The old Rockstar is dead. Ppl r gonna preorder GTA anyways and defend the company when they get a broken/unfinished product on day one, claiming it can be fixed in the future with updates. Look at cyberpunk 2077 and no mans land.

They're both very well received games and the two clearest examples of games actually get fixed properly after a disastrous release.

Well received by the niche audience that continued to play it. Never touched again by the majority of all the others.

I remember buying it and refunding it because of all the lies. Not even small lies. Massive lies that completely changed what the game was.

Recent reviews are good, but that's this little thing called selection bias. As evidenced by many people in these comments they gave the game a second chance and it was still crap.

There have been indie games that have released something closer to the marketing lie NMS originally attempted to market.

I never played cyberpunk, but all I've ever heard about it was how boring and unoriginal the story was.

Celebrating them fixing something that should have been delayed when the end result is still boring really explains why the game industry is where it is.

It's a good thing opinions are subjective, and individual to the person. Fwiw, my opinion differs completely. I really enjoyed it on launch, but left it after I'd built a ship, seen a few planets and completed the ten part Atlas storyline. Of course that was 100% of the features on launch. The game's features are colossal now

It's as broad as an ocean, but as deep as a puddle. I'm glad people enjoy it, but I couldn't. The planets aren't interesting, because you know there can't be anything unique anywhere with the proc gen (there are some more rare planet types, but even those aren't very interesting). This basically means the big selling point of the game, the exploration, isn't worth doing. The crafting and base building are just a grind. Flying is really boring with too many guardrails. An interesting game requires the ability to make mistakes and fail, in my opinion, and they're scared to let that happen.

Sadly true. I jump in every few years. Make a new character, do the run, do the new stuff, do the current season. It’s all still the same just with more.

CP2077 on the other hand did it. I never had an issue at launch like the loud groups did. But I appreciate the work, the qol updates, and the expansion. They did turn that game around … but again, I didn’t see the initial problems anyways …

For Cyberpunk, I’m a pc player through and through. But I had friends with better hardware that encountered a lot of issues too. I guess I just got lucky. And I’m happy I did tbh. The game world (cyberpunk genre inclusive) means so much to me.

Its serviceable. A lot of it is shallow, finding new creatures, new planets often makes you see the same thing youve already seen with the details changed a bit. But some places genuinely felt special - Ive seen a worm the size of my frigate once, and only once. That's the kind of weird shit I want in every exploration game. The story I expected to be an afterthought, but damn, its straight up pretty decent. Can't speak for any of the people who supported the kickstarter, it really sucked for them and they have a right to not be satisfied, but I absolutely got a very enjoyable experience out of it. There are better games that I enjoyed much much less

No Man's Sky is pretty great now. But that doesn't mean it's something everyone will enjoy.

I don't particularly enjoy it myself, but that's because open world survival and crafting is something I realized I like in theory, but don't actually enjoy playing.

Sorry, but you're out of your mind. No Man's Sky is incredible now. It's not just a matter of being better. It's a matter of the game wasn't anything cost to what they promised and now it's gone far beyond that. The player numbers don't lie, either.

I mean, it’s what they promised, and some more now. That’s just not a game for everyone. It’s a little bit of everything with none of it being well fleshed out because I don’t think they know how to do any one thing specifically well at all. But like, if you’re into that type of game it’s fine? If you’re not, well then of course you’re not gonna like it not every game is for everyone.

I got NMS day one for exactly what it was- just exploring an endless universe, and I loved it for that reason. I understand why all the hate for it, but there are people who genuinely liked it for being a relaxing "do nothing" exploration game. Sure, Hello Games finally fulfilled their promises like adding true multiplayer and missions/expeditions, and that's given me a reason to pick it back up every so often and link up with a friend or two. Even VR was another reason for me to play it for a while again.

Games can definitely be fixed post launch. Fallout New Vegas was a broken mess, but now it's the most beloved 3D Fallout game and people don't even bring it up in this conversation. With enough ambition, quality, and room to improve underneath the technical issues, games can and have been brought back from from being beta releases.

On the other hand, Rockstar's schemes aren't guaranteed to pay off. RDR2 had a well received single player, but the online mode was an absolute failure compared to GTA Online. Given how people have less disposable income and advanced gaming hardware, GTA 6 might be too much too late. I doubt it'll be a flop, but I also doubt it'll have the success of GTA 5.

I also don't see it having the same relevance in a post culture war era. Even if it plays things relatively safe, it will still be seen as too woke by the right, and too capitalist coded by the left. The liberal center isn't an all encompassing hegemon like it once was, and that's really who the game is made for.

Streamers are best friends with AAA devs. Streamers encourage this crap and play innocent/hostile when called out for it. Gamers are willing participants because they'll give them views on YT or bits on Twitch as a reward for supporting the very industry both parties bitch about.

What you can look forward to is every single content creator even remotely related to digital entertainment talking about how its the best/worst thing ever, dissecting every single plotpoint, getting enraged/excited over every minor update, endless discussions over the price of the mtx that will generate more revenue than a mid-sized countries GDP.

Even if the game sucks by every objective metric, children and casuals will still throw money at it every chance it gets. The game has to be amazing for me to have any hope.

What I do NOT understand is whenever people resort to propaganda like this, to try sabotage public perception of an (actually evil) person or company. Yes we know Rockstar is a bunch of greedy bastards, but their games are "nothing groundbreaking", really? GTA V and Red Dead are listed as two of the most successful games ever made behind only Minecraft.

This is like when an actor gets involved in some sex scandal and everyone suddenly thinks their work is mediocre. Can we really not separate an evil person or company from their work?

Yeah red dead was amazing. But they're making a different game to that at the moment. GTA is usually (in comparison) a bit light on the stories/immersion in favour of goofy stuff and explosions.

Also i don't know about specific evil stuff from rockstar. I just thought they were the usual kind of corpo jerks (union busting etc). Not sure where that particular protest you made is aimed.

Also "successful" is not really about the players. It's great if you're a shareholder though. They do love whoever invented the shark cards.

The online mode might flop, since part of the success of 5's online mode was that it was so generous and buggy at the start that the initial waves of online players became trillionaires in-game. This allowed subsequent waves to be preyed upon by Rockstar but also boosted by the old timers.

Other than the lack of Free Mode activities, GTA Online was a ton of fun on consoles in the early days (it peaked around the time Sumo came out IMO), but I'm willing to bet it will flop immediately in GTA 6, given how much more monetized it's going to be this time around. I mean it flopped almost instantly on PC with half the monetization, and I don't have a console now, so I have to wait for it to come to PC and hope for the best.

The only possible saving grace is the fact that the FiveM devs are involved. But I'm not going to hold my breath. They'll probably monetize those servers too.

(Also I still prefer GTA IV's multiplayer to both GTA Online and FiveM. Cops and Crooks and that game's version of GTA Race were some of the most fun I've ever had in a video game! V nerfed GTA Race so much that they sucked all the fun out of it.)

There is this YouTuber that is like crazy for the game, always talking about it, saying that's going to be the best game of the world, that nothing could go bad, that Rockstar is like some kind of elves making ancient jewelry. I just want to see his completely breakdown if the game is shit.

All most of the people who made GTA 5 are long gone. The game isn't going to be edgy nor will it be pushing the envelope the way all their other games did. Its going to be safe and filled with inclusive dad jokes that suck the air out of the room... with character banter heavily inspired by wannabe MCU dialogue (which is also shit BTW but they emulate it because they want to be as successful as Marvel)

E: I was being hyperbolic to make a point...

Dan Houser: the bigger loss by most accounts. Co-founder and lead writer on essentially every GTA since the series' 1997 debut through GTA V, plus Red Dead Redemption 2, Bully, and Max Payne 3. He left in 2020, and has confirmed directly that he wrote none of GTA 6 "They're always a new story. It's not going to be a story I wrote or a character set that I developed." He's since said the sheer scale of GTA V and RDR2's workload (450,000 lines of dialogue for RDR2 alone) burned him out before GTA 6 could even get going. He's now running his own studio, Absurd Ventures.

Leslie Benzies: arguably even more central to the actual production side. He was producer on every GTA from GTA III onward and ran Rockstar North as president, credited by some as one of "the three people most directly responsible for the massive success of the Grand Theft Auto series," alongside the Houser brothers. He left in 2016 amid a lawsuit over allegedly unpaid royalties, worth $150 million US, and disputes over who was ultimately responsible for the company's success. He's since founded Build A Rocket Boy (whose own game, MindsEye, launched poorly this year).

They still have Sam houser and their art director, and there are still veteran developers they aren't all gone... I just think most of the mojo is gone from the company that has a game wide impact on its direction.

Rockstar has historically been very good about making relatable characters with good dialogue in gripping stories. They took 5 years to make rdr 2, which turned out to be good and now another 8 years for gta 6.

It's definitely not a given that the game is gonna be good, but it might very well be a banger. Writing it off already is unfair, I think.

But still, don't fucking preorder games

Historically all the people I'm talking about made those games and are now gone, which is my point. I unfortunately don't have high hopes for their next game if their recent writing in GTA5 is any indication...

Even if its decent at release, its bound to be filled with bugs that wont be fixed properly because they layed off so many devs. Its gonna be a maintenance nightmare.

The map is the biggest disappointment. Just like in GTA V, there's next to no reason to visit the upper ⅔rds of the map. I was expecting at least a proper panhandle with some typical southern towns scattered about, not just a 1.5x scaled up version of what we've already been stuck playing for the past 13 years.

Edit: No Orlando, either. I was really excited to see Rockstar's take on Disney World... They were probably afraid of getting sued. :(

Sheeesh ya all are downers league. I mean, I agree with OP's meme it would be hella funny but over all, ya all sound like cranky old people xD

GTA is what it is. Either you like it or not. I loved how GTA V openly jested at the, back then recent, climate and the game itself was also enjoyable, if a bit grindey money-wise. But all in all, formula works and if they keep it up, the game will be at the very least good.

GTA 4 was something of a 'flop'. The cars were very hard to steer at high speeds. That's pretty much the worst case scenario. A car driving game where the cars aren't fun to drive. The only way they could screw it up worse than that is if was full of micro transactions.

Yeah I'd forgotten about what a dud GTA 4 was. Not just the driving, the faux-HDR or whatever you call it really did not work on my TV so it kept alternating between too dark to see anything and everything washed out white. Basically made it unplayable. I'm sure it looked amazing on the developers' high spec LCD monitors, but it was ass on my CRT.

On PC at least it was probably because of the requirements. It was pretty rough on PCs. Works better using Proton than it did with Windows Vista or 7, though you can compile dxvk or whatever for Windows too to make it better now. On consoles, you needed a 2 year old console rather than a 4 year old one so I suspect fewer people had them this early into the generation. Later on, you'd get GTA V on the same generation.

Are gangsters and street thugs still cool? Like, I'm a millenial. White kids in my suburban elementary school were flashing the "blood" sign on the playground to be cool and edgy.

Is that still the case with today's edgy 12 year olds? Is it still a power fantasy to steal a car and shoot a hooker and sell drugs?

Like genuinely, stuff like Elder Scrolls works because it's still a culturally common fantasy to be slinging magical spells or swinging a sword in a medieval-coded "high fantasy" world. Being a badass space marine is still a culturally common fantasy, being an OP anime shonen protag is, being a Mad Max postapocalypse raider is, etc. Is "Miami gangster" still mythologized like that?

There's a huge problem with lambasting the downfall of America during the downfall of America.

I'm betting development went something like 2014-2017 lambasting woke, 2018-2021 make fun of Trumpism and woke, 2022 mock fascism (on both sides), 2023-2024 lambaster Trumpism, 2025-2026 parody both sides.... And I'm betting it will STILL release undercooked and come out as confused, probably with some really off putting parts that stop people playing.

"I play all the way up to the Trans part, because in hindsight I'm sorry America went through that."

I think they might even end up shifting the tone after the release and it will probably still be the last GTA in the franchise... Then again, maybe it will just fail because of all the micro transactions and Fortnite BS they put in.

P.S Rockstar accused of Union Busting after firing dozens of staff.

It will be. The fans of gtaiv and gtav were children when those games came out. Their brains and personalities were in utero basically.

Grown ass men in their 40s will play gtavi and see how silly and profoundly lame the GTAverse is.

Genz and gen a will be nothing except offended by everything in the game. I have no doubt they're (rockstar) going to pander to the trans community to save a little face.

I'm certain the game will flop, especially because all their design time was proooobbbabbly, building the entire micro economy and microtransaction store that's going to be the centerpiece of the franchise going forward.

Pbbbbbbhhht. Stinker incoming.

they’re (rockstar) going to pander to the trans community to save a little face.

All trailers so far have shown nothing but swaggering toxic male bravado, and an "equal" (but let's be honest, she's second fiddle) female partner who is far from androgenous.

I think GenZ will hate the lack of inclusivity, as I think Rockstar is targeting conservatives as their main audience

The fans of gtaiv and gtav were children when those games came out. Their brains and personalities were in utero basically.

Based on what exactly? Because these games where played by a diverse range of players - of course, this included children below 12, but there where also teenagers and adults. Its insulting how you're making such an over generalisation - essentially calling everyone "children".
