If your wind power charged a battery and you hooked up to it nightly with your electric car, it could. Certainly if the municipal grid uses wind power.
However, while the E15 rollout can lower prices, ethanol does contains less energy than gasoline, so eventually with E15, a driver will end up burning more fuel for the same amount of distance, albeit fuel which is slightly cheaper than standard gasoline.

Most vehicles made past about 2004 are all ethanol safe up to maybe E20. You ideally shouldn't, but e15 won't ruin them.

I monitor gas mileage in my truck pretty closely. Even resetting the fuel trims and running a couple tanks, E15 doesn't really change mine that much over E10, maybe 1 mile per gallon less. Now on the other hand E85 is closer to 5-6mpg less. It all depends on how much less it costs at the time, but overall E15 is slightly cheaper for my use case. Any savings I might have is more than taken away by filling up my equipment, diesel is crazy now and no ethanol gas is right behind it.

You absolutely need a tune for e85 exclusively. You can throw a few gallons in to fix some timing issues but I'm pretty sure you need to adjust ignition timing to keep your afr in range to run it exclusively.
E85 is rarely actually e85 so an ethanol content analyzer is usually required to adjust the ecu accordingly. It's not just higher octane, all that does is allow for higher compression at a similar temp.

Even then though the unfortunate crux of the matter is that rare earth metals are an increasingly vital component of all future technology and the biggest deposits of those are all very inconveniently placed from a US perspective (almost exclusively within the territory of countries the US has a somewhat poor relationship with).

Maybe the goal of using E85 was not to make a car get better fuel economy, but instead to reduce dependence on foreign oil, reduce the carbon footprint from cars, and reduce the cost per mile to run the car?
I don't know if E85 actually does those things in the long run (there is some debate based on studies that don't take the whole lifecycle of the car and it's fuel into account) but calling an option stupid based on on a goal it was never intended to meet seems silly.
Also, in E85 cars, the main differences are that the rubber components are made from a different material that the fuel doesn't corrode, and they have an engine computer that can adjust the engine to run on E85. They work perfectly fine with regular fuel as well.
To be fair the idea there is that with the extensive corn subsidies, E85 should be significantly cheaper than pure fossil fuel.
Issue is, even with subsidies, ethanol costs a bunch of money to produce. Farming costs go up too when diesel goes up.

I don’t think many people on here are into classic cars much, but if they allow more ethanol in gas that’s going to fuck up a pretty large amount of classic cars. Modern fuel lines are plastic to deal with the ethanol and impact resistance. before that we used rubber, and the current widely used (cheap) replacement fuel hose tolerates ethanol at the levels we had well enough for a few years.
So there’s a decent chance this would burn down a bunch of cars (and boats) when the fuel lines dissolve from the ethanol and start spilling gas.
It's not just classic cars, cars from the 2000s have rubber fuel lines as well.

Good news, you're not fucked. Your car has been running on roughly 10-15% ethanol its entire life. If you havnt had problems yet, you likely won't. Unless they go full stupid and put an absurd amount in of ethanol in, then it won't effect most cars on the road today.

E10 should be okay but check your owner’s manual or ask someone who knows more.
The main problem with ethanol in rubber fuel lines is that ethanol causes hardening and flaking of the rubber. Long before it ever gets bad enough to leak the little flakes of hardened rubber detatch from the inside of the line and travel down to fuel pumps, injectors, and carburators. Where they clog up all the small metered orifices that regulate the amount of fuel the engine is getting. This can lead to the car just not running or running poorly, to the internal components of the engine breaking or seizing, thus trashing the whole engine.
I thought most of those boats sunk/vehicles burned from the first round of ethanol addition? Any fiberglass fuel tank went to the bottom eventually as I understand it.
If you're driving a classic car in the middle of a gas crisis, you kinda deserve it, imo. Those things are about the only thing more inefficient than a jacked up pavement princess.

"Classic car" isn't just some vibe. It's literally a legal term for cars of a certain age. Depending on the country it refers to >15, >20 or >25 years old cars. That means you can have a relatively fuel efficient car that is considered a classic car.
The first Toyota Prius came out 1997 (29 years ago) and would be considered a classic car today.

Yeah, in the EU there's a law that petrol has to be 10% non-fossil energy for 95 and 5% for 98 IIRC. Now, most stations skirt by it by producing "green" natural gas or just buying clean energy certificates or whatever it is they do, but when the law came out, there was a big deal because it turns out a lot of older cars aren't cleared for E10. I imagine even fewer are for E15.
It's not so much that it'd kill the engine. That's unlikely to happen for MOST engines. What it will do is destroy the fuel hoses. And if you have a stupid early direct injection petrol engine with a membrane based high pressure fuel pump (fuck you, GM! I think a few others used that design too though), that pump's not gonna like ethanol. If the high pressure fuel pump fails and your engine runs lean, that might indeed kill an engine though.

In Estonia, they straight up recommended getting alkylate petrol for lawn mowers and such when the law came that 95 should be 10% ethanol and 98 5%. That stuff is pretty expensive. But since the law had a loophole in it, nearly no chain sells ethanol in their fuels at this point (though there are a few that will sell you high ethanol content fuel for racecar use, I think it was E85)

GM's Z22YH can't handle it for an example. Opel used it in the Zafira B and Vectra C up till 2010. Once you upgrade it to use Renault's F5R engine's high pressure fuel pump for better reliability, it'll work, since Renault/Bosch engineers were sober when it was designed, as opposed to GM/Siemens.
There are a few other manufacturers who claim their cars made in the 00s or early 10s don't take E10, but I cba to look for the list. To me that's still "remotely modern" since I grew up poor enough that my first car was older than myself lol

Technically I don't think you should regularly leave fuel in that long even if it's ethanol free. Though I've never had bad fuel kill any of my equipment, oddly enough. I've got a rototiller that gets used twice a year and it doesn't even take the entire tank each time and I've never drained it. I've only used ethanol free on it though.

I have to admit: I know very little of GM engines, and they sell very few cars here. It's becoming even less relevant as EV's are just dominating completely, passing 97% here last month.
For me personally it's the snow blower and motorcycles, but both of those are new enough to handle E10. I still give them 98 as they sometimes have to sit idle due to weather, and we have winter from October to April.
I've heard the same about petrol being stored, but I've never had issues either. At least a year seems to be more than OK, but that is always 98.
95 E10 might be worse as it absorbs water over time...

Yeah I only run 98 (Australia, no ethanol) in my MK6 golf. I'd love to be able to run E85 or E10 but that requires new hoses and an ECU tune. I'd do the hardware myself and have a shop handle the ECU, however time is such a valuable thing these days.
98 around here is approx 2.15 / L or 5.80~ per galon. E85 is similar in price to 98, while E10 is around 1.70.

If that's in AUD, people round here would kill for that. We're at about 1.80 euros per liter here, but it goes above 2 every now and then. Diesel and Petrol are roughly the same price and no real difference between 95 and 98 either.
Our fuel prices are subsidized by the government currently. They were climbing for a while when I was walking / riding so I'm not over how mad they had become. Back in the car during rain / shit weather but prices seem much more acceptable currently.

My vehicle will take E85 and I've tried it just to save money. Stick with regular gasoline what you save at the pump will cost you in far more refills. Horrible gas mileage
I'm so fucking confused, man. I'm a tech guy. I've spent my whole life getting good with computers, I know very little about cars, and I just can't keep up. I've heard that yeah ethanol is bad but put in your tank what the manual says because if your engine isn't designed for "high-octane" fuel (???) you'll damage your car with the pure stuff? But I know how ethanol dries out rubber, which I'm quite sure is what my fuel lines are made of, but my manual says to use 85. So should I be using 87 and avoiding 85? Or...?
I just want an electric car. "Plug it in", I get.

I think you're confusing e85 with 85 octane gas
E85 is 85% ethanol, 15% gas (and e15 is the other way around)
Octane rating is a measure of how much you can compress a fuel before it ignites by itself. Higher octane gas is more resistant to that. (And e85 actually has a pretty high octane rating, usually somewhere north of 100. Regular gas often contains up to 10% ethanol, in part because it boosts the octane rating)
To expand on that a bit, if you compress gas enough, at a certain point it just catches fire on its own. This is actually a big part of how diesel engines work. Diesel is actually pretty hard to ignite, in some cases you can even put out small fires by pouring diesel on it (don't try this at home) so they rely on getting high enough compression in order to work.
Gasoline is a lot more flammable though, you don't really need to compress it at all for it to burn. Sure, ideally you probably want a certain compression ratio because something something stoichiometry but gas is more forgiving in that regard. As long as your air-fuel mixture is about right, it's gonna burn when your spark plug goes off.
In fact, gas is maybe a little too forgiving, if your octane rating is too low and your engine compression is too high (mostly a problem with higher-performance engines) that gas can just kind of go off too early before the spark plug goes off, which causes "engine knock" which will cause damage.
But the other way around, high octane in a lower compression engine, basically does nothing spectacular. It still goes boom when the spark plug goes off and not until then.
Just to clarify, the three numbers at the pump (87, 91, 93 I think?) are the octane rating which the other comments explained. The ethanol content is the sticker that says "may contain up to 10% ethanol". This post is about increasing that percentage of ethanol in regular gas, which as other comments explained mostly just makes the gas less efficient.
E85 is 85% ethanol and 15% gas, basically the reverse of regular gas.

I don't think there is a regular 85 octane lowest in Nebraska is 87 octane. E85 is the ethanol version but your vehicle has to be able to use it.
Some 87 here can have small amounts of ethanol if it says so at the pump and that can be used in normal vehicles. Older cars pre2000 don't run well with it and some with carburators can get vapor lock
I'm a car girl, its mkind of my thing. Octane ratings aretgere to protect your engine, its a rating of how readily the gasoline ignites in the engine. The larger the number the harder to self ignite. Most cars use 85, the only time the higher octane 93 is needed is for cars with turbo or supercharging, or cars with higher compression ratios.
Just put whatever its rated for in it, going with a higher octane than what your car is rated for doesn't hurt a thing, but it also won't make your engine run better or anything.
As far as ethanol goes, modern cars ate fine with 10-20% ethanol in their gas. It will get worse mileage the higher the percentage of ethanol as it is not as energy dense as gasoline. The E85 stuff has a higher percentage of ethanol (85%) than is allowed in conventional gas and was introduced to try and lower gas prices (it's actually completely ineffective and ethanol for fuel is more energy intensive than just giving us straight gasoline but they have to prop up the corn industry somehow). Regular cars can't use E85 unless they are rated for it as the engine has to add more fuel to keep a close to stoichiometric ratio of fuel to air.
TLDR: Use whatever octane your car asks for, if you put a higher octane in it doesn't hurt, but it also doesn't add any benefit.
When it comes to ethanol regular cars can tolerate up to roughly 20% with only a reduction in fuel mileage as a result. E85 is only for cars rated to use it as they need a sensor to detect ethanol percentage and adjust fuel to air ratios accordingly.
Here's my laymen's understanding:
Higher octane fuel (85 vs 87 vs 89 etc) prevents premature detonation in the engine. Detonation needs to happen at a very specific timing in each cylinder (IFF the sparkplug is sparking), but if the fuel is too "eager" to explode it could detonate early just from the heat of the engine, which eventually breaks shit. Octane makes your fuel just a little less explosive, so higher octane rating can compensate for engines more prone to premature detonation (basically most engines that run hotter, high revving, with turbos, some modded engines etc).
Running too high octane doesn't hurt or help you if you weren't detonating prematurely before. You'd just be throwing your money away running higher than recommended by the manufacturer (ok it can help clean the engine of carbon deposits similar to how a can of seafoam would, but really you'd be better off using the seafoam, and like seafoam it'd be overkill to do it all the time).
Now using too low an octane rating, it depends. In older cars, you'll just get premature detonation and it'll blow shit up, just don't do it. Most modern cars though are smart enough to adjust their timing to compensate for low octane fuel and avoid damage (check your manual to make sure though). However, you'll be getting worse performance, worse efficiency, worse emissions, basically your car will drive worse and you won't actually be saving money with your reduced milage. Unless it's an emergency and you have no choice, get the recommended.
Octane is basically irrelevant to the issue of ethanol. The relevant issue is that gasoline (ethanol-free) has a specific energy of 47.3 MJ/kg, while ethanol has a specific energy of 29.7 MJ/kg. You need 1.6 gallons of ethanol to get the same energy as a gallon of gasoline.
Okay so to quickly summarise: the octane number defines just how explosive the fuel is under compression. 100 means it's the equivalent of a 100% iso-octane mixture.
The more explosive the fuel is, the sooner it detonates as the cylinder compresses it. If it detonates too soon, at too low a compression, that's when your engine starts to knock. By adding ethanol you're increasing the pressure needed for detonation, ensuring that the ignition system ignites the fuel at the appropriate time, thus improve the engine's longevity.
Just use the octane number as required by your car.
The issue with ethanol isn't directly related to octane. It's that it can damage rubber parts in the fuel line. Particularly in cars and motorcycles that are several decades or more old. And more than ~15% ethanol would not be advisable for most modern cars as it has different properties than gasoline and your car likely would not run well on it unless you have a bifuel system.

I ask because a lot of people will tell you that the octane numbers on American gas are lower than European petrol, but actually the measurement systems are different. RON (research octane number) is a higher number than MON (motor octane number). Europe uses RON, the US uses (RON+MON)/2.
Of course octane number isn't an indication of quality either, but that's a whole different issue.
