The internet says the US sells appoximately 200 million pounds of meat a day based on per capital numbers. This is a big number, but drop in the bucket.

That said, they put a false inspection number on it and the recall happened because they got caught. My guess is mis labeling and not being inspected is probably more common than we know.

Do you know why they found it? Because they LOOK for that.

It's an extremely unpopular opinion, and Trump has tried to make our safety nets worse, but the US has pretty good safety nets.

But just like anything else, good safety doesn't mean nothing ever happens. "Safe" drivers are still involved in accidents. Airplanes are safer than cars but do occasionally crash.

We should always want more safety, but food safety in the US is still pretty damned good.

Thing is, many of these things grow over time, and - especially with the active gutting of regulatory and oversight bodies - there's a decent chance that the list isn't comprehensive.

individual consumer packages may not bear this labeling, as retail stores may have applied their own stickers with pricing and safe handling instructions

The recalled meat could still have ended up in packages for consumers. What they're saying is that you can't know since retail stores would have cut up this meat and repackaged it.

No boil, but wash in (lightly) soapy water with lots of agitation for at least a minute and rinse well. Or use a product designed for that and rinse well.

Yeah, I'd be pissed too. The problem these days is that anything less than an actual cleaning agent isn't going to dislodge whatever industrial-strength nasty is on the leaves, so you can't just rinse and call it done anymore.

Not shaming you, I had to learn the hard way too. I wash all produce now, and have for years. When you know, you know, and now unfortunately you know too.

I’m probably going to do both going forward

I know boiling works cus I cooked the beans I made with the water from the contaminated pico the cilantro was in (didn’t know I had a problem at that point).

I’ve been eating the beans still, no problems, so the cooking must’ve helped neutralize it.

The tomatoes are pretty watery, even after pulling out over a cup of water. Plus the lime juice added a bit back.

Basically I just dumped it into a high-rimmed sauce pan, turned on the heat and waited til it was boiling. I gave it ~25 minutes on a light boil, and it smelled a bit less pungent but otherwise looked about the same.

Damn near everything in this shithole is contaminated as of the past year or two so there’s no winning safety-wise by shifting to plant-based, at least on that front.

I have noticed I tend to get sicker when I eat the (properly cooked!) little meat I can lately, though, which I suspect is due to skyrocketed antibiotic use in poultry farming the last decade or two. I also avoid deli meats for similar reasons.

Don't eat A&D meat.

This is not because of deregulation, this is because Star Meat Delivery attempted to avoid inspection by falsely labeling their meat as inspected.

The active regulatory body discovered it, and as it wasn't inspected, the rule is immediate Class I.

While im all for blaming the GOP on deregulation, deregulation did not enable this. Regulation issued the recall.

Call me sceptical but I doubt a fiction book published ~120 years ago predicted the recall of 167000 pounds of meat in 2026 and then went further to outline how it was directly related to the recent deregulation by the Trump administration.

Perhaps you’d like to be a little more verbose and expand on this comment?

If we had proper regulation, there would not have been 167000lbs of this shit to recall.

This is not 'oh, the regulation works or it doesn't', humans like to do that a lot for some reason, this whole 'it's either one thing or the other'. Nuance and gradients are a real thing. This would not have happened in a robust regulatory environment. The one we have operates on shoe strings.

Edit: 167000lbs at minimum. As another poster pointed out, this is just what was found. Which is like finding a roach in your house.

Holy red herring. The point isn't the percentage, the point is that fraud this size got past the system at all. They falsified labels - that's egregious, planned, and indicates a systemic issue with the company.

And sprinkling in a bit of cherry picking? You're dividing what 1 single inspection incident caught against the entire country's consumption of all meat for an entire year. This is apples and oranges, and entirely beside the point - you don't conflate detection with prevalence. Detection indicates a thing is happening, but doesn't indicate the entire scope. If you'd like to look at it in a real-world sort of way - this single inspection incident showed that enough beef to feed nearly 3000 people for an entire year had falsified labels. You can always make something seem small if you appeal to a relative scale to suit your argument.

This is bad advice, fellow Americans.

Look up where the recalls and violations have happened. Also, look up the cuts of meat.

Big numbers don't mean all of America. What a stupid suggestion.

I think the best advice is to do both: check what meat if affected and whether that might include the meat you're looking at. If you're not sure, maybe skip meat for a change. You can do without.

Maybe. We don't have enough information to know what's going on. We don't know for a fact that the labels are fake. We have a food safety department that was gutted and replaced by puppet management who have been suspiciously VERY active after receiving critisism that firing and dismantling food safety was a really big public problem.

It might have been actual bad meat

It might have been that the feds weren't going to get to it in time so they just pushed it out the door.

It might be that the labels used were deemed unofficial.

There's to many corrupt things happening right now to say for certain that it was a bad vendor for sure, but we'll never know because that's not how this plays out these days. There's no oversight on the watchers.

Any advice on how to make tofu flavourful? I've been trying to use it but anytime I do, it's more just kinda there rather than really adding anything to the flavour profile. Ironically, some of the "failures" where it all crumbled into something similar to scrambled eggs might have been one of the times where it did seem to pick up flavour, but while I wouldn't say the texture was bad that way, I'd like to get more out of it without it falling apart if possible.

Some chefs on shows like culinary class wars put great effort into making tofu for their dishes (one guy even won the whole show with a dish like that), so I feel like there's gotta be something I'm missing.

AnimalsDream 2 points 17 days ago

Lots of people on YouTube have tons of tips on ways to doctor up the taste and texture of tofu, but personally what I think it comes down to is just eating it regularly enough for it to become an acquired taste. It's not the best absorber of flavors, sauces and marinades will only penetrate about a millimeter or two. You can get deep flavor infusion with brines, but then you're eating a lot of sodium too.

People often recommend cutting it into smaller pieces so you're getting a better sauce to tofu ratio. As you said, crumbling it does increase surface area and help it hold more flavors.

So just keep trying things, and keep eating it, cause eventually you will start to actually enjoy it's own natural flavor (some brands taste better than others too). I'm at the point now where I keep it as simple as possible. Forget the unnecessary kitchen gear like presses. I take it right out of the package, maybe squeeze a little water out, and then I'll just smash the thing and crumble it right into whatever I'm cooking.

It's a gradual building process, but some perks happen very quickly. Like your whole body being in distinctly less pain - that can happen in days depending on your inflammation status. Or being super bloated because you started eating way too much fiber way too soon, that can happen in a day.

After a few years you may find your immune system starts to become superhuman. Not even joking, it's kind of wild how much more resilient I am to sickness these days. Getting sick far less frequently, symptoms consistently becoming laughably mild, and duration is far shorter too.

The average person in the US eats ~330g of meat per day. multiplied by 350 million people is ~11.5 billion grams, which is around 254 million pounds of meat per day. This recall is about 0.066% of the daily meat consumption in the US.

Great context! While the recall shouldn't be ignored, 167k is indeed a teeny tiny amount of beef that only that specific GA market should worry about.

By my cowboy calculations the domestic beef packers produce about 400 million pounds of beef per week. 140m of that is trim for ground beef and another 120m are beef cuts. Rest is organ meat and bones.

Your local Sysco chews through more beef than this in a day.

Fake inspection bug is no joke though. This isn't a case of a reputable supplier that started running before their tardy inspector arrived. This is an unscrupulous rogue actor that likely has 0 concern for product safety.

Well it is and it isn't. They have bought up all the packing plants creating a monopoly and an artificial constraint/bottle neck. I’m afraid that my career is in high demand. I’m on a highly qualified worker visa at least until i’m married or hit 5 years (5 years will be first at this rate). Found the role through relocate dot me, had my CV (not resume) all set, lots of “will relocate to EU” messages in there too and was willing to take a huge (75%) paycut. I also sold everything, paid off all my debts and basically moved with just a few suitcases and my dog.

My advice, it looks glamours but life is not always that way. If you can work it out, take 30-60 days in the country you think you want to live in first. Not vacation, live there. Go shopping (food, clothes, furniture), talk to neighbors, ride transit, get a local cell phone number.. everything reasonable. I thrived at this, my Ex did not. And yes, ex… we had other big problems but that was the issue that ended everything. In the end it just took time to land the role and I am happy I did - I want this for a very long time, just didn’t expect to be single

Paneer. It's easy to make at home, just use some whole milk and lime juice. Save the whey, use it in recipes that call for adding water

path: 0 25991437 25991971, hotness: undefined, score: 8, children: 2
Murse 6 points 18 days ago

For those unfamiliar, paneer is a cheese made from cow's milk, very common in Indian dishes. It doesn't melt, so you can use it largely the same way you would tofu, but where tufu has a kind of wet squishy texture, paneer is more firm and chewy. When paneer is heated, it kinda has the same texture as mozzarella when mozzarella is cold.

It's really good cut into slabs, marinated in pretty much any sauce under the sun - whatever you're in the mood for- and grilled/smoked. (edit - low temp! don't grill it like it's a steak or something, or it'll burn)

Red (split) lentils are pretty simple. Unlike other lentils, they don't need soaking for making them less farty and they cook fairly quickly. Can use them as pseudo-bolognese in tomato sauce, or just with rice and veggies, or cook them until they disintegrate (=dal) and then eat with bread etc..

Smoked tofu is also fairly simple (can just eat as-is with bread or in salad or whatever), but you may need to try a few brands to find one with a nice smoke flavour.

If you can find these in the vegan aisle, they're also worth trying: https://en.wikipedia.org/...
They're often sold as "soy chunks" or "soy strips".
You just cook them in vegetable broth and then you can fry them like meat. Or if you're really gangster, you fry them while they're dry and then put them into the sauce of your dish, so they soak that up.
I recommend these in particular, because they're chewy, which is something you might miss from other meat alternatives.

Yeah, I thought I need to mention that, since lots of folks avoid lentils, just because they bloat you when not prepared right. Which is really unfortunate, because lentils are an excellent protein. Healthy, tasty, shelf-stable for an eternity, and at least split lentils are dead simple to prepare as well.

TVP is shelf stable and a good ground meat substitute in dishes where the meat's there as a texture and carrier for spices and other flavors.

Pea protein is cheaper than whey protein. Its slightly less optimal in terms of amino acids but not by a huge amount and eating a diverse diet covers that anyway. 5lbs of naked pea protein is like $60 and it’s 76 servings that are each 120 calories and 27g protein per 30g powder. I add it to a lot of stuff like overnight oats and such

This is not for all of America. RTFA OP.

The FDA link in the article lists the product labels affected. I thinks it’s all labeled “A&D Foods” and has “EST. 1363” on the label. It all went to a distributor in Georgia.

Well it didn’t stop there, from FSIS

The raw pork, beef, and goat items were produced on various dates prior to September 22, 2026. The products were vacuum-sealed and packed into cardboard boxes for shipment; individual consumer packages may not bear this labeling, as retail stores may have applied their own stickers with pricing and safe handling instructions. The following products, distributed in bulk under the A&D Foods label, are subject to recall

The part that would be of concern to your average consumer is this bit

individual consumer packages may not bear this labeling, as retail stores may have applied their own stickers with pricing and safe handling instructions.

So if that Georgia Distributor, you know, distributes it to a grocery store and they repack it, you won’t be able to tell.

These items were shipped to A&D Foods, a distributor in Georgia, for further distribution to retail and restaurant locations nationwide.

The recall is about improperly labelled beef and pork that says it was USDA inspected. I don't think Canadians have a USDA.

Something tells me OP's motivation for lying about the types of meat and the countries involved is because they're one of those "militant" vegans.

Be also wary of meat you haven't bought recently (meat doesn't last long after the animal is killed). This doesn't apply to frozen or otherwise processed meat. This was supposed to be a funny joke, but I think I kinda am going too long for it to be funny

I just received a notice from our mayor , you can get free envelopes at the post office, that are addressed to Pennsylvania Avenue, wash DC. You can put the meat in there, you don’t need a stamp.

Conservative America, folks.

Maybe this will be enough to get people off their asses to do the thing most likely to remove conservatives from power? I'm sure they'll find one specific thing they don't like about the Dems and use that to justify being single issue voters/non-voters.

Send in the clowns.

Its funny, because Trump thought he opened some new amazing trade deal with Australia for beef export from US.

Nobody here is buying their shit beef (maybe 2 or 3 trump supporters here in Australia did), so, the good news is that we're not affected regardless

I've been suspecting that something was up. Idk I don't have any way to prove it and maybe the recall event hasn't been going on this long but for the past several months I've noticed that the date on meat is way farther in the future than it should be. Stuff I've gotta buy up and use today is marked "sell by next week".

Anyone else notice this? Maybe it's unrelated

I noticed on some ground chicken had a longer date than the turkey and they were packed near the same time. I just assumed maybe the chicken was shipped frozen so it allowed longer time.

Also had to toss a rack of ribs that still had 4 days and vacuum sealed and my refrigerator is colder than the recommended residential fridge.

This is a cruel thing to say but from an outside perspective, seems like the US government is forcing a diet on the population. Brutal but efficient to address that overweight problem.

Edit: for real? Isn't the /s obvious?

SnoopSqueak 2 points 18 days ago

It's a bit cruel, but mostly stupid. People getting sick and dying doesn't really help anyone lose weight.

What are we supposed to do? Eat more lettuce? Oops, diarrhea.

qyron 1 point 18 days ago

Of course it is cruel and stupid. An isolated event would be bad enough but the US government seems to be on a streak to inflict easily avoidable distress and suffering to the population. It's calous behaviour. Anywhere else, people would be housted and prosecuted for gross negligence and incompetence.
