I broke so many cameras this way...
Skate videos popularized the use of the fish eye lens. Music videos had people waving their hands around in the face of the camera because it looks cool through that lens. The idea was applied to still images, and this is the result.
I jumped in slow motion / off the curb.
Without a skateboard / that should look absurd!
But with my fisheye lens / hey, haven't ya heard?
I got the moves so smooth / to make ya mom say:
Could make home movies with one of those

Hype Williams directed the music videos in the 90s-2000s with lots of contrast, bright colors, bright lights, and the fisheye lens.
If you look up some Busta Rhymes music videos you will see plenty of examples.

It's weird but, without the sound track these gifs just look like a bunch of posers trying to look cool.
Everybody is just trying to look cool. Everybody probably looks like a "poser" to someone else. And in a cruel twist of irony, the inventors and early adopters of some "cool" new thing, look derivative and boring years AFTER everyone else has done it. Kids don't have a long memory for these kinds of things; they grew up in a world where it was already old news and boring, never having experienced a world without it. This shift in perception can happen sometimes even among people old enough to have been there at the beginning. So yeah, they are just a bunch of posers trying to look cool, but aren't we all?
yeah but at least it wasn't tilt-shift photography.
that shit was old when it started. god i hated that trend
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but with the music it also looks that way to someone over twenty years old or so.
It was a remarkably stupid time, however even back then there were better music videos. E.g. stuff by Michel Gondry, Run Wrake, or Spike Jonze.
It's all in the (fish)eye of the beholder.
Late 90s in a nutshell, to be honest.
Why not take the still with a fisheye?
I think this is the biggest reason. But who am I? I know nothing.
No. I typed it with my own thumbs, from my own mind.
There's also this kind of thing.

(I found a surprising number of unfamiliar kinds of input devices when searching for ‘thumb keyboard’ just now — some of which I wouldn't mind trying like ten years ago.)
I happen to have watched a pretty good film in which boobs were described as 'very friendly and unpretentious'. Said boobs weren't shown.
Look, it's the same every time a new gadget comes out and takes the world by storm only for it to become boring after a few years. If you weren't around in the late nineties it's hard to explain just how exciting fingers were.
We had to do our finging manually before that. It was hell.

This seems relevant: Go hang a salami, I'm a lasagna hog.
Coincidentally, women are pretty bad at straponning, because they lack the part of the dick that's inside the gooch and thus provides support in the action.
Yeah they digital now
We also all suddenly had phones in our pockets and those phones had cameras in them.
In the 90's and 00's there was a photographic movement to take photographs with more depth using more hand and arm movement to make more dynamic images. Some say it came from comic book artists and others say it started as everyone doing the double thumb and index finger as a ergatz frame gide of what you were about to film, but this time you were the subject.
Anyways it got popular so people with cheap cameras and phone cameras started propping them up and trying to do some of it and most of the time they didn't have enough time to get their hands right. So they started to take all these pictures of themselves with weird hands and people started doing it on purpose, and then photographers picked up on the trend.
In the late mid to late 90's they had cameras and video cameras on what we would now refer to as 'Dumbphones'. I was born between the Summer of Love and the original Woodstock. Those were my 20's and 30's. They had cameras. Not great cameras. Not all of them but enough of them. BTW I worked in IT and studied WAP and online multimedia formats as part of my training.
And something else you are forgetting is the trend was on blog like sites before blogging was a thing. People didn't expect high quality images because they took forever to download. Often people also used crappy pocket cams and videos from cheap video cameras. But most people think phones when you say selfies these days, but they often used digital snapshot cameras and then imported them to the PC and shunk them down to Internet size. However AIUI the movement were based on camera focused dumbphones.
You don't want to believe it fine. No skin off my nose.
Yeah I absolutely know phone cameras actually existed, but also that no one at all posted phone camera pics online because the resolution was so poor. I was in my late teens and 20s during this time. Everyone had digital cameras and transferred pics to their computers to upload.
I think 2003 is when they started taking off.
Sure they existed around then, but go back and look at the photo quality. Phone cameras were a novelty in 2003, and anyone wanting to actually take a picture was still using a dedicated camera. No one was taking pictures like the ones we're talking about here on their Nokia

Nu-Metal Pose, meant to be a way of "connecting with the audience"
Wait is it a numetal thing? That would explain me
So there is precisely one photograph of me on the internet and you just helped me prove to my wife that it's actually me because I'm doing that pose. WHO ELSE WOULD BE THAT RIDICULOUS.
Yesssss I've been trying to win this argument since like May now I get to pick brunch today
Congrats on the win! Pick something good.
it was the place with the good bacon and eggs.
You have chosen. . . .
. . .wisely.
Well that big ass asteroid was coming in 2012 so we had to make sure and be ready to catch it. But since it's really big everybody had to work together to do so. Then we just yeeted that thing up like a volleyball and it went away. And that's why we're still alive today.
WAUGHMP WAUGHMP
It was the last decade of magic before the Chaos Lord drained all of it from the land.
Also, every video used a fisheye lense, it was the law of the land.
We were powerless to stop him. :(

There was that cat recently who holds the record for a crazy amount of toes. :3
One might even say it was virtually insane of them to do this.
The future is made of Virtual Insanity, so this checks out.
MDMA and DXM
I love those bands.
So sad we lost DXM during covid. I know he was problematic but he was trying to reform and his music touched many lives
Hey, this guy knows how to party
WEWEWEWEWEW
I guess that’s the sound of huffing duster, I can’t remember the weird thing that always happened on dxm cos it’s been a while but yeah, I have abused the shit out of my body. Much, much less now though cos I can’t physically handle come downs anymore.
Things rapidly get larger then smaller, back and forth. For me, my vision would also sometimes do this thing where I'd have both eyes open, but it would look like I was winking one, then the other, back and forth really fast.
I also liked how even a little dxm would enhance weed like crazy.
It got to where I couldn't keep any liquid dxm down at all and I hated polystirex so robitussin in the blue bottle was the only thing that worked for me. Eventually I got tired of swallowing entire bottles of big, dry pills so I retired from it permanently.
You're not exactly right but you're not far off in my case. I have one of those photos
I witnessed this in the 90s and 2000s. AFAIK, it started in rave culture. People would lace their fingers around glow sticks and wave them in front of a friend's face. I was told that the effect is really cool if your rolling on MDMA. However, I also saw Mormon kids doing it stone sober, because they're always imitating things they see without understanding the drug component (e.g. a Mormon kid at a local high school who wore a pacifier on a necklace -- an MDMA raver accessory to give something to chew on -- despite zero awareness of drugs).
Personally, I think these photos are a combination of raver culture seeping into the mainstream, along with a trend of "reversing subject and photographer".
an MDMA raver accessory to give something to chew on
Remarkable how I finally learn after all these years what those baffling things were for. At least I hope that your explanation is correct.
This is amazing.
Team Foucault all the way. Chomsky folded like a cheap chair. /s

Everyone wasn't? But also, you ever heard of this thing called a "fad"? You best start believing in fads, you're in one.
Thanks Captain Barbossa
Also the age of the super tall cameraman.
rawr irl
You ain’t goin nowhere!

This is being done today. Ever notice how Youtubers/streamers are always waving their hands across the screen like they're doing ninja chops or something.

This seems like the most-likely explanation.
I was doing that in the 90s, too, because I was pretending to be a wizard and going "Pyaaaah! Zapppp!"
Creating wood glue "keys" from photos wasn't a thing back then.
At the time I was thinking that "they look fucking dumb," and it's still applicable. That's the answer.
It's one of music's greatest tragedies, that Limp Bizkit didn't have a better front man. The music is great but the lyrics and vocals are cringe worthy to the point of being unlistenable. And with a better front man they probably wouldn't have a name as stupid as Limp Bizkit.
That could be, I only heard a few of their hits. The thing I referred to just rubbed me the wrong way, and I and everyone else at school already hated fred durst because he's a pussy douchebag.
But at this concert the RATM member had climbed a light pole or something, all fucked up presumably. Durst saw him while being filmed and was like fuck this guy, kicing at the light pole and saying something to the effect of we should make him fall.
Fuck Fred Durst, Rage is better than any of their but-rock at limp biscuit. No offense if you like it.

We didn’t have selfie-cameras, so the only way to do a selfie was to throw your camera with a little spin on a short timer and hope it all looked great when one of your 24 photos were developed on bits of paper some time later…
