Everyone knows a cornerstone principle of the Fediverse was that there should be secret ban lists baked into the website's frontend that aligns to a single maintainer's ideology.

I read this earlier, some notes:

They're upset that people they thought would agree with this course of action "turned on them." There's clearly zero self reflection or consideration that maybe, just maybe, their actions were out of line and the community response was deserved (minus death threats, but I also don't really know if I believe that's true, because this person is obviously a lying, gaslighting asshat).

Everyone else, though, enjoy your toxic, xenophobic, knee-jerk-to-violence, purity-testing, and harassing-anyone-who-doesn’t-fall-in-line cess pit. One day you, too, will do or say something that doesn’t toe the line and you’ll be right where I am.

This idiot is whining about a self-inflicted wound, literally nobody gave a shit about what they said it's what they did.

Also note that they keep digging deeper into "I have to have the last word so I have to remove any and all ways for people to reply to me. I won, I know I did. They're just all out to get me." Just really pathetic conspiratorial thinking to justify the fact that they did something fucking idiotic and people took them to task for it.

Not one person would give a shit if they bitched about it on Lemmy, but "taking matters into their own hands" (as in the original post said "somebody had to!" because they had to don't you see? what a fucking lummox.) and not being open in an OPEN SOURCE COMMUNITY.

EDIT: To really show the God Complex off they really should have ended with God's Final Message to His Creation:

Sorry for the inconvenience.

EDIT II: Holy shit guys, the've actively built a way to DDOS dbzer0 into the dubvee page. How can anyone take this fucking walking pile of shit seriously? They have a raging hate boner and they're just lazily jerking it.

The votes represent, in some sense, a social consensus, and consensus actually does matter quite a lot to people.

If you ever see people arguing about which movie is objectively better than some other, that's what they're doing. They're fighting for social capital.

Taking things into one hands while trying to steer many communities with a heavy fist (blacklisting without admin’s knowledge) seems like very sociopathic behaviour. Hopefully he’s just a kid and will grow out of the childish behaviour what appears to boil down that we need him and he doesn’t need us? I don’t think he deserves death threats but AdmiralPatrivcks behaviour demonstrates reason #3221 why we need decentralization like the fediverse.

There are sociopathic individuals littered throughout society and corpos act socio if not more psychopathic while chasing the almighty dollar. When things happen in the corporate socials, they are driven by a topdown without the users even knowing what’s happening. This event has shown me that Lemmy can and will find those individuals that try to game the system can and will be held accountable. This is good news if you value autonomy and critical thoughts.

Im inclined to believe that there were death-threats. I dont agree with what this person did here, but it should be considered that there is a certain segment of the population that has sufficiently poor consideration for others or emotional regulation that they will send death threats to people that make them angry, and, importantly, while this segment may be more or less common in some groups, that tendency in itself does not force a person to hold or not hold a given view (even ideologies or ethical systems that condemn death threats, because plenty of people out there are hypocritical). As such, these people can be expected to exist in any sufficiently large group, to include whatever groups you, I, or anyone else consider to be an "in-group". The tesseract dev got a lot of people mad, so, it would honestly surprise me if they didnt get a few such threats just given the sheer number of chances for one of the angry people to be of the sort to send them. If anything, Id expect a shittier person to be slightly more likely to get them just because people like that tend to do more things that make people mad at them, though this should not be taken as saying that people that get death threats are necessarily shitty people or that they're deserved.

That stuff aside, Ive had mixed feelings about this whole affair. I do agree that the hidden blacklist thing was way out of line, but I find that most of the criticism Ive seen doesnt really give the right reason (in my point of view) for why it was out of line. (Namely, Ive seen a lot of it framed as "this is censorship, its wrong to make software that intentionally does not display posts from specific people/places". I dont think I really like this argument, because I think a lot of the people making it havent really considered the implications of it thoroughly. Its generally considered acceptable for users to block other users for example, for moderators to ban users from a community, and for instances to defederate from other instances if they feel the need, and these things also prevent one seeing the posts of affected users, they just happen at a different layer than tesseract did. It is censorship, yes, but one cant expect to be entitled to the attention of others, theres simply too many people that have things to say, even important things, for it to be otherwise, nobody can possibly pay attention to everyone, nor is it healthy to try, so there must be systems in place that allow one to ignore those one doesnt want to see in favor of those one does.

The problem in my view is one of consent: if tesseract had made it known upfront that using it without disabling some default setting also opted the user into its developer's personal blocklist, then, well, it wouldnt be much different than when people on microblog platforms share blocklists with others, or when people choose an instance based on that instance's federation decisions. I would not personally have wanted to use it, as I have different ideas of what I want to block and not block, but I dont think that in theory it would have been unethical for it to exist in that state. However, while the dev themself seems to have thought that they had done enough to make this feature known, based on one of their responses to the controversy at least, they clearly did not, else the public response to the list's exposure would not have been outrage so much as "well yeah, thats what that program does, dont use it".

Part of this I think is that while moderation decisions are expected of an instance, they dont tend to be expected from alternate UI software, so, what would have qualified as "making it known upfront" would necessarily have to have been been very blatant. As it was, they certainly didnt meet that bar, and it was very plausible for a new user to find tesseract and end up using this guy's list without knowing about it. This isnt something Ive seen come up in the angry response nearly as often as just "he's blacklisted people that I dont think ought to have been, doesnt he know blocking people is bad, what an authoritarian!". Though of course, I havent seen every post about this whole deal so its possible that I simply have missed that criticism and just seen the angry memes.)

While Ill agree that self-reflection in their part would have been the most desirable outcome, I dont think it was ever really a realistic one. I doubt that any but a small fraction of the population would really be capable of anything but defensiveness when they have managed to anger thousands of strangers into yelling at them, its not a situation that humans are really well adapted for or handle well, given that the conditions we arose in would not have allowed for it nearly as easily as those of today do. As such, I think that just leaving in frustration, while not a satisfying resolution or a perfect one, is probably the best ending that could reasonably hoped for here. The other likely outcome would have been doubling down further and keeping the anger going, and by leaving there's at least a chance that they might reflect on what happened once emotions have a chance to die down.

Its harder to explicitly say, but it also covers a wide swath of the people who were explicitly pointing out the relationship between Bidens ongoing failure to stop the genocide in Palestine and it's relationship with their failing electorally. This was a major and decisive theme in the period of 2024-2025. Both Admiral Patrick and major admins and mods fell on one side, the wrong side, of this issue with regards to using the platform to further their implicit agenda.

That still doesn’t excuse the DDOS.

And given how well he hid it, it’s obvious that he never intended that anyone see that list but him. That’s most of the ‘how dare he block so-and-so’ that I’ve seen; people mocking him for blocking them, yes, but they almost always tied it back to the fact that he was censoring the feeds of others without any kind of notification or opt-out for his users.

Saying ‘here’s my blocklist; if you don’t like it, you can toggle it off, or find another frontend’ is curating, and that’s okay. But deciding what others get to see because ‘you know best’ and hiding that list of people and instances you blocked so no-one can find out what they’re not being allowed to see is censorship, and it’s not okay.

That’s fair.

But I also don’t think they did anything whatsoever to ‘let people know’ about the blocklist like they claimed. In fact, it seems to me from how much they tried to hide it that they never intended to share that they had one, at all.

As far as the death threats… meh, who knows? From all their comments, and their attempting to defend themselves in the third person using alt accounts, they seem to be quite a drama queen with only a loose connection to reality. They interpreted lots of rather rational comments back in the beginning of all this saying ‘dude, you can’t just force people to use your blocklist’ as vicious attacks against their person and character, so I can see them interpreting more aggressive ‘how dare you tell me what to do’ comments as actual threats against their person.

On the other hand, negative self-centered people tend to attract negative, self-centered people, and I can imagine that some of those might take… poorly to finding out they’d ended up on his blocklist for disagreeing with him. Especially if they had thought they were on the same side.

if i understood his long, rambly posts about it, he might have wanted to save the fediverse, but he didn't do it for us.

he did it for the "normies" who would otherwise be filtered out by "malcontents" and toxic content; for those used to (relatively) comfier social media platforms.

i think fundamentally, though, it's better for fewer newbies to engage with the fediverse (and for some to turn back) than to have the masses use this place the same as any other social media, with a curated feed where nothing too wrong or uncomfortable ever pops up. i don't think we really want that audience, anyway.

i wonder if things would be different if he started with that attitude.

I've been alive for more than a half of an average lifespan already, and working over 20 years I've met guys and gals who have not had the ability to read or predict social cues nor understand how some acts will look like for outsiders.

My own kid is on the spectrum with a diagnosis so I've read and studied quite a bit on the matter. This might sound harsh, but in the long run I think telling the truth will help the guy. I guess the dev in question here is either young or on the spectrum. Both are alright and we all make mistakes.

Censorship because people dont fall in line with your expectations or beliefs is not right. You will learn that along the way. I was more black and white, right or wrong 20 years ago. Getting married, travelling the world, having kids will even out straight edges. You will find grey between the black and white.

Just walk away if the internet feels too burdensome. Open source is absolutely great, but dont forget that people on the internet are clever, and sometimes even more clever than you, or me for that matter.

Kind of funny to be on the exclusive list. If you dont feel right apologising, thats alright. And even if you dont want it or need it, I still forgive you for trying to censor me.

Just remember though, shitposting is forever.

Claims fediverse is rife with DARVO then proceeds to...

  • Deny any wrongdoing
  • Attack a Lemmy instance with DDOS
  • Reverse the victim and offender role by claiming they were just trying to 'save the fediverse'

Every accusation really is a confession with these chucklefucks ain't it.

If he was upfront with adding a block list, like a little message that pops up, and giving the user the option to opt out, then this would've been a non-issue. I can see some people wanting a curated block list to not have politic, rage subs, etc., but doing it in a hidden way will always leave a bad taste in my mouth.

TrickDacy 44 points 3 months ago

Yeah that's my take on it. It was a very weird thing to do on many levels. Especially doing it with the secret API call. The guy didn't understand the fediverse and wanted to mold it arbitrarily. Even if he had gone about it non-secretly it was very doomed to failure for a lot of reasons, but doing it secretly was making sure it would fail even harder. The whole idea of this platform is that you can block any number of instances/people/communities but trying to secretly do that on other people's behalf was never going to end well.

Having said all that, there is quite a bit of toxicity here that goes unchecked. But his idiotic way of dealing with it was never the right move.

Instances choosing to implement their own blocks for their instance is different than a front end developer sneaking a block list in an obscure way that impacts multiple instances.

No it's not. If I have an instance that blocks any mention of lgbtq+, or trump, or biden, or whatever, that wouldn't be cool at all. It would be fine if they told you up front, but not if it's a secret.

Everybody can create a frontend that filters out certain words or users on purpose, for the goal to have a “nicer” experience.

But why hide it? Why even go that far to load it at runtime, so that it is not visible in the source code? And why hiding a DDOS script, targeting one instance, while saying they are the “normal one”?

What a psychopath. And they will be back soon enough unfortunately.

As a former administrator of a top 100 sub, I've seen the absolute unhinged mod power tripping. My a large margin, mods were at least an equal threat to a community as the bad actors in the community.

For this reason, I've been a major proponent of a model where groups of users can generate and curate thier OWN collaboratively maintained ban lists, and users can with full visibility OPT IN to different filters.

As well, I think being able to "opt in" to users to see mod removed comments, or "opt out" of a mods comment removals would be cool. I think removed comments remain in the modlog and could be re-injected into what users see given appropriate "opt in" configuration.

Having a decentralized mechanism to manage and opt in to such lists would provide a way to combat power tripping at a grassroots level, as well as allowing broad filtering to let people choose thier experience.

This is all entirely predicated on it being:

A) with full auditable transparency

B) a clear opt-in mechanic

Hard disagreements between curators can easily be handled by forking the lists.

Long story short, I really like the idea of managed content suppression (and ideally un-supression) lists curated by regular users available in an opt-in manner because they act as a counterbalance mechanic to the outsized power that mods hold an INEVITABLY abuse.

But it's so fucking far from ethical to try and just sneak one in. I genuinely can not understand how much contempt for the agency of other human beings one must have to be able to rationalize such a thing.

That's actually really sad. Not because I agree with him, but because it's always sad to see this sort of falling down. Like imagine, a parallel timeline where this person's parents hadn't abused them, and they hadn't had been bullied or whatever, or had faced repercussions for poor behavior, or had gotten the help they needed years ago. Right? Like if something hadn't gone wrong, they wouldn't have ended up like this.

Knowing that all the magas, Nazis, real tankies (the ones that REALLY want to just slaughter anybody that disagrees, iron fist style), all the bullies and buttholes out there, and all the other messed up of us, who fall down into evil or extreme burnout... Knowing this happens at all, is still sad, to me.

I'm American and think you know who needs to be you know what'ed. But even then, knowing that he grew up in such a disgusting environment, ruining him, not ever really allowing his upper brain functions to fully come to, and the past-but-then-future path for him that was inevitable of bad behavior and responses from society that would drive him to be exactly like this..... Knowing that shit happens to humans, in our species, theoretically within our control, is sad. And seeing obvious predictions and fears come to pass in real-time is never fun.

With the admiral patrick guy, it's pathetic and gross and shitty and honestly good riddance, but still the human part of me is like, that confusion and frustration he's obviously avoiding and coping with ego and trying to fill the sadness with "you are all sociopaths harassing me and at least I tried to stand my ground"... Like he obviously doesn't quite understand, and honestly, truly, neither do we. He stood up for his shitty moderate centrist beliefs for some real goal, behaved like an outcast petulant child, and handled it relatively poorly. But like, I see this shit all the time from all SORTS of people, in all sorts of capacities, public or not.

I won't miss him. I don't use an html lemmy interface. I luckily don't have to run an instance (thank you, Ada). But it would be inhuman of me to absolutely, irresponsibly condemn this dude to shitty-hell for trying to do something that his twisted mind probably thought was right. Will he change? Probably not. Will he get worse? Probably. Will he directly hurt somebody? I hope not. Will he likely fall in with a worse crowd? Happens ALL the time.

So I beg of everybody here, to stop, and consider what went wrong for this guy. Put yourself in his shoes, I know that's too big an ask for most people - but that's kind of my point, and the problem here. He fucked up, he based it on fucking up, and somewhat kept fucking up even after he left (a ddos script? Really?). But pain only begets more pain. Really try to figure out what went wrong, what the points in time were where he REALLY could have been recovered by any of us or somebody in real life. You aren't going to get the right answer. A lot of us are going to get the wrong answer. But just try to incorporate empathy into your life going forwards, because there's a lot of bullshit and horror and hate and pain happening in the world today, and we are all trying to do what we think is best and most efficient to do the right thing. And we need to, at least, learn from this event and be better.

I agree that with you that in theory its good to consider the broader context that leads to such behaviors. We should strive for a society that doesn't traumatize children in all the ways the current one does. I certainly don't think people are just created that way, but a lot of people end up with a certain cluster of behavioral patterns. What seems like unhinged behavior seems to be a lot of island of stability so-to-speak that a lot of people unfortunately land on.

But that doesn't mean that you should either ignore or tolerate people making the world worse or getting in the way of people who want it to be better. I have a lot of empathy for Musk, for example. Yet I'd still celebrate if he took a one-way trip to Titanic.

We used the word "retard" to mean slow for a long long time. But when it became a psychological diagnosis, the colloquial usage shot way up. Maybe some of the people calling others "r*tards" were speaking French, but I think the majority were inspired by hatred. So, the people who care about these things did two things: we changed the name of the diagnosis, and we stopped using the word. People don't use that word nearly as much anymore.

I think a similar thing is going on with that word you used. "N*rcissist". It had a somewhat valid use in the 1800s for a while, but it pretty quickly became about a psychiatric disorder. In the modern day, the majority using the word are inspired by hate. I don't think most people using it are hateful, but I think they got the idea from hateful people. NPD is really stigmatised, and I think the people who care about these things should do two things: we should change the name of the diagnosis, and we should stop using the word.

He has an inability to take responsibility for his decisions when caught trying to control others, so he talks down to everyone else.

His remark about disassociating, is a major characteristic of all dissociative phenomena involving a detachment from reality, which we are seeing above. He’s hinting that he’s still subconsciously aware of his mistake and is simply furious that he slipped up. I wouldn’t be surprised if he eventually decides to return.

Oh... dear dear dear.

Nobody ... directed harrasment against this whiney and censorious adult pissbaby.

It was spontaneous.

db0 themself could have specifically messaged me, telling me something like 'please remain civil in this trying time' and i would have replied 'lol' and trolled this fucking idiot on his own boards, that he remembered to only secretly shadowban me from, but not actually ban me from... anyway.

... is Admiral Patrick Star familiar with the phrase 'become ungovernable'?

Your idiot rules have no power over me, in this place.

I obey only rules I find reasonable.

... Also, how is a total retreat and defeat... not... giving us all the personal satisfaction of having won?

That... makes 0 sense.

He also admits this has taken away considerable attention from his IRL responsibilities.

Actual flawless victory, lemmy, truly: bravo.

Did....does he realize that he could have just made his own instance, and just not federated with the instances he doesn't like?

I... how... did he read the documentation... on lemmy? Does he know how lemmy works?

I will never comprehend the sheer arrogance.

Just incredible.

It's too bad that this had to be a big drama, but:

No one is talking about the Piefed vote quotas anymore, so you're welcome.

More than once I brought this up as comparison on the difference between an unpopular default based on the main developer's needs, that was announced and detailed in changelogs, that can be toggled and worked around, instead of a control-freak's grudges manifesting as a hidden shadowban list. We lost a very friendly power user (PugJesus) from the Piefed change, but unfortunately sometimes that is the price of it.

Wanting a less-toxic fediverse is a totally normal thing, users and admins have many of the tools already for that, and I respect devs for trying to do their part. But it is the dishonest way of implementing it that no one is a fan of, and that makes everyone question this dev's character. If this person could at the very least own up to it, call it well-intentioned error, and respond to the problem with solutions rather than a crashout, then this wouldn't need to be as big of a deal.

harassing-anyone-who-doesn't-fall-in-line

Lemmy is bandwagony but in politics you have to live with a little bit of it. I've said anti- and pro-feminist stuff, made anti- and pro-trans arguments while trying to be empathetic as I can, made cold, warm and hot takes, toed the line and went against the grain, got lots of up and down votes. I try to pushback against gatekeeping and purity tests, play devil's advocate, and when I'm not shitposting, try to steelman arguments I don't agree with. People are imperfect, I try to avoid to assign guilt by association, people will think differently about things than I do, I respect their opinions while still disagree with, and I'll take downvotes on the chin for defending different that.

Well, you are involved.

Admiral Patrick, dev of tesseract and admin of Startrek.website, made a shadowban list and slipped it into his front end. Instead of using modding tools like an adult, he decided to block people and communities through his app, which he was distributing and sharing with users and other instances (it's a front end you can add for your instance website). The list was hidden and only loaded from his website at the start, it caused a bug for db0 and they traced it back.

The list was of course at his sole discretion and involves personal vendettas, leftist comms, LGBTQ comms, small news comms and a mixed bag of random ones.

The list also includes you. So a bunch of users weren't seeing any of your posts or comments show up, and were never informed or given a choice about it.

This is the crux of the problem. So many people are on the list and didn't know, or didn't know what the list does, didn't know what was being hidden or that they were being hidden. Dev of a Lemmy frontend made a block list, as well as a triple super secret download at runtime (base64 encoded then decoded at run).

db0, admin of dbzer0, noticed the original block list and forked as well as posted about what was found. Others found the super secret download.

ptz (aka... A whole bunch of alts, someone else can list) got mad about people finding out then claimed it was a harassment campaign because... db0 found the dirty list.

Followed by a whole bunch of posts and then this "final" crashout.

Over the course of the last several days, I have received a constant stream of harassing messages, death threats, and threats of doxxing

If you actually got death threats and threats of doxxing, that truly sucks and shame on people who took this that seriously.

Even people around here I'd interacted with positively for years and had grown to respect because they seemed level headed and above the immature and sociopathic bullshit that dominates this platform showed their true selves.

Or maybe you were just wrong, dude.

Like you developed a frontend. If you just blocked people from your instance we wouldn't have batted an eye. Your job as a frontend developer was to choose how information was packaged. You should not have been deciding for users who they would or would not be allowed to see. And if you really felt strongly about the need for a blacklist, you should have made your filters opt-in.

Then you have entire instances whose admins call for the death of others, harass other users

Yeah it's crazy how liberals call for the deaths of billions around the world by supporting the status quo, which kills countless people and is currently dooming almost all life on Earth to climate disaster. That's why I'm on Anarchist Nexus, whose admins and users (me lol) have called for the killing to stop by any means necessary. (Pretty sure Admiral Patrick is referring to us specifically as the instance-that-will-not-be-named.)

I know that liberalism is the monoculture in the West, but you must eventually learn that (1) liberalism is not the default mode of existence, and (2) liberalism is violence. Liberal democracy is violence. It's probably the most violent system currently in existence. And I don't know how to make that an easy lesson for you to learn, I understand that it's a challenge...but if you're unwilling to do the work to undo your liberalism, the rest of the world does not have the time to wait for you.

One day you, too, will do or say something that doesn't toe the line and you'll be right where I am.

Good, if I ever become as libbed up as you then I deserve to get banned.

You crazies won and proved me wrong. The fediverse isn't worth saving after all.

Bye

Hell yeah we're fucking crazy, and I wouldn't want it any other way ancom-heart

Which countries aren't 'liberal' or some degree of brutal authoritarian dictatorship?

PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S 5 points 3 months ago

By "liberalism is not the default mode of existence," I meant to reject liberalism's tendency to label its constructions as "natural", "inevitable", or "universal". E.g., private property is not natural (even territorial animals cannot establish property lines like we do), not inevitable, and not universal (because it is a specifically Western liberal concept). Capitalism is not natural (c.f. Kropotkin's Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution), inevitable, or universal (e.g. various hunter-gatherer societies).

I am absolutely not denying liberalism's ubiquity in modern times. Quite the opposite: liberalism is ubiquitous in Western society and societies that interface with Westerners, hence why I am so eager to combat it!

But I don't believe that these "death threats" are a serious problem, seriously connected to db0. I think this death threat thing is made up. It's awful convenient how if you're being boycotted or ridiculed for your beliefs and values, you can just make a post about some death threats and get sympathy. And it ain't DARVO when you got no history of abusing the other person before calling out their politics.

Earned the instance a ban from my client. Some people are not worth saving indeed. I still think the admiral was on to something, he just didn't choose the right way to do it.

Lemmy has always had an extremism problem and we need to sort out instances that advocate for violence by tolerating it.

There definitely needed to be some self reflection here, both from the guy that though putting a DDoS into the software was in any way a good way to prove you stood on the moral high ground and from the communities that thought death threats were the appropriate response to this situation.

death threats and doxxing really go against the spirit of open source software, which is people are allowed to code what they want, they post the code, and we can all see it. someone also could have easily forked this if they were that unhappy.
