double their amount of stations, giving them control of the majority of the country's local stations.
This is why these 2 groups are helping to try to take out the president's enemies.
Those might be the best weapon for anyone minimally trained. They have good reach but aren't super heavy. It's hard to lose grip with both hands. And it's obvious how they work and simple to execute -- keep the sharp end away from yourself and close to your enemy.
Stick them with the pointy bit.
Its time to break up the monopoly there and the fcc should not be allowing an exception for their merger, which puts them over double the max limit if owned affiliates. Maybe a protest to the fcc is needed
If anyone claiming to be progressive ends up in charge again anytimes soon, they better not act short on ideas on what needs a major overhaul. Things like this or Democrats being fine with Republican immigration control better not fly under the radar anymore.
Imagine a Democratic version of Project 2025.
It'd be requests for equality, free education, healthcare, universal income.
There's simply no way that would be allowed to happen.
It was all about the affiliates. The FCC made threats, Nexstar pre-empted Kimmel. In response to Nexstar, ABC suspended Kimmel. Then Sinclair piled on, trying to get Kimmel fired.
Yes, but it was in their own interest. Nexstar is trying to get the FCC to increase the ownership limits to allow them to own 80 stations instead of the 40 now allowed. Also ABC will require FCC and DOJ approval for its purchase of NFL Media and NFL gaining 10% ownership over ESPN. So they didn’t need much pressure.
This has been a huge win for Kimmel, and Free Speech. When he returned, he not only didn't apologize, he went HARD after Brendan Carr and Trump.
Clearly, what happened is that the public outcry against ABC was enormous, and ferocious. They are a broadcast TV network that has had an FCC license as long as there have been FCC licenses. They have a responsibility to uphold the First Amendment, and they folded so fast, and so easily, that those who made that decision should all be fired. And America let them know that in far, far bigger numbers than they expected.
The "talks" that they were having with Kimmel were almost certainly him telling them how this was going to go, because he held ALL the cards. He had the law, the Constitution, and ALL of America on his side. He even had MAGAs on his side. He was negotiating from a position of Ultimate Power. He was going to say whatever he wanted, and they weren't going to have any say in it.
This was a battle between MAGA and Free Speech, and Free Speech won big. It was also a battle between Trump and Kimmel, and Kimmel won big, although I prefer to think of it as TRUMP LOST BAD. He was gloating that he had destroyed Kimmel, and now Kimmel is not only back, he is stronger, and more popular than ever, for having won this battle. It will be far more difficult for Trump to fight this sort of battle again. Now that the other networks have seen it play out, they won't succumb to pressure and threats so easily.
TRUMP LOST BIGGLY
Sadly he die apologize in a way though. Did this whole bs about how he didnt want to make fun of his death and almost crying saying that. It was pathetic. The only good think Charlie Kirk ever did was die early and that should be celebrated, not cried over.
Read the original joke that Kimmel got suspended for. It wasn't about Charlie Kirk. He never celebrated CK's death in any way, but he did highlight the predictable MAGA responses and hypocrisy whenever there is another heinous gun fatality, and that's always fair game.
What did he say?
He didn't retract anything or express regret (because there was nothing to retract or regret). He did explain what he meant.
So, as I understand, in the classical meaning, that is an apology. But in the contemporary meaning, it is not.
https://www.merriam-webster.com/...
The word's earliest meaning in English was “something said or written in defense or justification of what appears to others to be wrong or of what may be liable to disapprobation."
...
So we may instead ask when did the apology start meaning “I’m sorry”?
edit: He also expressed sympathy. Or empathy. I suck at telling the difference.
"That was really the opposite of the point I was trying to make, but I understand that felt either ill-timed or unclear, or maybe both. And for those who think I did point a finger, I get why you're upset. If the situation was reversed, there's a good chance I'd have felt the same way.
An apology acknowledges the wrong, why it was wrong, and especially a pledge to not repeat it.
He did none of those things, especially the last one.
It's easy! Sympathy is for when you've had a similar experience and have felt the feelings the other party feels. Empathy is when you haven't felt the same feelings, but still feel for the other party.
Mixed, What the right wanted out of him was groveling and pain. He certainly didn't do that.
Most of the mid/left wanted to see him come out and say I'm back bitches and you were all wrong, I didn't do shit and that guy who has been on video praising the necessity of gun violence got FAFO'd.
He didn't do that either.
He clarified that he was fired over a nothingburger and whose fault it was and repeated his empathy for the family and how horrible the situation was.
At the very least disney deserved more of a FU, but when neither side gets what they want, and shit returns to normal, negotiations are probably as good as they get.
We'd like to see the Horst Wessel they're building be dismantled. But that's not going to happen here. We're still going to trudge along in the deep red zone of history.
They're Disney shareholders... They were already revolting.
I think it's spelled "arrr". 🏴☠️
Isn't that where they keep the Holy Grail?
Huh. Must've died while posting it
Oh no, what did HBO do, are they tied in with them somehow?
kinda beyond frustrating that there's more outrage over a comedian who got his start through an absurdly sexist and misogynistic show than there was over the win or lose episode that was already filmed and ready and changed the character into a cis character.
I disagree - the US government, at least the conservative side, heavily curated their followers against a significant number of freedoms associated with queer and BIPOC folk. They played a very large role in creating the harmful, hateful aura that is the reason for US corporations' erasure of those types of people. Cultivating hatred, manifesting as misogyny / homophobia / racism / nationalism / polarisation, is one of the most famous traits of US national and/or local leadership. They are responsible for inspiring other countries to persecute innocent people.
You can argue the cultural changes and political changes of government caused Disney to make a decision out of an abundance of caution - but there was no effort, no phone call, no threat of retaliation to Disney if they chose to air that episode. This is not the same as the Kimmel situation.
No, it's not. While Disney refuses to be transparent, I'm sure the audience for Win or Lose was far lower than Kimmel's 2m per episode
However
The lack of action with WoL was partially caused by the political influence. A systemic issue permeates every aspect of life.
Well, I've never heard of Win or Lose so it's pretty challenging to get riled up over it.
Also not where he got his start. Kimmel was on the Win Ben Steins Money game show before The Man Show and radio before that.
see, you say that, but I don't think you realize how stupid Americans are.
My stepfather did not think it was satire, or a joke. He loved that show and thought the jokes were hilarious. "woman be shopping" etc. I hated that man.
That's kinda the whole point of satire. Fools arent supposed to get the joke, because they ARE the joke.
Also, what little I know of Adam Carolla these days, I'm not sure it was satire to him.
than there was over the win or lose episode that was already filmed and ready and changed the character into a cis character.
Did I miss this Kimmel ep? I know I've missed a few.
They're referring to Disney's decision to change a trans character to cis in the Pixar show Win or Lose. While it's pretty clear that Trump being elected played a part, as it happened in December, Trump wasn't even in office yet, so this was Disney being transphobic in anticipation of the incoming fascist overlords. Not really the same situation at all.
okay, so completely unrelated to the topic at hand? I feel better about being confused, then. Thanks!
Win or Lose is apparently the title of a different show. I've never heard of it either.
it's actually really good. Short sweet 8 episodes.
All about the same day but from the perspectives and lives of different people and the different challenges they face. Anxiety, confidence, responsibility, maturity... I am pissed that they altered one of the episodes regarding a trans kid and their fears of being true to their authentic self to instead a sort or stress of living up to expectations... but still it's worth the watch.
Especially if you have kids.
They were already revolting LONG before that.
How can the people who hold absolute power "revolt" in any way?
Yay the slave masters are the good guys!
Wouldn't you like to know weather boy?
Well you should give a damn about the first amendment, because that’s really what’s at play here, and if the government goes unchallenged in being able to shutdown free speech, you best believe you’ll care then. But if they do succeed, it’ll be too late at that point. So yes, you do care about Jimmy Kimmel and Charlie Kirk right now.
We have several generations of narrow-minded fools whose sole purpose is I.
Is it a direct impact they can see or feel in the next 15 minutes? If not, who cares!
That's the problem we face now.
Our cancer has definitely metastasized.
The fact that they're from the Netherlands, judging by their instance, makes it especially rich when you consider their current political situation. Our shit is indeed contagious.
Yeah you came into the comments of an article about an American problem so you could be a complete idiot
American issues are constantly being shoved down the rest of the world’s throats, and it’s actually annoying to those of us who don’t live there. Shocking, I know, but how dare I have the audacity to be annoyed by it.
It's not our fault people aren't posting enough non-US content for your tastes. You've posted a grand total of 5 threads over the entire lifetime of your account, and none of them were news articles. So quit your bitching when you've done nothing to help!
So you clicked on a link, then clicked a reply button, then entered in some text, then clicked post... on subject you don't care about? You've done this multiple times on a thread about a subject you say you don't care about.
I usually just scroll past the things I don't care about.
Then Why are you even commenting?
Haha ego so big that it's attributing its own traits everywhere
The fact you are here says otherwise.
A news article being posted is not demanding you care.
No, people are well aware. I think moreso from the outside. It's just the usual behviour of Americans looking to their feeds for what to think and feel in the moment. They aren't planning on doing much about it, or look at much else, just complain in the comment sections of the feeds, if at all. That's how they've been for decades. It's the culture.
A very easy and harmless public to shepherd. Decades of being hoodwinked into dumb shit, never all that upset enough to deviate from the same old playbooks. Probably the last time they ever did something and won was Prohibition. You can kind of get away with anything there because the public is no issue. Whether a government administration or a corporation. The public will complain, sure, they always do. But look at that current trajectory. It's never faltered.
So, yeah, we'll see what's coming up next and see how quickly the last things are forgotten by the new shiny.
And it isn't necessarily you, I'm just pointing out the state of late-20th century til now and how the culture continues to be more and more "the American way."

Kimmel pressures Trump, Trump pressures ABC, ABC capitulates, subscribers pressure ABC, ABC capitulates, ABC affiliates revolt, shareholders pressure ABC...
I didn't hear about the affiliates revolting, siding with Trump though, that's an interesting tidbit.
