What's it going to take to truly stop the US?

8 months ago by ramble81 to c/nostupidquestions

So now we can add “directly capturing a sovereign leader” to the list of crap the US has done. So what do you think will actually be “the straw that broke the camels back” for world leaders to actually do something? Think it’ll be significant or something mundane?

mycodesucks 154 points 8 months ago

I hate to say it, but there's no fast answer to that question.

The best answer seems to be what most smart countries are doing right now... slowly unwinding their dependency on the US and finding alternative suppliers for everything critical they need so they can get the leverage they need to criticize and resist. This has the added benefit of isolating the US economically, reducing its currency's ability to influence things.

Over time the US will grow less and less able to throw its weight around, and eventually a tipping point will be reached where picking an ideological fight with the US won't have a major impact. That's when the US will be stopped.

Logically that makes sense for an elongated timeline, but that also assumes the US doesn’t ramp up their actions, which sadly seems to be the case. So the question is “what then?”

Nations can't ignore the fact that the US has one of the most active militaries in the world. Our Navy is more of less second to none and we have nukes. In the hands of a normal president, we might be fine but you sure as heck know that Trump and his Project 2025 people are just itching to launch one.

This is a situation where there are no good options. The best you can do is continue political pressure, get other nations to rally behind you in the hopes of creating a strong economic resistance.

But the real answer is that we, the US citizens, need to fucking take this country back. I hate to say it but protests simply aren't enough anymore.

Thank God the protest people are here. They were constantly on Reddit for the last four years saying how Russians need to protest against the dictatorship. Good thing Russians heard that and had the massive protest of Bolotnaya in 2011 and endless protests in the far-east and northern regions in particular. As we know, Russia is a thriving democracy now thanks to the protests. I was wondering when USians are gonna protest away their own tsar.

How is the US population to unite, self organize into militias and erect barricades with the current surveillance state and social media polarization?

Americans are staying at home doom scrolling and getting angry about their scarecrow neighbors they are made to dislike.

We know for sure that Americans are not ready to do anything more than voting and praying to answer any form of the social question. Haven’t been for a while. We’re on the slope of them not caring about the political question either. It’s all bread, circuses and surveillance algorithms.

A quarter of the American population would kill the rest because they think the regime is "hurting the right kind of people" and not anybody that they care about. This also includes the minorities who will soon learn that being "one of the good ones" just means that they go to the showers later rather than sooner.

It might have already happened...

Capturing a foreign leader you're not at war with like this is a huge fucking deal, but it hasn't even been 24 hrs yet, we can't act like there won't be a response.

Not anything overt, but our election system is sloppy as fuck.

Why wouldn't foreign governments start using all the loopholes to pay (relatively) nothing to limit his powers in midterms and get rid of him in the presidential? A couple million thru a PAC isn't even really breaking any laws, and compared to the cost of the chaos from trump, it's a no brainer decision.

It's why turnout for primaries is so important. We have to ensure that the people who make it to the general are going to be good in office.

Friendly nations do not meddle in each others elections. Russia did to USA because they are NOT a friendly nation, and to sow discord. Israel does it to USA also because they are not a friendly nation, they are focused 100% on their own agenda, and that includes ensuring USA supports it.
Trump/MAGA has already intervened in elections in for instance EU, and that's because USA is no longer a friendly nation to EU.
But I seriously doubt most of USA's traditional allies will meddle in USA's election, because it's just not something you do as a civilized country, because it violates that country's sovereignty.

A naive view. US has always promoted Atlanticist candidates, and has complete control over EU parliament appointees who are all pro NATO, and especially pro NATO subservience. NATO approved parties select a list of pro NATO candidates who will be appointed to EU parliament based on CIA/Atlanticist tolerance/support for that party. There are 4 leftist representatives from Greece in EU whose party is divided about NATO, and who were suppressed in last election because of it. I'm unsure if the representatives specifically vote against all NATO BS Russophobia. Among NATO member nations AfD leads a group that include Bulgaria's revival party (17 as a group). (Europe of Sovereign Nations). Both of these parties serve US interests of promoting divisiveness in EU. AfD has had direct boosting/interference for its behalf by Trump and Musk, and if they are ever able to have influence, NATO (performative rather than substantive) opposition will likely be rewarded by US, while simultaneously increasing US purchases. Orban's party has 10 seats, and like other right wing parties, rationality towards Russia is an electoral asset that permits other oppression.

There are 419 absolute NATO cronies in EU parliament, and the election process ensures that the most devoted to NATO subjugation are appointed, because the CIA rewards the party for input on their list.

You're right this will (or should anyway) invite a major international response. But it won't be attacking our elections.

It'll be in international politics and economics.
Were I in charge of another nation, I'd immediately end all diplomatic ties with us. Deporting all US embassy/consolate staff and diplomats. Possibly even visa holders. I'd also end whatever exports my nation made to the US. Buying the goods from my nation's companies myself. If my nations banks had any money of US nationals, it would be frozen.

But that's just me. We'll see what they decide to do.

We went into a foreign country, abducted their leader, and brought him back to America to be tried under our justice system for laws he was never subject to for crimes he almost had nothing to do with.

Importantly other countries aren't that mad about it either. I saw some posts about Trump making comments that seemed to suggest that mexico and canada could be targeted in the future for intervention related to drugs, so I went to canadian news sites to see what was up. The canadian government is basically like, "I'm not angry, I'm disappointed" and mostly because it goes against the norms of polite imperialism.

I won't link to her twitter account, but here is the statement:

The Hon. Anita Anand Minister of Foreign Affairs

Since 2019, when Canada closed its embassy in Venezuela, we have refused to recognize any legitimacy of the Maduro regime and opposed its repression of the Venezuelan people, including the persecution of dissenters and particularly political leaders opposed to the regime.

In keeping with our long-standing commitment to upholding the rule of law and democracy, Canada calls on all parties to respect international law and we stand by the people of Venezuela and their desire to live in a peaceful and democratic society.

Canada is engaging with its international partners and monitoring developments closely.

Canada stands ready to assist Canadians in need through our consular officials and embassy in Bogotá, Colombia.

I'm genuinely curious what would happen if the US lost nearly all of their foreign investors and all/nearly all of their major trading partners. (I understand that this is highly unlikely, but so was the thought that another world war would happen and happen in less than 50 years. I'm also tired of holding my breath on these things...)

The US as a country has vast natural resources, a lot of space, and a large educated population. There are two very long coasts, enabling trade by sea across the globe.

Investors fleeing and trade collapsing would lead to a major crisis and necessitate restructuring the economy. It’s important to remember that money leaving the country, doesn’t mean the physical assets like buildings, machines, trained workforce, and infrastructure leave as well. Production of goods for export would lead to too much supply of some things, with a lack of imported goods.

Lots of international trade could be replaced by domestic production. The US might actually be able to pull off an economy closed off to much of the world better than any other country. The reindustrialization and transformation of the economy would take a couple of years to a decade, with lots of hardship.

Still the US produces so much food and has an overproduction of pretty much all agricultural goods, that widespread hunger is unlikely. The agricultural sector already depends on subsidies snd regulation. So the bureaucracy and infrastructure is already in place to keep it going and steer it.

Culturally Americans are used to dynamic markets, adapting to change, and entrepreneurial spirit. That’s a further asset for being able to transform and economy.

Finally because of the easy access to the oceans and a powerful navy to protect their trade, the US can be very flexible regarding who they trade with. New tradingpartners will show up quickly.

Of course this discussion is a bit moot without talking about the world political stage this happens in.

tl;dr there would a shortage of goods, economic turmoil, no famine, stable energy production, likely a swift recovery

This reads like chatgpt. And is wildly unrealistically optimistic. And is wrong about American culture in a fundamental way and is ignoring bird flu, screw worm, and the upcoming dust bowl from mono culture industrial farming practices. Millions would die and it would take well over a decade just to ramp up manufacturing to make up for loss of imported goods. The country would ostensibly survive but it would look and act a lot more like Russia than it already does.

Sure, they built a shit load of infrastructure here as well. For example we had the most expensive highway built by Chinese prisoners, and paid for by Chinese loans. It not only started to show wear less then a year in, but there are sections that are literally expected to collapse.

We had the most expensive reconstruction done by Chinese workers, the ceiling collapsed and killed a bunch of people.

And so on, etc...

Now they're in talks to turn over every remaining national resource to them, to cover a part of the great work they've done so far, while Chinese companies are literally releasing unprocessed toxic waste into rivers.

I think I prefer one over the other.

I've noticed countries being pushed towards China after the US went even more crazy after Trump winning. I believe they are making a mistake. 4. Cancel your OpenAI/ChatGPT/Copilot subscriptions if you have those.
  5. Most importantly stop using Twitter if you use that and urge everyone else to do likewise. USAmericans have shown a complete inability to rise up against their government. This is not surprising given our crushing economic system, the fragility of our lives, and cultural landscape of the USA. At this point I believe Resistance has to come from outside the USA. This is unlikely due to the USA's extensive nuclear arsenal.

I foresee the USA going the way of China and Russia, steadily oppressing its people, enriching its oligarchs, and occasionally creating problems for the world. Greenland may very well be the USA's version of China constantly threatening to seize Taiwan.

My best guess is mass riots/civil war. The main reasons why it's not happening yet are because Trump still has a good number of supporters and because Americans are - rightfully - afraid of their police (or soldiers) killing them.

Trump is steadily losing his supporters every week, and the number of people at risk of dying due to lack of food or healthcare is increasing. If your life is at serious risk anyway, might as well get a shot at a revolution. And the more people willing to do it with you, the better the chances.

However, I'm not sure how realistic this scenario is. I'm concerned that a change of government for a slightly better one may be enough for most Americans to calm down. After all, they're very much used to being abused by their elites, whether they realize it or not.

Realistically, global trade drying up. Canada, Mexico, the EU, and others just refusing to do business with the US. Or possibly, making deals on a state-by-state basis, such as exchanging with California and New York, while ignoring Texas. By doing something like that, foreign nations can help prop up anti-conservative states, while bleeding conservatives lily white.

Mutual military agreements, such as retooling NATO to exclude the US and incorporating Canada, Mexico, and Taiwan might happen as well. The US has ceded their mutual exchange with Taiwan, other powers like India would like to have those chips. Maybe the EU outright allying with Ukraine, to remove Russia from play and to secure Ukraine's grain, oil, and expertise on warfare.

...In short, it would be a couple decades of work to stop the Turdpublican agenda through diplomatic pressure. Probably around a decade if WW3 or a 2nd American Civil War happens.

The US may think they are invulnerable, but they are far from it, the world can crash the US economy in a couple of hours.
Problem is it would hurt the rest of the world too, although not as bad as it would be for USA.
But there needs to be very strong arguments for doing it. Still there has already been hints of the "nuclear" option by EU against USA if USA continues to behave as poorly as they have this past year. The nuclear option being a 10 point EU plan to retaliate economically against USA. Needless to say that before Trumps 2nd term, such a plan didn't even exist! But with Trumps 2nd term EU has moved surprisingly quickly, as have many European countries individually.
Also China has its own nuclear option in just selling off US treasury bonds. That would make it very hard for USA to finance the federal deficits, and could collapse the American federal government.
But apart from that China could sanction USA on for instance rare earth minerals, that would make it impossible for USA to compete in several high tech products. The threat of this made Trump pull back on trade hostilities against China very quickly.

The US economy depends on the rest of the world to be the size it is. And without the economy to finance the military, USA will not be able to maintain a military the size they currently have.

I don't think this will work either. If Trump pulls the insurrection card, he'll just use drone strikes to obliterate any homegrown force. Sure, US citizens are armed up. But the arms that citizens have are meaningless when it comes to things like high altitude drones.

I think this is what people outside of the US forget when they call for 2A people to rise up. The US government has made the second amendment relatively meaningless in regards to it's original purpose. Kind of hard to fight back when you get vaporized by a dot in the sky.

I personally think hurting the upper class in the wallet is the only way anything in the US will change. Could be done through a general strike by US citizens (although at the time being I think this is unlikely to happen, given how little money people in the working class have. they have to be able to eat and be sheltered to weather the strike, after all), or by other countries sanctioning and messing with bonds.

Edit: if you originally meant homegrown as in US citizens. if not, carry on.

While I agree with your conclusion, I don't agree that military size has much to do with it. If you're speaking of personnel numbers, what you claim is far from accurate. You may be thinking of military expenditures, where you may possibly have a point. However, consider that the US military wastes tons of money on very expensive gear (much of the navy and air force, for instance) that wouldn't help much in modern warfare (drones, etc.).

Well, if you take good old-fashioned violence out of the picture, money. Or specifically a lack of it.

Sanctions, selling off US debt, more retaliatory tariffs, blacklisting US investors and companies, anything that pulls cash out of the US economy and puts it somewhere else. Turn off the money tap, make the mega-donors hurt bad enough and the dystopia machine will eventually grind to a halt. Don't think for a moment that the current squad of high-functioning sociopaths that are enabling this are principled enough to stay the course after a few of their mega-yachts are repossessed. They'll flip sides again and again just to try and keep that horde they've built up. Someone just has to prove to them that the threat is serious, because right now, they think everyone else is helpless against them.

Additionally, the majority of Trump voters cited the economy as a primary reason for voting for him. A good portion of them were probably lying to cover for being racist and just wanted to see POC and the LGBTQ+ community suffer, but if you crash the US economy hard enough, you can still hijack a big chunk of Trump's public support. It's the same as with mega-yachts, but here we're talking pickup trucks, ATVs, and rent-to-own furniture.

Few problems with this. 1. It's slow. 2. It'll hurt everyone else economically because US businesses have hooks set real deep in a lot of places. 3. Other nations have a wealthy elite with similar sway who want Trump in power for various reasons and might not play along. & 4. Whoever replaces the US might turn out to be just as big as bully in a few years if we're not careful.

Still, it needs to be done.

EDIT: It’s like the old saying goes, everything is about money, except money, which is about power.

The US has directly captured or supported the overthrow of multiple heads of state. Nobody has ever done anything and they won't now.

Too many Americans are actually supportive of this so there won't be any major domestic repercussions. Maybe some hearings in Congress.

America is not going to fix itself. The corruption is built in. For the last 50 years (roughly), the system has been changed to make the people dumb and complacent; to make the President a puppet king who answers to the wealthy.

Regimes like this only respond to incredible violence. They believe rules and laws and norms that don’t serve them don’t apply to them. All the systems designed to resist this bullshit are ignored completely because they just opt out of society’s rules while rewriting them on the fly to serve exclusively them.

This ends a couple of different ways. One is they encounter a bigger bully. They are all loyalists that cannot strategize, cooperate, and execute a plan. It’s yes men all the way down. So if someone powerful enough takes a swing, they don’t have the ability to respond. In this case, Canada invading the US with resources supplied by other nations concerned they are next makes the most sense. This administration wouldn’t be able to respond with anything other than tantrums online and on TV.

The other way this ends is letting them do whatever they want. They need an enemy to survive. Eventually they run out of enemies and have to invent new ones. We are already at that point. They divide the population up into good guys and bad guys and eliminate the bad guys, then they do it again, getting smaller and smaller each time until there’s no longer enough people left to sustain them. This is not the way we want as most of the US would have to die off for it to work but it is sort of the default mode of extinction for fascism.

The only method that works with fascists and results in the fewest casualties is incredible overwhelming violence. It’s been done before and worked because it was the best option, even if it’s still a terrible one.

But here’s where the propaganda machine protects the fascists. People are already ready for the incredible violence. The country is on a cliff edge right now. But we are so divided and dependent on TV and social media that we are told to attack eachother instead of the fascists. Most of us don’t want to do that.

So we wait for extinction.

It's a slow, ongoing process. The more the US tries to use force to make countries fall in line, the more people look to alternatives. Countries that used to be unaligned are looking at China and countries that used to be aligned with the US are looking at playing the field.

Invading or pissing off Japan, China or Canada. All of whom own a sizable amount of the US national debt. Any one of whom can dump said debt and cause a default on the US debt causing hyperinflation. With hyperinflation, they can't pay for their military and thus are dead in the water.

His attack on Venezuela is even approved by libs. And even if Trump himself was somehow unalived, the entire system that allowed his rise to power would still be there. The nazies trumpists and parasitic dominant classes would still be there.

Better just declare the American hegemony dead and disengage from any form of partnership with the USA. At least, Trump has the merit of exposing the USA for what they truly are : an alienating, morally bankrupt nation and fascist empire.

Most of these answers here are not viable because the US has leverage in almost every nation on earth.

Venezuela, Iran, Russia, China, etc are the exception, hence why they are sanctioned (and constantly suffering problems with every new CIA project) bar China which is locked in a trade war and has a sizable military to back themselves up.

You would realistically require a counter world power that offers an alternative to the US system, which used to be the USSR which no longer exists.

China is poised as the next superpower, but they haven't made any significant moves in that regard because they are wary of the USSR's downfall, and have no intention of engaging the USA in that manner (yet).

Everyone in the UN, despite all their cries, will fall in line when threatened, aside from the aforementioned exceptions.

I agree that a general strike could do the trick, but the challenge will be getting almost everyone onboard while still allowing the working class to eat and have shelter. By design, working class Americans have little means of weathering a long term general strike, and the upper class has enough wealth to ignore it unless it's a prolonged effort. A general strike for a few days will not cut it.

It might be "easier" for other countries to start dumping US debt. Not that it's their responsibility to "save" the US, of course. However, if enough debt was dumped, it would collapse the US economy. This is a nuclear option since it would also hurt the global economy, but would certainly hurt the US the most.

Yeah, a whole-country general strike in America would only last a day, two tops. They don't have the wherewithal to be good neighbours and politically aligned against monied interests the way a nation-state that has a deeper, older history can.

The history of America is money, interest, and interested money.

Southern plantations, 17th century land ownership, trade in enslaved persons, ranching, gold prospecting... and war.

War against the Indigenous, the French, the Spanish, the Mexica, the French again, the British, the Bolivarians, themselves, and then everyone else, forever.

The way to defeat America is to end its war-making capacity. Explosions, attacks, weathering, budget restrictions, out-competition, and mutually-assured destruction have all failed as gambits. What remains is to undercut the human element — wounding warriors without wielding deadly force. A loss in military preparedness, a disbelief in the stated mission, a war-weariness.

It's nowhere close to that level. The GOP/ MAGA has been eroding international trust in America for a while now, but realistically, everybody else is on the outside looking in, and even if America removed all women's rights, including the right to vote, or annexed Panama, all that would happen would be strongly worded protests and further political isolation of America from the rest of the world.

Nobody wants to fight a war against the USA, and barring something cataclysmic like an invasion of Mexico, nobody wants to sanction the largest market in the world.

TL;DR: America would have to become much poorer or much weaker before anybody does anything.

If the change in power were due to military power, the EU would have to switch to not relying on the US...which is what they're starting to do!

WW3, that's literally it. The rest of the world has done jack and shit about Russia and Ukraine beside sanctions and providing resources. People like to meme about Canada being badass, but they have such a small military presence that NATO has been upset with them for about 5 years for not doing their part. Outside of that there is no one in North or South America that can stand up to the US.

Africa isn't doing much militarily. No one close to China is going to drop their guard to go after the US (Australia included since they have China breathing down their necks as well). That leaves Europe and the Middle East. The Middle East probably isn't going to do much and if the US takes Venezuela's oil then they need the Middle East even less.

Europe will probably spin wheels and denounce actions, but the important members of Europe are either 1.) part of NATO 2.) not prepared to defend themselves from Russia if they leave NATO. They can't meaningfully sanction a military ally without breaking that alliance and once that alliance is officially broken NATO doesn't have the US backing against Russia and also faces even more risk of Greenland or Canada being attacked by the US.

Best bet for stopping the US is Brazil, Russia, or China saying they will intervene for Venezuela, the EU and other NATO nations saying they won't support the US, and then BRICS all jump in to fight the US. Maybe this weakens the US and BRICS effectively passes NATO but now Europe is sitting in the crosshairs for Russia.

Honestly, trying to go against the US is more likely to cause the Republican leaders to dislike European or international opinions even more. Republican's have been complaining at home for 20 years about freeloading foreigners who spend their military budgets on lefty progressive ideas, foreigners complaining about US domestic policies, and all the while the US polices the world for them. It's this sort of foreign attitude mixed with Russian and Chinese propaganda which has caused the US to drift further and further away from a positive relationship with Europe. Trying to go against the US is more likely to cause a Nazi & Stalin dividing up Poland situation rather than hurting the US.

The USA will undergo spiraling inflation until it collapses in on itself.

Our federal government is far more trouble than they are worth. We should be like individual states, but united. I declare it the... United States of America! Oh, wait.

But really, we will collapse and split into collections of states, some alone, some allied with others, I'm not sure if it's officially a balkanization, but close enough.

Our state governments will replace the fed automatically and easily (easily as in possible, not easily as in staving off empty shelves, fuel shortages, etc).

Our banking will stay basically the same, because they're not even the government, the Fed is a collection of bankers representing our various super banks. They will rug pull, buy everything at bargain prices, and restart the slow march of inflation richer than ever before.

Israel is a player, but not bigger than the banks, THEY are number one! Check out the history of, say, Deutsche bank. Older than most governments), and much wealthier than most of them, too. Israel does have their own very powerful "banking families" of course, it's an international interest, not national.

I don't think the banking families are concerned about, say, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They will sell to everyone involved, and make sure the winner is financed with many loans from the IMF or elsewhere.

Media? Yeah, US media is probably their biggest international ally after the US government, I think. Not an expert, new information always desired.

THERE IT IS AGAIN! "ANTISEPTIC"! It's a psychic trigger word implanted by the globalist pedophile vampires to short-circuit your brain before you can expose the truth about their dual-citizenship space bank on Mars! They're not just cleaning the information, they're sterilizing your soul with fluoride-laced chemtrails so you'll be too docile to notice the lizard people running the Federal Reserve and using your Social Security number to power their gay frog-transmuting weather machines! I think losing an aircraft carrier would give the US serious pause. Outside that, no idea. Maybe we finally pull the trigger and nuke someone, and that scares the rest of the world enough to start actively sanctioning us. Maybe not, though.

It does seem like most of Europe, Canada, and East Asia are happy to be in the pocket of US financial interests. Even folks who don't like Trump haven't bothered to break away from JP Morgan or Goldman Sachs.

Nobody wants to risk fucking with the money of the global hegemon. And so long as the US is the wealthiest nation on Earth, what's going to deter them?

It'll take the politicians in other countries being willing to say no to bribes from US corporations.

Because the actions that need to be taken involve sanctions on the US and seizing the assets (including patents and trademarks) of US-owned corporations. And refusing to act as a tax haven for them anymore.

But that would benefit everyone while lessening the ability of politicians to enrich themselves with money from oil stolen from Venezuela and money exploited from US citizens. Let's see how noble your politicians are. We know ours are shit.

Or maybe the AI bubble will pop and remove the incentive to kowtow to the interests of American corporations.

What's going to stop it? Short of a new world war, total economic collapse following government and corporate irresponsibility, man-made disasters, and greed in general -- once they get rid of the controls, the checks and balances, and emasculate the agencies like SEC and laws that are supposed to limit corporate irresponsibility and enforce civil rights.

However, Mainland China is highly likely to fill that global power vacuum once and if the US collapses on itself, and where I live I can still feel its heavy-handed influence in terms of voluminous imports of cheap goods, and it'll continue to loom larger over my people even long after I go out in this existence. That's why we have to be careful for what we wish for.

If we're talking war - Annexation of Greenland would probably do it.

Once you piss off enough people with allies then historically a lot of contractual responsibilities kick in... But the new playbook like what we've we've seen in Israel is "as long as nobody in government says the word 'genocide' we don't have to honor our previously signed responsibility to step in so even that's dodgy.

Once the US is seen as enough threat to the sovereignty of other nations who are just doing their own thing I think the response will kick in. Right now other countries are likely going to target the US's pocketbook by decreeing various economic and banking sanctions and ratchet up the internal pressures. The US correcting it's own listing ship through internal citizen lead processes is the good outcome and letting it basically fall into civil war is a more acceptable outcome than outside intervention from an international law perspective.

The US has a lot of Hard power : economic development and money, millitary might, strategic bases the world over, an uncomfortable amount of the world's nukes and a landmass that is legit difficult to wage a war on. The bar to actually interfering directly through boots on the ground intelligence related action is really high.

Nobody can outright militarily like, pull off assasinating the entire executive branch, which is basically what you'd need at this point, to actually stop this... bare minimum.

But what you can do is hasten our ongoing societal collapse untill we actually get to something like a Syria civil war scenario.

And how do you do that?

Well, you take advantage of our dogshit cybersecurity we have around lots of government systems and critical infrastrucure, which has surely been made much more secure with the recent drive to install highly exploitable LLMs everywhere they will fit... oh and I'm sure the experts at DOGE didn't leave any gaping exposed holes in anything...

And so anyway, you just turn off as much electricty and power and communications (yes that means the internet) as you possibly can, in a way that will keep them down for as long as possible and make it as difficult as possible to repair.

At that point, probably a good portion of the US collapses into complete fucking chaos within a week.

That chaos probably necessitates a reconfiguration of our global and domestic military deployments, and it fucks up our military logistics by way of basically destroying the economy.

Have that kind of a scenario play out?

Well, a whole lot of other major militaries are going to have a bit more of a free hand to do as they please, as we would be in utter disarray.

You don't even need to nuke us, not even high altitude EMP us, that's overkill, not necessary.

You just need to conduct the most extensive and most unauthorized cybersec pentest in the history of the planet, and we'll be dealing with bug reports for the rest of the century.

World leaders are doing things. Europe has committed large sums of money to building out their defense industries, China has been building out it's military capabilities for decades, Canada has used tarrifs to strategically punish the US for it's tarrifs on Canadian goods and joined the European defense partnership, presumably to gain access to the aforementioned defense industry build out in Europe. Japan is increasing it's military spending and moving to amend it's constitution to remove the restrictions on military force.

Sanctions against the US like those on Iran are possible, but for a country as large and wealthy as the US with such a diversified economy, even if the entire world sanctioned the US it would plunge them into desperate poverty.

It would wreck the US economy, no doubt, but most world leaders are not willing to even suggest their people should endure that level of hardship over Nicolas Maduro. And the US would still have most of the world ability to project military power, so driving us into a corner like that would be incredibly dangerous.

Make no mistake, every world leader and especially every head of state in Latin America is considering the chance that delta Force could pull them out of bed at 3 AM, I imagine Sheinbaum in Mexico, Lula in Brazil, have a few new grey hairs and especially Cubas head of state is sweating bullets. They don't have the power to prevent it.

I am personally reviewing my options for how to protest this action.

The U.S. military really needs a wakeup call about drones but I think when that happens, its gonna be real bad news for wherever it came from or the scapegoat for it. To be clear, even in light of this, I don't want to see people killed, on either side of this but the preparation that the U.S. military has for a drone war is woefully inadequate.

Look at the action taken against Iran, that's a biiiiiiig deal too. Short of a nuke, there isn't a much more exotic strike package than what was used against them.

The containerized strikes Ukraine has done from inside russia have been particularly scary. They basically setup manufacturing cells in country, built the drones, drove to the launch sites, and launched with no one noticing. The U.S. has minimal counters to those types of attacks assuming you don't catch them in advance. There have been reports for years about drones entering sensitive restricted airspace and just kind of flying around until the operators decide to leave.

When you start getting into ballistic missile defence and the larger one way drones, you realize that a proper coastal defence or even hvt defence on the homefront is woefully inadequate. I won't say we need to spend more on that stuff because to do it properly would be in the high trillions. I will say we should be able to develop and field that tech in reasonable numbers given our current military spending. Buuuuuuuut, the best way to avoid needing that is to not be a country that everyone hates...

Hot take, this was a way better outcome than carpet bombing Baghdad had. Objectively bad of course, but maybe the US military has actually learned something. I'd argue that Trump is a figurehead for the MIC, and it is telling that they have behaved with relative restraint (relative to Gaza and Ukraine for instance). If he was calling the shots for real how would this have gone down? It's been obvious since the Nobel prizes that there was a western consensus on regime change in Venezuela. It's directly related to Ukraine. This is a demonstration that the US military is far more capable than Russia's, and a message directly to Putin and simultaneously any sub-peer nation considering alignment with Russia or China.

Overlap of tech that avails all space to us, as tech that allows clean sustainable efficient use of earthly resources.

For other countries? Nothing. There's nothing they can do.

For citizens? Vote.

Unpopular opinion I guess:

Sovereign leader - who stole his election and was illegally running his country further into the ground.

I guess 8 million emigrants since the bolivarian revolution isn't enough to consider VZ a failed state?

I'm not saying what trump did was right, but Maduro was a cunt, chavez was a cunt, the bolivarian revolution has been a complete failure and has cost all countries in the Americas billions of dollars since it started. We just gonna sit back and let despots run countries on our side of the globe?

The issue is that invading another country isn’t allowed. And what’s next: the invasion of Denmark (Greenland) or Canada by the USA… it suddenly seems more probable… nah, won’t happen, you’ll say, different situation. I don’t believe you and I stopped trusting Trump before his first term.

The majority of Venezuelan refugees cite crime, inflation and lack of food/health security. Those problems are a direct result of US sanctions. The US implemented those sanctions to destabilize the government. It looks like it worked
